Hagar was Sarai's Egyptian maidservant. Due to Sarai's infertility, Sarai offered Hagar to Abram to bear a child on her behalf. Hagar conceived and bore Ishmael. However, this caused conflict between Hagar and Sarai. When mistreated by Sarai, Hagar fled into the desert but an angel found her and told her to return and submit to Sarai. The angel also promised Hagar that Ishmael would father a great nation. Years later, when Ishmael mocked Isaac, Sarah insisted that Hagar and Ishmael be sent away. God again assured Hagar during this difficult time and provided for her and Ishmael in the desert.
