Women Body Image
In a video that models made to reveal their body image insecurities on camera to Megan Friedman,
creator of the D.EFECT add, is impacting to the media. The women describe the things that they
hate about their body, including what they have been called or told by other people due to their
flaws. The models start by describing how they dislike their shoulder, smile, height, nose, teeth gap,
eyes, birthmarks, and body formation and at the end of the video it tells us to take note that we are
all beautiful. This problem is not only found in one model, but in a large portion of the population.
Models are not born perfect, some have eating disorders, get plastic surgeries, and get picked on
because of what society has made people think women and ... Show more content on

Society makes us, men and women, think that in order to be loved then we have to have a flat belly
or be incredibly fit. However, there are a handful of people who struggle to get there through dieting
that decide to take the easy way out by becoming anorexic. Being anorexic is a serious condition
that affects your mental being and can eventually kill you. "Thoughts about dieting, food, and your
body may take up most of your day–leaving little time for friends, family, and other activities you
used to enjoy. Life becomes a relentless pursuit of thinness and going to extremes to lose weight.
But no matter how skinny you become, it's never enough" (www.helpguide.org). To be beautiful
being skinny shouldn't be the way to get there, being fit and healthy should be. There are other
alternative diets that can be useful to our body's image and can help up not only mentally but also
physically. In order to be beautiful people do not need to go through any kind of eating disorder due
to what society has said or done to make it seem right. Society is corrupting young men and women
to be more of what celebrities aren't; they are giving us false hope. They should be taking pics of
celebrities exercising and eating right instead of them walking out the hospital from

Body Esteem : The Causes Of Poor Body Image
The Causes of Poor Body Image
Positive or negative body image can highly affect one's self–esteem. High self–esteem is important
because "[self–esteem] can be viewed as a key indicator of psychological well–being" (Clay, 2005).
Cognitive health can be just as vital as physical health. However, a study found a profound drop in
teenage girls' self–esteem (Clay, 2005). Young girls' mental health is being affected by their poor
body image. While lack of education, weight loss advertisements, and celebrities portrayal of
healthy lifestyles are often underlying causes for girls' poor body image, digital editing and media
overrepresentation of underweight women are the biggest culprit.
Many teenage girls are unaware of healthy body proportions because schools fail to educate girls on
body positivity. Adolescent girls are coming to a point in their lives where they encounter bodily
changes from puberty. Changes, like acne and weight gain, create a gap between developing girls
and society's female beauty standard (Clay, 2005). Most teenage girls are comparing themselves to
older women who have outgrown the awkward teenage years. In schools, there is no requirement to
discuss body mass charts in class (Health Education, 2017). This creates a problem with healthy
body images. In a study, young girls stated their ideal body size would be five feet seven inches, one
hundred pounds and size five (Clay, 2005). However, at that height the girls would be severely
anorexic. The healthy

Body Positivity
Google body positivity. Your screen will be flooded with pictures of women of many colors, sizes,
and ages. Scroll through these pictures, and you will notice that males are hugely under–represented
within the context this trend. Body positivity in modern mainstream culture often focuses on the
sexualization of women and glosses over the negative message to which men are exposed. This
cultural desire to be muscular, "shredded," and "ripped" has led to a rise in body dysmorphia in men,
which can have severe consequences on the development and growth of boys both mentally and
physically. The media often encourages all body shapes in women, however, larger men are objects
of comedy, and frail men are epitomes of a "nerd" or "geek". Just like women, many men struggle
with body dysmorphia, but do not speak of it because societal norms encourage them to suppress
their feelings.
Body dysmorphia develops at a young age. Boys grow up idolizing star athletes and typical "alpha"
males. Seeing massive 6–foot–tall men with over 200lbs of muscle, they begin to desire and imitate
these physiques. Even on television, men are often shirtless to show off their chiseled pecs and their
six–pack abs. Children growing up with these images believe that this is the ideal man and the body
they should have. While little girls had the ideal "Barbie" body, a 2002 study called "Men and
Masculinities" reveals how children's toys in the 1990s exceeded "the muscularity of even the
largest human

