2. Figures of speech
Figures of speech is a crucial part of writers effect as it allows the writer to have an impact on
the reader, for example,
“She was an 🦉 owl”, this is an metaphor (a figure of speech) this phrase states that she used to
be awake during night, one more evidence could be that the phrase directly states that she was
an owl. “Lightning 🦉⚡danced across the sky” An example of personification, in this phrase the
lightning is described as if it was dancing, it gave lightning an ability of a living thing. These
figures of speech are also helpful to enhance the writing and hook the reader from the very start
of the story to the very end. “The hiss of the snake 🐍” This is an example of onomatopea,
another figure of speech used for creating a strong impact on the reader. “Busy buzzing Bee
behaved beautifully” An example of alliteration, gives an impact on the reader rather than just
writing bee buzzed.
3. Denotation and Connotation
Denotation is the literal meaning or the dictionary meaning of the word, whereas connotation is the effect or feeling associated with the
word. In connotation there are two types of connotation, negative and positive. Identify which of these is denotation or connotation. In
connotation we also have to imply and this is called the implied meaning. The contextual meaning is the meaning associated with the
text. But when there is an direct meaning/it is directly stated it is called explicit meaning.
4. Imagery
5 senses
Smell, Sensitivity, Sight, Taste, 👂Hear
These can be used by the writer to have an impact on the reader and create an image in the readers mind. One important and useful thing to remember is
that Show don't tell, this means we have to make the reader imagine and create and imagery by only words. As u can see in this example it is shown how
tense was Michael, it gave an impact on the reader because it gave an imagery to the reader by one of the senses, sight. This could also be written as
Michael was afraid of dark but that's what all the writers effect is about, it showed, described and gave every single description/experience possible.
