About WHO
About WHO
 Founded in 1948, WHO is the United Nations agency that
connects nations, partners and people to promote health,
keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable – so everyone,
everywhere can attain the highest level of health.
 WHO leads global efforts to expand universal health
coverage. We direct and coordinate the world’s response to
health emergencies. And we promote healthier lives – from
pregnancy care through old age. Our Triple Billion targets
outline an ambitious plan for the world to achieve good
health for all using science-based policies and
programmes.
WHO organizational structure
 From our longstanding Geneva headquarters to our 6
regional offices, 150 country offices and other offices
around the world, WHO plays an essential role
improving local health systems and coordinating the
global response to health threats. Discover how we
work to support the efforts of governments and
partners to ensure everyone, everywhere has an equal
chance at a safe and healthy life.
How WHO is funded
 WHO gets its funding from two main sources: Member States
paying their assessed contributions (countries’ membership
dues), and voluntary contributions from Member States and
other partners.
 Assessed contributions (AC) are a percentage of a country’s
gross domestic product (the percentage is agreed by the United
Nations General Assembly). Member States approve them every
two years at the World Health Assembly. They cover less than
20% of the total budget.
 The remainder of WHO’s financing is in the form of voluntary
contributions (VC), largely from Member States as well as from
other United Nations organizations, intergovernmental
organizations, philanthropic foundations, the private sector, and
other sources. https://www.who.int/about/funding

 Americas
 Eastern Mediterranean
 Europe
 South-East Asia
 Western Pacific
WHO Partnership and Collabration
 Working together for the good of all people, everywhere
 Collaboration is at the heart of all we do. Every day we connect nations,
partners and experts so that we can go further, together. Our partners help
support WHO’s scientific work and field programmes, contribute funding and
resources, engage in our campaigns and programmes and join us in advocacy to
bring policy and behaviour change for better health.
 Partnerships help us to deliver life-saving vaccines and supplies, raise funds for
the Triple Billion Targets, establish consensus among leading scientists and
much more. From world leaders to international organizations, civil society,
foundations, researchers and health workers, we mobilize every part of society
to achieve health and safety for all.

 Governments and leaders
 Experts
WHO Countries
 All countries which are Members of the United Nations
may become members of WHO by accepting its
Constitution. Other countries may be admitted as
members when their application has been approved by a
simple majority vote of the World Health Assembly.
Territories which are not responsible for the conduct of
their international relations may be admitted as Associate
Members upon application made on their behalf by the
Member or other authority responsible for their
international relations. Members of WHO are grouped
according to regional distribution (194 Member States)
 Check countries list here - https://www.who.int/countries
Advisory Groups
 WHO brings together individual experts to provide scientific, technical
and/or strategic advice through strategy advisory groups on specific
health issues. These experts act in a personal capacity and do not
represent any external entity, authority or government.
 The WHO Open Calls for Advisory Groups aim to identify suitable
members for these groups. They are published on WHO’s public
website, inviting suitably qualified candidates who meet the
established eligibility criteria to express their interest through the
online form. Applicants will also be required to complete and sign
the standard WHO declaration of interests (DOI) form for experts.
 For more info click here -

groups
Expert advisory panels and
committees
 Below is a non-exhaustive list of different
collaborations that WHO plays a part in. The
networks, committees, advisory groups and taskforces
listed below are of varying scale, each with a different
structure and relationship to WHO. Separately, see a
list of WHO expert advisory panels and committees.

WHO Governance
 Governance takes place through the World Health
Assembly, which is the supreme decision-making
body; and the Executive Board, which gives effect to
the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly. The
Organization is headed by the Director-General, who
is appointed by the Health Assembly on the
nomination of the Executive Board.
https://www.who.int/about/governance
WHO Accountability
 Accountability is vital for the success of any
organization, especially one that asks the nations of
the world to entrust it with their funds, pledging to use
them to improve health globally.
 It’s even more vital in a world marked both by
increasing competition for limited development
resources, and by greater scrutiny of results obtained.
Countries and other donors rightly want to know what
their contributions are achieving.
