WORLD HEARING DAY
3RD MARCH 2022
By
Dr Nisha kaur
• World Hearing Day is observed on March 3 every year.
• The campaign is held every year by the Office of Prevention of
Blindness and Deafness of the World Health Organization (WHO).
• The day aims to share information and promote actions towards the
prevention of hearing loss and improved hearing care.
• On this day, various activities take place around the globe, and WHO
hosts events for the promotion of the cause.
• The theme for World Hearing
Day 2022 is
• “To hear for life, listen with
care”
• which will focus on the
importance and means of
preventing hearing loss from
recreational sounds through safe
listening.
•
• This World Hearing Day will mark
the launch of a global standard for
safe listening entertainment
venues and events, detailing safe
listening features.
• The features can be implemented
by governments, venue and event
owners, and event staff such as
audio engineers,
• SafeListening handbook, on how
to create a mHealth safe listening
program, and a media toolkit for
journalists containing key
information and how to talk about
safe listening.

1. Aging. Degeneration of inner ear structures occurs over time.
2. Loud noise. can damage the cells of your inner ear. Damage can occur with long-term exposure to
loud noises, or from a short blast of noise, such as from a gunshot.
3. Heredity. Your genetic makeup may make you more susceptible to ear damage
4. Occupational noises. Jobs where loud noise is a regular part of the working environment, such as
farming, construction or factory work, can lead to damage inside your ear.
5. Recreational noises. Exposure to explosive noises, such as from firearms and jet engines, can
cause immediate, permanent hearing loss. Other recreational activities with dangerously high noise
levels include snowmobiling, motorcycling, carpentry or listening to loud music.
6. Some medications gentamicin, sildenafil (Viagra) and certain chemotherapy drugs, can damage
the inner ear.
7. Some illnesses. high fever, such as meningitis, may damage the cochlea.
PERSONAL LISTENING DEVICES
• Rapid technological advances have revolutionized personal listening
devices, leading to an electronics market dominated by Walkman,
iPod and other brands of MP3 players
• 91% of all people on earth have a mobile phone.
• India is the second largest mobile phone user in the world.
• 70.08% of total population of India uses mobile phones
• Nowadays even mobile phones come equipped with earphones and
cater a variety of functions like playing music, videos, movies and also
games.
• • Most of the MP3 players today can produce sounds up to 120
decibel
• At that level, hearing loss can occur after only about an hour and 15
minutes
The use of earbuds (earphones) placed directly into the ear can amplify the
sound signals by as much as six to nine dB•
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reported 10.7% of population
suffering from hearing impairment is due to earphone use
• individuals who listen to music through PLDs may be putting
themselves at risk for permanent noise induced hearing loss if
exposed for extended periods of time (years).
• These results are alarming as more and more children are using PLDs
• Hearing loss induced by personal listening devices (PLDs)
• may evolve into a significant social and public health problem
• in future years.
• Prolonged exposure to loud music leads to a
significant/subclinical damage to hair cells of the cochlea
OTHER EFFECTS OF PLDS
• Ear infections due to use of earphones
sharing earphones with others is definitely not safe as the bacteria from
other s ears travel to your ears and cause infections.
• Blockage of air passage
• Side effects on brain
• Earphones and headphones produce electromagnetic waves, proven to be
dangerous for the human brain. However, there are no studies or
evidences that can prove this point. But those who use earphones,
Bluetooth and headphones on a daily basis are prone to problems related
to brain.
• Severe pain in the ears
• Those who use earphones and headphones regularly tend to visit the
doctor with a complaint of severe ear pain.
• You will feel some strange and different sounds buzzing in your ears.
You also feel numbness in your ears. There are studies which have
proved that excess use of earphones result in numbness and pain in
the ears.
Precautions to be taken while using earphones
• Stop using stylish tiny earphones as they enter your ear canal directly. Use
bigger headphones.
• You should always have your personal earphones. Do not share them, not
even with family members.
• If your earphones have a rubber or sponge cover, then try changing them
at least once in a month.
• Do not play music with loud sound. Try to keep it as low as possible.
• Avoid earphones when you are travelling as you will increase the volume
due to the disturbing sounds around you and that proves harmful.
• Try to give rest to your ears once every 15 minutes.