Shocking Bodies Documentary
Bodies Online Video Essay The documentary, Shocking Bodies Exhibition, was published in 2014,
which mainly discusses a plasticized Body Worlds museum that the public can attend at any time
and then further discusses ethical concerns. This documentary was brought about because 20/20
wanted to investigate more into the plasticized bodies' origins. They were curious where the bodies
were coming from and if they were the bodies of executed prisoners. Throughout this paper, two
ethical issues, a theoretical view point, and why I support these exhibits will be further discussed
Two Ethical Issues & Theoretical View Point One ethical issue that stands with the Body Worlds
museum is the fact that people are not one hundred percent sure who these bodies belong to or
where these bodies are exactly coming from, which also includes the manager who originally
obtained these bodies for the museum. One man from China that worked for this Chinese Dalian
medical University, that refused to reveal his identity, told 20/20 that he picked up bodies on the
streets at night and then sold them for two hundred dollars each to the United States. Despite ...

Persuasive Essay On Donate Your Body
Donating your body to science can really make a big difference in the medical education. Some
people value their education just by donating themselves to the doctors, researchers and others. I
think that by doing that can really help other people that need anything from the body like an organ.
People even donate it to medicine to see if a treatment may work on it to test it out on other people
that are really sick. I believe that people should donate their bodies because it can make a difference
in the world. At the same time, it can be a bad thing because you do not have a saying in where your
body is going to go or in what branch of science your body will land, of course those programs will
cremate your body or just return you once they finish with using you and make a funeral without
paying a single dime but who would want that? Those are the small things on why people choose
not to do it.
Some people ask themselves, should I donate my body to science, I say, why not?
The human race often wonders about their options to place one's cadaver. In some religious beliefs
and traditions, this question is already answered for them. Others without a biblical fall back think,
what even happens to the condition of my body when I die?
They would start to assess things and look over their options. People have many sources and ways
of finding out how to plan for his or her death. Talking to an advocate for donating your body to
science would inform the person all the benefits to

Introduction There is success in body care. Behold the Body Shop, one of the famous international

Profile
The name behind the Body Shop, a famous cosmetic line for decades now, is Anita Roddick. On
October 23, 1942 in Littlehampton, Sussex, England marks her birth to an immigrant Italian family.
After completing her degree at the Newton Park College of education, she worked as a part–time
teacher and for the United Nations in Geneva. She traveled to different places like Tahiti, New

She risked selling alternative body care products. Nevertheless, she dealt with it with optimism. In
order to face success, it is of crucial importance to think of the ways by which the business model
will thrive in the marketplace. Another is to assess the strengths and opportunities of the business.
Lastly, it is always important to innovate, as this has always described entrepreneurs (Baghai, Coley,
and White, 2000). Innovations are proven to increase the business' performance. During Christmas
last year, upon launching a new product, i.e. a strong Christmas gift range, and improving customer
services, operating profits from the division boosted to 17% to ₤11.7 million (Geary, 2005). This is a
recent event in the innovation strategies of Body Shop. Schumpeter (1939), as cited in Mintrom,
Schneider and Teske (1995), asserts that an entrepreneur functions to innovate, which means
devising new production function out of the existing factors of production. In simpler terms, an
entrepreneur is one who introduces a new product or a product that deviates from the ordinary. Such
is the basic idea or definition of an entrepreneur from which its modern definitions have developed.
Apart from the above, there is something about the packaging of the Body Shop products. Roddick
started with small bottles since that was what she was complaining on. According to Kassaye and

Body Modifications: The Deliberate Altering Of The Human Body
"Body modification (or body alteration) is the deliberate altering of the human anatomy or human
physical appearance." –Wikipedia
Body modifications have been practiced by humans for thousands of years. It's a common practice
in modern society, mainly to make one's body conform to societal or personal ideals of beauty.
There are other motives as well, such as health reasons, religious beliefs, shock value, and to display
affiliation or membership to a group. Some of the most common forms of body modification are:
Cutting and dying hair
Shaving and other forms of body hair removal
Tanning
Braces

