Introduction
World War II began on September 1, 1939, when
Germany invaded Poland.
It was one of the largest and most significant events that
shaped many governments, societies and cultures around
the world. Popular cultures such as
fashion, music, literature and even values, opinions and
thoughts have changed considerably.
4. Popular culture prior to the war was very distinct to what popular is like at the present
time. In particular, there were thoughts and notions that are very contrastive to what is
thought today. Consider the fact the only men worked and woman stayed at home and
took care of the children. Also, forms of entertainment were quite different. People
listened to the radio, went to the movie theatres to see newsreels and films at the
cinema, read, played the piano and went to dances. Visiting families and friends was
also favoured. Before and during World War II, people did not have televisions, video
games, computers or cell phones. Life was very different before the war but in spite of
that, it implemented many changes in popular culture that are still regarded today.

Fashion
As World War II was coming to an end, clothing styles were being
redefined. During WWII, fashion industries had been limited due to rations
on fabric. For instance, there was a inadequate supply of wool and
instead, artificial fibres were used. Dresses and skirts were made shorter
and the 2 piece bikini was introduced. The colours of clothing during this
time were plain and solemn and many outfits were of solid colours such as
ivory, black or khaki.
Men wore suits only for special occasions and sometimes even wore V-
necked sweaters or knitted waist coats. The military outfits during the war
were made very simple. Subsequent to the war, women wore head scarves
for safety. The shoes they wore contained cork - this was largely as a result
of the shortage of leather. A change in fashion has certainly occurred
because of the war and the styles of this time illustrate the darkness of this
particular time in history.

Music & Art
Music and art have also been inspired by the war. Female vocalists were common and
popular and songs became very sentimental. World War II also had an enormous
impact on Jazz music.
Jazz music provided an uplifting mood for the people at home during the war as well as
the soldiers fighting. Surprisingly, Jazz music had an important role in the World War.
Many Hollywood and musical celebrities were brought together to perform for the
troops to lift their spirits during such a harsh time. Jazz musicians also worked on many
patriotic films.
Also, art was beginning to be devoted to combat scenes. The years of war were framed
on canvases and preserved in museums such as Imperial War Museum

11. Movies& TV
Movies and TV were equally popular during and after the
war. World War for many films and television programmes.
The film aspect had reached its peak by the 1960s, with
films such as The Longest Day (which had been adapted
from a book), The Great Escape and Battle of Britain.
“Many films conveyed heroism, patriotism and humanity.
Movies about World War II continued for the rest of the
20th century and into the 21st century, though less in
number and included The Thin Red Line, Saving Private
Ryan, Flags of Our Fathers and Red Tails.” (Wikipedia)

12. Literature and written material has also been impacted on by the war. Writers expressed
great patriotism through their works. They also showed themes such as
race, power, democracy, and human behaviour. Hundreds of war novels eventually appeared
and many poets did impressive work and these often conveyed a clear message. For
example, High Flight was a very famous poem and novels such as Battle Cry drew heavily to
the experiences in war. Many sayings, quotes and even idioms were also influenced by the
war. Bite the bullet, great guns, drop a bombshell and many more idioms were introduced in
the time of the war. Famous quotes were also based on war: we shall defend our island
whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets
and on the hills. We shall never surrender ( ~ Winston Churchill).

13. High Flight
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth.
Of sun-split clouds--and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of-
Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

14. The Role of Women
Prior to the war, women did not play as large a part in society as
they do now, but were slowly gaining more rights, beginning
many years ago with the right to vote, and slowly progressing
from that great step. Women took on many of the roles that had
traditionally belonged to men. They took on jobs in the in the war
effort, including those such as military nurses, working near
battles around the world to save wounded men, as factory
workers, and as journalists, reporting the happenings of the
battle front to news agencies in their home countries. The war
influenced women and their lifestyles significantly and it showed
them that women were capable of doing everything a man could

Policies and Ideas
Moreover, prior to World War II, many countries had policies and
ideas such as of America: they felt that other nations’ problems
were their own business and they avoided getting involved unless
they felt a directly threatened. As a result of the war, those
countries decided that threats to peace and freedom did affect
everyone. Thus, after the war, they became internationally
minded using power and prestige to prevent wars wherever
possible or to minimize their effects when they did break out.
16. New advances in technology have also been affected by the
World War. Subsequent to the war, people have produced
things such as Atom Bombs and new and improved sea and air
warfare materials. However, technological advances in WW2
changed the battlefield completely as more deadly and auxiliary
equipments were introduced.

17. Furthermore, technology such as the radio had also
been affected. The radio was a fundamental form of
entertainment and was a way in which
communication was made simpler. Although the
radio was an essential device, the size of it made it
less mobile and harder to handle. Due to this, radios
were made a lot smaller and even the walkie talkies
were being used. People have improved many
technological devices and continue to do so as each
improvement makes an object easier to use.

Sporting Activities
In addition to this, sporting activities were also
affected by the war. The armed services provided
equipment and training so the soldiers acquired a
fair amount of exercise. World War II also allowed
women to participate in the male dominated sports
such as basketball and softball.
20. World War II is a crucial event in history that has affected
popular culture. Many works were created during the
years of conflict and many more have arisen based on
that phase of struggle and war. Popular culture is
continuously changing and usually, it is influenced by
momentous global issues.
