1. Psychology Notes: Work place stress:
Stress in the work place can cause health problems causing a less productive business.
Accidents in the wok place causing costs. Large staffs turn over. And it may affect
home life.
 Role conflicts.
 Workload.
 Ambiguity about what's to be done.
 The working environment.
 Limited control on work load.
 Predictability of the work.
Key study, Geir Johansson et al (1978): To see weather work based stressors increase
arousal and stress related illnesses.
High risk group- high responsibility and repetitive.
Low risk group- low responsibility and very repetitive.
Urine and hormone samples recorded.
High risk group had high stress hormone levels and stress related illnesses. Low risk
group was considerably lower.
Long term stressors at work and cause stress related illness and absence.
Evaluation of key study:
Scientific- samples taken.
Practical applications, workforce illness can be avoided.
Lab experiment, results are reliable and conducted in a controlled environment.
Stressors not identified.
No individual differences accounted for.
Small sample, results cant be generalised.
Only two occupations used so results can be generalised to other jobs.
Overall evaluation of stress in the work place:
Practical applications to aid work place stress and reduce illness.
Research can easily become out dated.
Research gender bias.
Different methods of collecting data so research is inconclusive.
