  • #5 “One of the reasons that the psalms are so beloved is that they express the full range of human emotions before God. The hymns of praise shout out the soaring joy of those who bear witness to God’s faithfulness. The prayers for help give voice to the groaning pain of those who long for—but cannot find—a faithful God in their suffering. The poems of trust express the confident inner faith of those who trust, in spite of the quaking external realities all around. The songs of thanksgiving ring with the renewed song of those who have passed through a dark valley of crisis. The instructional psalms pass on the wisdom of those who have gone before to generations yet unborn. The imprecatory psalms cry out for justice against those who oppress. And the royal psalms bear witness to the mystery that God has chosen human beings as the agents through which God is at work in a broken world. “
  • #9 Asaph - A Levite; one of the leaders of David’s choir (1 Chr. 6:39). Psalms 50 and 73–83 inclusive are attributed to him. He is mentioned along with David as skilled in music, and a “seer” (2 Chr. 29:30). The “sons of Asaph,” mentioned in 1 Chr. 25:1, 2 Chr. 20:14, and Ezra 2:41, were his descendants, or more probably a class of poets or singers who recognized him as their master. Sons of Korah - They were an important branch of the singers of the Kohathite division (2 Chr. 20:19). There are eleven psalms (42–49; 84; 85; 87; 88) dedicated to the sons of Korah. Ethan - two men listed in OT; leader of temple music; probably the same as Jeduthun Heman - A grandson of Samuel and son of Joel whom David put in charge of the service of song (1 Chron. 6:31–33). He is identified as the “singer” and, as the first in the list of three appointed by David, he may have been the chief musician. Ps. 88 is probably attributed to him.
