Parks Canada entered into a partnership with the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) in the
development of a campaign in 2011 for UNESCO's International Year of Biodiversity. The focus of the CAZA
campaign was biodiversity at risk in the Arctic. Key to the campaign was the development of an educational toolkit
and a website presence, www.OurArctic.ca. Campaign literature was provided to all CAZA members, reaching
audiences across Canada. This presentation will outline the planning, development and the implementation of the
campaign. It will describe CAZA's lead role and the participation of partners including Parks Canada, Canadian
Wildlife Federation, and Polar Bears International. Participants in this session will learn the value of engaging
partners to extend the potential and reach of an educational initiative; they will learn about the Parks Canada
approach in building stakeholder and partner relations; and they will be given an opportunity to apply lessons learned
by the partners in the OurArctic campaign to relationship building their organizations and agencies are undertaking.
This presentation also will describe the campaign and its goal to build awareness of Canada's Arctic and its
biodiversity and its efforts to get Canadians to work together to save Arctic species. And the session will describe
how this campaign has helped develop stronger working relationships among all participating partners. Our Arctic.

Inuit Values and Worldview: Their Importance in Protecting the Arcticgarryenns
Inuit culture, values, and beliefs informed the negotiations that established the territory of Nunavut in 1999. The
Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and the Inuit Impact Benefit Agreements (IIBA) ensured the rights and values of
the Inuit would be the foundation for the decisions and actions of all governments, associations, and businesses in
the Territory of Nunavut. This workshop will explore the Inuit values and beliefs that resulted in the protection of the
environment through the creation of a network of protected areas in Nunavut. The workshop also will look at the
significance of traditional knowledge; the strength of Inuit culture and values; and how this knowledge and these
values have helped Parks Canada—and the Government of Nunavut—establish significant protected areas as
reflected by the size and number of Parks in the Territory. This workshop will include an examination of the National
Park Co-Management system, which was established by the IIBA's that governs all of the Nunavut FIeld Unit's
planning and decision-making processes in the management of four amazing national parks in Canada's Arctic. The
session also will familiarize participants with the system of Inuit Beliefs and Values—often referred to as "IQ"—and
how the Nunavut curriculum is based on these values and beliefs. Parks Canada presenter(s) also will share the
challenges and the opportunities they face in building a parks and heritage sites network in a remote territory with a
culture in transition, e.g. trying to work in THREE official languages.

The Torngat Secretariat is the implementation agent of the Torngat Joint Fisheries Board and the Torngat Wildlife and Plants Co-Management Board. The Boards provide recommendations and decisions regarding wildlife, plants and fisheries within and adjacent to the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area.
The presentation will provide background information on the role and responsibilities of the organization, and traditional knowledge research that has influenced decision-making using the case studies of Atlantic Salmon, Arctic Char, Torngat Mountains Caribou and Davis Strait Polar Bears.
The presentation also covered the transdisciplinary information that is considered in the practice of co-management. In summary:
- Knowledge can be co-produced.
- Accept all available knowledge to facilitate the best possible dialogue and decisions.
- Policy analysis should be neutral and competent and include all the key considerations.
- Traditional knowledge is influential and contributes to better decisions.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
