Africa will experience the largest population growth of any world region through 2050, with its population more than doubling from 1.1 billion today to at least 2.4 billion. Nearly all of this growth will occur in sub-Saharan Africa, currently the world's poorest region. Rapid population growth makes it difficult for economies to create enough jobs and lift people out of poverty. Future population growth in Africa will depend on how widespread the use of family planning becomes. If family planning is not widely adopted, Africa's population will grow even more quickly, exacerbating challenges around poverty, employment, and the environment.
