During the past three years, Texas has been on of the top five states in the
nation receiving refugees from abroad. Statistics has shown that:
1. In 2011, over 5500 refugees moved into Texas
2. In 2012, over 700 refugees moved to Dallas
3. In 2000, 4% of the US refugee population moved to Texas
4. In 2012, that percentage increased to 10%

4. Immigrant vs. Refugee
Refugee:
Under United States law, a refugee is
someone who (USCIS):
• Is living outside the US
• Is of special humanitarian concern
to the US
• Shows that they were persecuted or
fear persecution due to race,
religion, nationality, political opinion,
or membership in a particular social
group
• Is currently not settled in any other
country
• Can be moved to the United States
Immigrant:
The Immigration and Naturalization
Act , an Immigrant is someone who:
• Any alien who has entered the US,
except those under a non-
immigrant visa category.
• So, it includes anyone who has a
willingness to permanently settle in
the US, and is not in the US on
temporary/non-immigrant visa
(visitors visa, student visa, work
visa)
• Thus, an illegal immigrant is also
considered to be an immigrant
under this definition.

Common issues refugees faced:
1. Assimilation with the US culture
2. Lack of English proficiency
3. Economic self sufficiency
Aid can be brought in the form of:

3. Information on US laws and culture
4. Improve on employee skills
