  4. 4. Vocabulary Practice Quizzes<br />Each Vocabulary Practice Quiz includes 5 to 15 words chosen because of their frequency and significance to the meaning of the book<br />
  5. 5. Vocabulary Practice Quizzes<br />The words should be engaging for the student as they have come from a book within their reading range that they choose<br />

  9. 9. Teaching Routine<br />Step 1<br />The Teacher identifies a student who is doing appropriate reading practice:<br />Passing their reading practice quizzes over 90%, or <br />Reached their goal, or<br />Ready for a challenge but not a higher book level<br />

Teaching Routine<br />Step 2<br />The teacher asks the student to select a book from the VP Quiz list and takes the bookmark from the box<br />The book should be in the student’s reading range<br />The student could take the VP Quiz on a book read previously, but should review the book again<br />The student uses the bookmark to review the words they will need to define when finished reading<br />
  11. 11. Teaching Routine<br />Step 3<br />The student selects a book from their reading range as they normally would:<br />If explicitly wanting the student to complete the VP quiz, remember to ensure the student has a list of VP Quiz books<br />

Teaching Routine<br />Step 4<br />The student reads the book as normal:<br />They can use the bookmark to remind themselves of the words they will need to define<br />They could tick off the word in pencil when they see it for the first time<br />They could even note the page they see the word on for the first time<br />
  13. 13. Teaching Routine<br />Step 5<br />The student completes the Reading Practice Quiz as normal:<br />They should pass the Reading Practice Quiz before they attempt the VP Quiz<br />
  14. 14. Teaching Routine<br />Step 6<br />The student reviews the words listed on the bookmark prior to attempting the VP Quiz:<br />They will need to find the meaning of any words they don’t know<br />They could re-read part of the book with the word in it, or<br />They can use a dictionary to find the meaning<br />

Teaching Routine<br />Step 7<br />The student takes the VP quiz with 5 to 15 words including<br />Words from the book they just read<br />Words that they got wrong on a previous VP Quiz<br />Review words <br />Those they got right on a previous VP Quiz<br />Those they got wrong from a previous review list<br />

Teaching Routine<br />Step 8<br />The student gets an additional TOPS report that details the words:<br />They got right from this book<br />They got wrong from this book (find the meaning)<br />They got right this time, but had gotten wrong before<br />They had gotten right before and right this time<br />
  17. 17. Teaching Routine<br />Step 9<br />The student uses their TOPS Report to find the meaning of words they have gotten wrong<br />They can review the book<br />They could use a dictionary<br />The teacher should consider additional explicit teaching activities the student might complete<br />
