2. Worship
– Can we worship God wrongly?
– Matthew 15:8-9

3. Worship
– Worship comes from the Saxon word weorthscype,
which later became worthship
– To worship God is to ascribe the proper worth to Him
– “Worship is our response to the overtures of love
from the heart of the Father.”
– Those who know Him best worship Him the most
– Worship is first and foremost about God, not about
us!

4. Worship
– “Anything you do that brings pleasure to God is
an act of worship.” – Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life
– “A dairymaid can milk cows to the glory of God.” –
Martin Luther

5. Worship
– Worship should begin with holy expectancy and end in
holy obedience
– If worship does not propel us into greater obedience, it
has not been worship.

6. Biblical Passages on Worship
– Psalm 115:1
– Matthew 4:10
– Romans 12:1
– Psalm 100
– Psalm 150

7. What Worship is Not
– Singing songs, listening to music, going to church,
feeding the poor, etc. are not worship.
– They can be used to worship God, but ultimately worship
begins in the heart, not in the actions or activities we do.

8. Worship
– Focusing on God should increase appreciation to Him
– Understand, focus, appreciate, worship
– If your mind is not set on God that is not worship

9. Worship is Done in Spirit and in
Truth
– John 4:23-24
– Before worshipping in Spirit and truth we must
first possess the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17)
– 1 Corinthians 12:3

10. Worshipping in Spirit
– From the inside out
– Being sincere
– Closeness to God

11. Worshipping in Spirit
– “Worship is a way of gladly reflecting back to God the
radiance of His worth. This cannot be done by mere
acts of duty. It can be done only when spontaneous
affections arise in the heart.”
– “It’s my duty” vs. “It’s my joy”

12. Worshipping in Truth
– If we are not worshipping in truth then there is only
one alternative, worshipping in error!
– We find this truth in the Bible by the guidance of the
Holy Spirit
– Romans 12:1
– Revelation 4-5 gives a great example of worship in
heaven.

13. Worshipping in Truth
– Worship God for who He is (His Character)
– Not for what we want Him to be
– Not for what we think He is
– Revelation 4:8
– Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God… = Holy. (above us, perfect)
– …Almighty = Sovereign. God is in control
– …who was and is and is to come! = Eternal
– 4:11 = Creator
– Worship God for what He has done
– Revelation 5:9 = died for the sins of the world

14. Worship in Public and Private
– Believers are described with metaphors such as: body (1
Cor. 12:12), building (Eph. 2:21), and household (Eph. 2:19)
– Individual units and a larger whole
– Hebrews 10:25 – corporate worship is essential
– If you neglect public or private worship you are stunting
your spiritual growth… and can hurt the growth of the
body

– Much like prayer, worship is something we can, and should
do throughout the day
– If worship becomes empty the problem lies with us, not with
God
– Worship, like all spiritual disciplines, is a way for us to grow in
a closer fellowship with Jesus Christ

16. Genuine Worship
Involves Purity
– Sin needs to be dealt with before a person can properly
worship God.
–
– A worshipper needs to be pure (like the elders clothed in
white – a symbol of purity in Rev. 4-5)

17. Genuine Worship
Involves Humility
– Nobody full of pride in self will be able to freely give God all
the glory in their life, at the least they will try to share in
God’s glory
– Isaiah 48:11 B
– Revelation 4:10, 5:8, 5:14

18. Genuine Worship
Involves Surrender
– Revelation 4:10 – They cast their crowns before the throne
– Their crowns were a representation of their faithfulness.
– Worship is not about keeping what we have, but about giving
it all to Jesus Christ

19. Genuine Worship
Involves Praise
– Praise is a lifestyle, not just an event
– Worship involves the way we live our lives
– Worship should be who we are before God, both publicly and
privately, both internally and externally, both spiritually and
physically.
