- There are a few things we know about women in automotive. We can freely recite the statistics about our influence in the purchase decision and the fact that a growing number of women are the primary driver. We know that transportation has no gender, and yet the perception is that “automotive” is not about us, for us, and we certainly can’t be the decision-maker at the OEM or the dealer level. Really? We understand that there is a need for a cultural shift, but who will be courageous enough to take a stand? Well, 16-years ago the GM Women’s Retail Initiative took a stand and we have been creating a cultural and paradigm shift since our inception. Now called the GM Women’s Retail Network, we are taking a stand, making room for the next generation of women dealers, key managers, and even technicians.

- Recognizing the Purchasing Power of Women, GM commissioned a study to look at the reasons why “She’s just not into Automotive” as a career of choice for women and as consumers. The study looked at the reasons that women were under represented in Automotive Retail and the fact that for women purchasing or servicing vehicles ranked second only to going to the dentist. As a result of this initial study, the Women’s Retail Network was founded in 2001 with the endorsement of GM Senior Leadership. Our goal is to attract women into automotive retail careers as dealers, general managers, and employees to create more gender-balance in the retail environment and to create a pathway for women to become dealer operators. The alignment of General Motors Women’s Retail Network and NAMAD is to create a pipeline of qualified ethnic minority women to grow representation of minority women as dealers in our GM dealer network

- 2017 Drive to Succeed Scholarship 2017 marks year 7, in our support of women in Automotive Retail education. 2016 Drive to Succeed was a biggest fundraising year in our history. Through the generous support of GM women dealers and our business partners, DTS was able to grant $52,500 to 14 deserving women. Since 2011, $152,000 has been awarded to 52 students. The program was established by the WDAC to support women pursuing Automotive Retail education. The goal is to fill the pipeline with women ready to hit the ground running. Traditional and non-traditional students pursuing 2 or 4-year business degrees with a focus on automotive retail and women pursing technical certification are eligible for Drive to Succeed.
- Our commitment: Create a diverse dealer network AND a Diverse dealership workforce The Retail environment must reflect the communities we serve Goal GM Minority Dealer Development (GM MDD) and Northwood University (NU) are partnering to provide internship opportunities to NU minority students with members of the GM Minority Dealer Advisory Council (GM MDAC). The intent of this pilot program is to introduce the NU minority student population to Automotive Retail careers. The program is open to all minority* students in all major fields of study.
- Eve Knudtsen is President of Knudtsen Chevrolet Co. in Post Falls, Idaho. She is the third generation to own and operate the dealership her grandfather started in 1939. Eve grew up in Coeur d’Alene, graduating from Coeur d’Alene High School. She attended North Idaho College and Northwood University. She has an Associate of Arts degree in Automotive Marketing and a Bachelors of Business Administration with majors in Economics and Management that she received from Northwood University. She completed the National Dealers Association Dealer Candidate Academy and has also earned her Masters of Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University. Eve has a long-standing passion for serving the community. She has served on numerous board and committees including past president of Concerned Businesses of North Idaho, and past chairman of the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce. She is currently the immediate past chairman of Jobs Plus Coeur d’Alene Area Economic Development Corporation and is the past Guardian of Bethel #7 Jobs Daughters International of Coeur d’Alene. She is currently a board member of the Kootenai Health Foundation and is the co-chair for their capital campaign. Eve is a past recipient of Soroptomist Woman of Distinction for Business and Professional and 2006 recipient of Time Magazine’s Quality Dealer of the Year for Idaho. She is committed to educational initiatives throughout North Idaho including having been one of the individuals that purchased the land for KTEC, a career technical high school serving three school districts. Eve lives in Coeur d’Alene with her husband, Wayne Cofield, and daughters, Lauren Benedict and Kendra Cofield. Questions: First Question: “GM is short ___ number of technicians (I am hoping you have access to this statistic for I couldn’t find it), there is more demand than there are candidates, Where do you see us going to recruit candidates to fill this role in the future? Answer will be structured around: Through the Drive to Succeed scholarship with the hopes that’ll promote and inspire women to look into the tech and service side of business. Second Question: “Where do you see value in being a part of a WRN 20group versus other 20groups?” Answer will be structured around: WRN 20groups lead with; here is where I am struggling, here is where I need help, lends itself to member’s vulnerabilities and allows them to receive advice and ways to make positive change. In other 20groups the conversation is more focused on here is where I am doing great.
- Elgie Bright is in his 7th year at Northwood University, teaching various classes in Dealership Variable and Fixed operations, Financial Statement Analysis, and Dealership Business Management. Elgie has spent 18 years as a District Sales and Service Manager for General Motors and Eight Years in Retail Automotive Management at Art Moran Pontiac-GMC. Elgie holds a bachelors degree from Adrian College and an MBA from Northwood University. He is the Father of 3 Adult daughters and lives in Flushing, MI with his wife, and a hyper Jack Russell Terrier. In his free time, Elgie enjoys jazz, blues, and sports activities. Questions: How has Northwood prepared female students to explore the exciting world of automotive. What are some of the barriers to entry for females in the retail automotive industry.
- Marisabel Cole has enjoyed an exciting career with General Motors for the past 25 years. Her passion for the automotive industry has galvanized her into finding new roads that led her to hold key Sales and Service positions in Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Puerto Rico, and Florida—one of the most rewarding of her opportunities was as The Regional Service Manager for Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East (LAAM). In her current role, she manages a team focused on growing GM Dealer Fixed Operations. Marisabel is confident that GM has provided the dealers with the right tools and she is committed to driving that message and helping them optimize those resources to exceed customer expectations in order to earn customers for life.
