Elements of
POETRY
01.
POETRY
 the counterpart of Prose in
the sense that it is made of
lines and stanzas instead of
sentences and paragraphs
 expresses an emotion
 tells a story
 has unique elements
ELEMENTS OF POETRY
1. Line
 Lines may follow a
consistent number
of syllables or not
depending on the
type of poems
being written
ELEMENTS OF POETRY
2. Stanza
A stanza is a combination of lines, just like how a
paragraph is a combination of sentences.
Types of Stanza:
a. Couplet - two lines
b. Tercet - three lines
c. Terza Rima - three stanzas of three lines each
d. Quatrain - four lines
e. Sestet - six lines
f. Octet - eight lines

ELEMENTS OF POETRY
3. Meter
Meter pertains to the
measurement of the poem
based upon the following:
1. the arrangement and number
of syllables per line (such as the
5-7-5 standard in Haikus) and;
2. the arrangement and number
of stressed and unstressed
syllables per line.
ELEMENTS OF POETRY
4.Rhyme
On the other hand, rhyme pertains to the likeness of sound.
If the poem has no rhyme, then it is called a Blank Verse.
Types of Rhyme:
a. End rhyme - the most common type of rhyme which can
be found at the end of the lines.
b. Internal/Leonine rhyme - the rhyme which can be found
in between two or more words in a single line.
c. Masculine rhyme - the rhyme consisting of a single
stressed syllable, as in “car” and “far.”
ELEMENTS OF POETRY
d. Feminine rhyme - the rhyme consisting of a
stressed syllable followed by an unstressed
syllable, as in “mother” and “father.”
e. Perfect rhyme - the exact match of sounds
in a rhyme, as in “ask” and “task.”
f. Slant rhyme - the imperfect rhyme, also
called oblique rhyme or off rhyme, wherein the
sounds are similar but not exactly the same, as
in “port” and “heart.”

5. Rhythm
In close connection to rhyme scheme,
rhythm pertains to the succession and/or
alteration of similar sounds in the poem,
whether within or at the end of the lines
“There was an old woman who lived in a shoe..”
“I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.”
ELEMENTS OF POETRY
6. RhymeScheme
Now that we know what rhyme
and rhythm are, then we are
ready for rhyme scheme. Also
called the Rhythmic Pattern,
this element pertains to the
rhythm of the poem, which is
made identifiable by assigning
letters to each set of rhymes.
LET’S DO A
RALLY
TABLE!
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
