Man developed farming techniques and domesticated animals, allowing villages to form as people no longer had to constantly migrate to survive. Villages grew into cities as families increased in size, and nearby cities joined together to form the first civilizations. To be considered a civilization, a society must exhibit seven characteristics including cities, complex institutions, record keeping, advanced technology, specialized workers, religion, and social classes. The Bronze Age brought better farming and hunting tools as well as stronger building materials to support growing cities and promote cultural expression, moving societies closer to the use of iron. The development of written language facilitated record keeping, cultural works, and mass communication across larger populations.
