- The upper reach of the Navua River is located between Nabukelevu and Namuamua villages and winds 13 kilometers through the South Pacific’s most spectacular canyon.
- The tourism product in Fiji offers all of the attributes associated with tropical island destinations, the 4 S’s--sun, sea, sand and surf. In addition, Fiji has thrived on an international reputation for friendly service and hospitable locals, with emphasis placed on the Fijian “smile.” As a result, the tourism industry in Fiji has grown substantially over the past 50 years. In 1999, tourism continued its upward swing, with nearly 410,000 overseas visitors contributing over $600 million in foreign exchange earnings (Fiji Visitors Bureau, 2000). And, tourism, recognized as the most important industry in Fiji, is responsible, directly and indirectly, for an estimated employment of 45,000 people In 2005, 550,000 tourists visited Fiji, with earnings estimated at F$213.8 million (p. 31). The Fiji Visitors Bureau predicts continued growth at an estimate of 7-9% in years ahead.
- As a development tool, ecotourism can advance three basic goals of the convention on biological diversity… Conserve biological and cultural diversity by strengthening protected area management systems (public or private) and increasing the value of sound ecosystems; Promote the sustainable use of biodiversity, by generating income, jobs, and business opportunities in ecotourism and related business networks, and, Share the benefits of ecotourism developments equitably with local communities and indigenous people by obtaining their informed consent and full participation in planning and managing of ecotourism businesses…
- The Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. There are presently 153 Contracting Parties to the Convention, with 1626 wetland sites, totaling 145.6 million hectares, designated for inclusion in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
