The notes from teaching week two and teaching week
three provide an essential foundation to this week’s notes. Discussion this week concludes my presentation of the IELTS academic reading component. Discussion centers on some of the finer points involved in scoring band 7 or higher.

A brief overview and exercised to get you familiar with what you should expect to do in part 3 of the IELTS speaking test and how to approach the questions.
In TOEFL iBT Listening section is delivered immediately after the Reading. The Listening section of TOEFL iBT measures your ability to understand spoken English in academic settings. Each part of the Listening section (2 or 3 parts) consists of 1 long conversation and two lectures. The test takers hear each lecture or conversation only once. Lectures and conversations are 3-5 minutes long. While listening the time is not running. The allotted time of 10 minutes for each part is only for answering the questions. http://i-courses.org
Today we are going to take a look at the other extremely important factor in writing a well-thought out essay. It is needed for every single detail that you write. It is the commentary.
A very short evaluation of some spell checkers carried out in 2010 - the results should NOT be taken as totally accurate and are just to show how different all the checkers are in the way they work. They have all been updated since 2010.

Or, strategies for successful essay writing
Things to avoid in essay writing!
Write a creative title for your essay
Consider that the title is the first opportunity you have to inform your reader about the thesis of your essay
NEVER just write “Evaluation Essay”
Capitalize the title correctly
Format the essay with double-spacing and page numbers
FIRST THINGS FIRST
The purpose of an introduction is to:
engage the reader
provide background information
present the thesis
Unless necessary for contextualization, save the evidence to support your claims in the body paragraphs.
Don't serve the main meal at the same time as the appetizer!
Too many details in the introduction:
"Air travel is a form of travel in vehicles that can sustain flight". (Really? No kidding!)
Don't start your essay with a definition of what is probably unnecessary: obesity, global warming, cell phones, the internet, etc.
The purpose of simply taking up space is too obvious and wastes opportunity to craft useful sentences that further your essay.
ONLY use a definition if writing about something truly obscure.
Avoid Useless "definitions"
The trick to avoid these words: insert “as opposed to?”
Basically, very, really, literally, truly, personally (as opposed to...?)
Here is a link to a good page about writing concisely: http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/writing-concisely/
Using Words that Do Not Add Meaning
In this essay I will prove...
I will discuss...
As said in the previous paragraph….
As mentioned before...
Avoid these space fillers! Instead - just write what you are saying.
Don't waste space saying what you WILL write about or what you already wrote.
Example:
Wrong: In this essay I will argue that cell phones should not be used while drive.
Better: Cell phones should not be used while driving.
Announcing Yourself to the Reader
Did you ever get tired of reading essays with questions?
Do you think that these questions would be stronger written as statements?
Are all the questions necessary?
Do they engage the reader?
Especially in a repeating pattern: did you ever wonder, did you ever think, why is it that... blah blah blah?
STOP!
And if writing a question, remember to use a question mark when creating a question, even if it's a rhetorical question.
Rhetorical Questions
Avoid Pointing the Camera at Yourself:
I think, I believe, I feel, in my opinion...
Write what you think in a statement
The reader will know what you think by what you write.
ONLY use “I” when framing a direct response:
“I agree/concede/argue/claim…”
Remove yourself
You didn't actually write the paper, but you're really good at introducing other people's quotes!
Stringing them together is almost writing a paper, right?
Not quite!
The reader needs to hear your voice and your ideas that are supported by the evidence, not replaced by them.
After using a quote, be sure to explain how it supports the claim in the topic sentence and the thesis.
Don’t .

