Welcome.
Today we will be starting a unit on poetry. This webquest is designed to help you get an
understanding of five different types of poetry, along with literary terms that are often times
found in poems.
Introduction.
Pretend you are an interrogator wanting to get to the bottom of a case. The main suspect is a
poem, but it is being very difficult. Use the clues found within the tasks to try to make sense of
the poem and what it is trying to say. Be sure to pay attention to each set of directions to
successfully complete this assignment.
Tasks.
1. Your first task is to use the provided links to find the definition for the following terms:
alliteration, metaphor, mood, personification, point of view, rhyme scheme, rhythm,
simile, stanza, voice, ballad, sonnet, haiku, limerick, freeverse.
2. Your second task is to use the provided link and apply any five of the terms to a poem.
You will state the poem title, author, the vocab term you will be applying, and of course
the application.
3. Your third task is to react to the way the term was used in the poem. Did you like it? Hate
it? Did it make the poem make more sense or more confusing?
4. Your fourth and final task is to use your memory of the definitions to complete the
crossword puzzle on the last page.
Process.
Process for task 1.
Use the provided link to define the following poetry terms: alliteration, metaphor, mood,
personification, point of view, rhyme scheme, rhythm, simile, stanza, voice, ballad, sonnet,
haiku, limerick, freeverse.
Link to use:
Dictionary.com
Process for task 2.
Use the provided links to apply any of the five terms of your choosing to a poem. You must
include the poem title, author, the vocab term you will be applying, and of course your
application of the term.
Links to use:
Dictionary.com
Poets.org
Process for task 3.
Give a reaction to the way the poetry term was used in the poem you chose. Did you like the
way it was used or not? Did it help make sense in the poem or was it too confusing?
Process for task 4.
Without looking at your terms, complete the crossword puzzle on the last page.
Evaluation.
Students will be evaluated upon completion of definitions, application, and crossword puzzle.
The students must define each word to receive full credit for that portion. The student must
give the author name, poem title, and vocab term, and accurate application of the word to
receive full credit for this portion. The crossword puzzle must be completed and free of
errors to receive full credit.
Conclusion.
You have finished the introductory webquest for our poetry unit and are now prepared for the
week. Don’t forget these words because we will be using them every day this week. I hope
you’re ready to dive into some poetry!

Tasks. 1. Your first task is to use the provided links to find the definition for the following terms: alliteration, metaphor, mood, personification, point of view, rhyme scheme, rhythm, simile, stanza, voice, ballad, sonnet, haiku, limerick, freeverse. 2. Your second task is to use the provided link and apply any five of the terms to a poem. You will state the poem title, author, the vocab term you will be applying, and of course the application. 3. Your third task is to react to the way the term was used in the poem. Did you like it? Hate it? Did it make the poem make more sense or more confusing? 4.
