Empowering energy at the World Energy Leaders’ Summit
With less than a month to go the countdown is on until the Mexican
Government and World Energy Council host the World Energy Leaders'
Summit in Mexico City. The summit will form the highlight of a week of
energy events entitled Dialogues for the Future of Energy Mexico 2017
(DEMEX) organised by Mexico’s Ministry of Energy (SENER) on 12 and 13
September. Hosted by the Secretary of Energy, Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, the
summit will bring together approximately 100 Ministers and CEOs from
across the world to drive change and deepen understanding of the grand
energy transition at a critical time for the sector, including Yong Li, Director
General, UNIDO, and Aziz Rabbah, Minister of Energy, Mines and
Sustainable Development, Kingdom of Morocco. Read more

Still time to register for Lisbon Executive Assembly!
As the Council’s Executive Assembly in Lisbon draws nearer it is not too late to
register! The much anticipated 2017 World Energy Council Executive Assembly is
taking place in Lisbon from the 16-19 October 2017, hosted by the Council’s
Portuguese member committee and co-hosted by the Government of Portugal. In
addition to meetings taking place during the week, more than 80 Ministers and
CEOs from the public and private sector will participate in a number of high-level
discussions. The Council will be holding a Trilemma Summit as well as a Future
Energy Leaders’ Summit. Read more

New Zealand is a leader in the integration of renewables in the electricity sector
with around 80% and around 40% as a share of total energy. The BusinessNZ
Energy Council (BEC) hosted an exclusive member-only roundtable in
Wellington, to explore implications of the Council’s World Energy Scenarios to
2060 report for the country. Discussions focused on the question of potential
next steps in New Zealand’s energy transition. New Zealand has a unique
emissions profile. Agriculture, being approximately 50% of New Zealand’s GHG
emissions, and transport, around 20%, are top of the agenda for New Zealand’s

India examines US strategies for integrating wind and solar
India plans to deploy unprecedented levels of renewable energy (RE) on its
power grid – 175 GW installed capacity of renewable energy by 2022, up from
43 GW currently. Furthermore, India’s Nationally Determined Contributions
extends this ambition to 40% non-fossil fuels-based electricity generation
capacity by 2030. USAID/India is assisting the government of India in
integrating large scale, variable renewable energy (VRE) into the existing power
grid through a five-year Greening the Grid (GTG) initiative. As part of this
Initiative, USEA organised a study tour comprised of regulators, policymakers
and system operators. Read more