Assignment: write a 10-page persuasive research paper on the topic of your choice. Your task is to present your opinion on an issue or problem in such a way that your presentation reveals your understanding and attempt to convince others of its efficacy. Unlike argument, the persuasive essay requires an audience, which will consist of your classmates and instructor. The Research and Persuasive Essay (RPE) calls upon the skills of analysis and synthesis, i.e. “breaking” the larger issue into smaller components and incorporating opinions and evidence from sources into your own argument. You will also be using the skills of paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting sources to substantiate and support your position. The subject must be controversial: this assignment requires you to take a position and defend it, and you must be able to address the opposition, i.e., the refutation.
Organization: The essay must follow the classical arrangement of persuasive discourse. Use this guideline while preparing your outline:
1. Introduction
Remain neutral
Remain general, no specific points
Generate reader interest
Avoid overuse of sources in the introduction
2. Background
Give overview of differing opinions
Define terms (if relevant)
Provide history (if relevant)
Provide overview of interest groups
Establish credibility or authority
Introduce thesis
3. Confirmation
Your points (1 idea or point per paragraph)
Support opinion with evidence and facts from sources
Comment on how sources prove or illustrate your position
Avoid using source material, especially quotations, as topic or transitional sentences
Think about transitional words and devices that will move the argument forward seamlessly and fluidly
3. Refutation
Identify opposition by name or title (A.C.L.U., the Catholic Church)
Fairly and acc.

Title of your Paper in Upper and Lower Case (Centered, not Bold)
This page begins your Pro-Con position Paper. Begin your introduction here. Be sure to incorporate an attention grabber. You may also provide any necessary contextual or background info here if needed. Do not attempt to prove the thesis statement in these sentences; don’t have obvious ideas. Prove the thesis below it, not above it. If appropriate, provide a bridge from the introductory sentences to the thesis. Remember to employ an objective tone by applying only 3rd person point of view (no 1st: I, me, my, we, our, us, mine) or 2nd: you, your person point of view), unless in direct quote. Then put your thesis statement here; the thesis must be one complete sentence combining your opposition’s argument and your rebuttal.
1st Counter-Argument (your oppositions’ point)
Begin with a topic sentence written in your own words that presents your grounds. Next, apply the evidence/warrant. Signal phrases are highly recommended to introduce new sources (ex: According to Dr. John Smith, head physician at the Mayo Clinic…). Cite your sources in APA format via parenthetical citations. Follow through with a few sentences examining the evidence and connecting it back to your main point. If needed, apply any conciliatory language to connect to the audience and avoid putting them on the defensive. Strive 5-10 developed sentences in a college level paragraph.
****Note: based on which outline approach you chose in Week 5 (divided or alternating) your draft will either continue with 2 other counter-arguments similar to the one above, followed by 3 rebuttal paragraphs – or it will jump straight to the 1st rebuttal as demonstrated below.
1st Rebuttal (your point)
Begin with a topic sentence written in your own words that presents your grounds. Then identify the first point of contention. Discuss this point and why you disagree with it. Point out faults in the argument; explain why the point has little merit. Then argue why your ideas are superior. Then, apply the evidence/warrant. Signal phrases are highly recommended to introduce new sources (ex: According to Dr. John Smith, head physician at the Mayo Clinic…). Cite your sources in APA format via parenthetical citations. Follow through with a few sentences examining the evidence and connecting it back to your main point. No conciliatory verbiage is needed in the rebuttal paragraph, but you should still remain objective and respectful. Strive for a minimum of 5 developed sentences in a college level paragraph.
….From here you will develop your remaining body paragraphs following a similar approach. In the final paper, students should have at least 6 body paragraphs: 3 counterarguments & 3 rebuttals, applying either the alternating or div ...

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

11. Drafting Your Essay
.1. Keep the assignment instructions, all
research notes,
planning activity, and reference
information close by while you write.
2. Remember the introduction is like a
“mini preview” of the paper.
3. It should start generally, and narrow to
a specific point.
4. The persuasive thesis with a pattern for
development is the last sentence of the
introductory paragraph.
11/23/15 11
13. Knowledge Check #3
Which part of your paper
serves like a mini-preview?
A.Title Page
B.Thesis
C.Introduction
D.Conclusion
11/23/15 13
14. 1. Remember to paraphrase and summarize your
source support for the most part.
2. A good rule of thumb is to only use a direct
quotation when the information is so important it
can’t be said in different words without changing
the meaning.
3. No more than 10-15% of a paper should be directly
quoted. That means for a 1,000 word paper, no
more than 100- 150 words can be directly quoted.
4. No matter whether you paraphrase, summarize or
quote, the source must still have an in text citation!
5. Be sure to proofread, revise, and edit your paper.
6. Something many do not realize—a rough draft is not
an unfinished paper—it is an UNPOLISHED paper.
7. he better your rough draft is, the more effective
your feedback from the outside source will be.

