A stanza is a combination of lines, just like how a
paragraph is a combination of sentences.
Types of Stanza:
a. Couplet - two lines
b. Tercet - three lines
c. Terza Rima - three stanzas of three lines each
d. Quatrain - four lines
e. Sestet - six lines
f. Octet - eight lines

3. Meter
Meter pertains to the
measurement of the poem
based upon the following:
1. the arrangement and number
of syllables per line (such as the
5-7-5 standard in Haikus) and;
2. the arrangement and number
of stressed and unstressed
syllables per line.

4.Rhyme
On the other hand, rhyme pertains to the likeness of sound.
If the poem has no rhyme, then it is called a Blank Verse.
Types of Rhyme:
a. End rhyme - the most common type of rhyme which can
be found at the end of the lines.
b. Internal/Leonine rhyme - the rhyme which can be found
in between two or more words in a single line.
c. Masculine rhyme - the rhyme consisting of a single
stressed syllable, as in “car” and “far.”

d. Feminine rhyme - the rhyme consisting of a
stressed syllable followed by an unstressed
syllable, as in “mother” and “father.”
e. Perfect rhyme - the exact match of sounds
in a rhyme, as in “ask” and “task.”
f. Slant rhyme - the imperfect rhyme, also
called oblique rhyme or off rhyme, wherein the
sounds are similar but not exactly the same, as
in “port” and “heart.”

5. Rhythm
In close connection to rhyme scheme,
rhythm pertains to the succession and/or
alteration of similar sounds in the poem,
whether within or at the end of the lines
“There was an old woman who lived in a shoe..”
“I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.”

Now that we know what rhyme
and rhythm are, then we are
ready for rhyme scheme. Also
called the Rhythmic Pattern,
this element pertains to the
rhythm of the poem, which is
made identifiable by assigning
letters to each set of rhymes.

the writer’s choice and use of words.
Being grateful, in love, delighted, fearful,
inspired, anguished, and at peace are some
examples of tone.