16. Knowledge Check #4
Which percentage of your
paper is maximum for
quotations?
A.5%
B.25%
C.10%
D.15%
11/23/15 16
17. Avoiding “floating” quotes when incorporating
sources into your essay
A FLOATING QUOTE HAPPENS WHEN YOU DROP A FULLY QUOTED SENTENCE
INTO YOUR PAPER TO STAND ALONE WITHOUT ATTACHING IT TO ANY OF YOUR
OWN WORDS.
INCORRECT:
Petrarch notices how quickly time goes by; therefore it makes him question why he
waited so long to change his ways to reach eternity in heaven. “Long since I should
have opened mine eyes…and true it is that I have delayed too long” (Jones, 2011, p.
74).
11/23/15 17
18. Example of the correct way to
incorporate a quote.
CORRECT:
Petrarch notices how quickly time goes by; therefore it makes him question why he
waited so long to change his ways to reach eternity in heaven. This is evident in his
statement, “Long since I should have opened mine eyes…and true it is that I have
delayed too long” (Jones, 2011, p. 74).
11/23/15 18
20. Knowledge Check #5
You have to cite a research
source – whether it is a
quotation, paraphrase or
summary?
A.False
B.True
11/23/15 20
21. How to give (and take) constructive
criticism
For example:
• That was a GREAT paper, Mary. I like the way that it was organized. It made it easy to follow
(affirmation #1). You might want to be sure to run spell check before submitting papers in
the future. I noticed a few spelling errors (suggestion, with supporting reason). You also cited
key points from our textbook to illustrate that you read it. That really helped demonstrate
the validity of your key points (affirmation #2).
• Note that the suggestion above doesn't condemn Mary for not running the spell check. That
is, it doesn't contain a negative judgment like "Boy, Mary, you really messed up. I saw lots of
spelling errors in your paper." Instead the example above tactfully suggests a way that Mary
can improve her paper, while identifying a fact (there were spelling errors) that she can
check and independently verify.
When asked to give constructive feedback to
your peers, it is important that you both
1.encourage one another and
2.suggest ways to improve.
There are a couple of standard methods for
giving feedback. One is the "sandwich" because
people commonly sandwich a suggestion
between two affirmations (things you liked).
11/23/15 21
22. Accepting Constructive Criticism
from your peers, instructors and others
1. When you receive negative feedback or lots
of marks on your paper from someone else,
don't overreact, get mad, and fire off a nasty
response.
2. Take time to look at what has been marked.
Remember, this is not about YOU—it’s about
the words on the page.
3. Constructive criticism is not a personal attack.
4. Be quick to help and slow to anger is probably
a good motto.
5. If you do feel offended by what someone
wrote, it's best respond to them privately (or
speak to the instructor first) to explain your
reaction and why you feel the way you do.
11/23/15 22
23. Try to look at all the marks this way
1. Every mistake marked on your
paper is just one more point saved
for your final draft grade.
2. You should be hoping for lots of
marks on your rough draft.
3. Without the mistakes pointed out,
you won't be able to fix them.
4. When reviewing someone else’s
paper, think of it as your best
friend's paper.
5. You want to help your friend get
the best grade possible before the
instructor gets it and starts
marking on it.
6. Be thankful for the help!
11/23/15 23
25. Knowledge Check #6
One method of giving
constructive criticism is
A.The book method
B.The sandwich method
C.The “I am right” method
D.The only “tell them what