The majority of piercers use jewelry that is made of low quality materials, that can increase the risk
of the body rejecting the jewelry. The safest material for body piercings is titanium, as people have a
high percentage of allergies and sensitivity to other metals. The piercing material isn't the only thing
to look out for, though. On most piercing jewelry, there is a screw at the end of the post that allows
the wearer to screw a ball or other ornament on the end of it. The problem with this is, when
inserting the post, this sharp screw is forced to go through the piercing hole. This can create tiny
tears inside the piercing, and can cause inflammation or infection. I currently only know of one
piercer on Long Island who is a member of the Association of Professional Piercers. He uses high
quality materials and is very knowledgeable. His name is John Alonzo and he works at South Shore
Tattoo Co. on Merrick Road in Amityville. If you're ever in search of a skillful professional piercer

Bog Bodies
This book informs the reader about bog bodies and how crucial they are to scientists because they're
a journey to the past. Bog bodies are bodies that were deposited in a bog shortly after death, they
were then naturally preserved in the bog. To clarify why they're so important, bog bodies are usually
so well preserved that their skin, intestines and other parts of their body remain. Scientists study
them and they are able to find when they died, using radiocarbon analysis, and how they died which
is only possible it's not a skeleton because certain wounds can only be seen on skin and not on
bones. There was a section in that text that impacted me, it was: "With new tests and procedure, with
determination and perhaps some luck, scientists may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scientists look at only a few apparatus to discover additional information about the past, they
analyze fossils, artifacts, preserved bodies, and ancient architecture. With bog bodies gone, that
leaves a miniscule amount of items to study. Artifacts or items belonging to ancient people don't
provide tremendous amounts of information. Additionally, fossils belong to a whole other category,
animals and plants from prehistoric times. Consequently, this doesn't provide information about
primitive culture and don't assist scientists seeking data on primeval civilization. Furthermore, bog
bodies are probably the most complex sources of enlightenment because they can provide clothing,
weapons, and materials of specific eras, as well as informing us about their actions. For instance, of
scientists suspected the person was sacrificed we can conclude that whatever civilization they were
from practiced human sacrifice. In all honesty, bog bodies would be a grand loss because they're far
more intriguing than other artifacts. Considering this, bog bodies supply insight about someone's life
and it simulates reading an autobiography because you find out multitudes of information about the
person, even if they're dead. Another bog body they studied was the Yde Girl, she was found in 1987
in the Netherlands but she had died 2,000 years earlier. While they were studying her remains, they
found at she had scoliosis, which impairs how you walk because it's a mild spinal curvature. The
toes of her right foot also signified that she might've been slightly pigeon toed. Scientists also
noticed that she was stabbed and strangled with her on belt, which was left on her neck after death.
Perhaps she was considered undesirable in her society because of her "flaws" and killed because of
this. However, there are several other ways she could've died, it could've been a sacrificial

Body Image Of Women
Body image pertains to judgement about themselves or about their body perspective. But, what do
you expect when the media is covered in pictures of "perfect" models and celebrities? Women's
self–esteem is lowering because they look at these women in comparison to themselves and they do
not like the difference between the two, which leads them to belief that they need to change
themselves. The media has gotten way out of hand with body image, and not in a good way. Women
believe that the thinner person is widely accepted, but not too small of course because then you will
be thought to have an eating disorder, leading to insecurities. Women feel like in order to post a

surgeries that can fix any flaws that they have. If they hate something about themselves they can pay
someone to fix their flaws. They can get their body parts fixed and they can change anything and
they can improve their perspective of themselves. Magazines can also photoshop and edit pictures to
make people look better than they actually look. They can change what their hair looks like, what
their eyes look like, and their teeth too. They can change heir body shape to make their body figure
look better. Women do not realize that people can change a picture pretty fast and make them look
like someone different. They can edit their photos but they cant always change what their make up
and hair color and everything else looks like because all of the good apps cost a lot of money and
require brains and style to be able to function the app. Women want to be compared to women in a

change those models that they look up too. Women body image has horrible out looks on women. It

Analysis Of The Body By Stephen King
In the short story, The Body, written by Stephen King, various life lessons are evident in the
adventure the four main characters have. The life lessons chosen by the author are reflective of life
lessons that could be learned by the reader, and life lessons that are not always vocalized. In Stephen
King's The Body, the group of young boys learn many different life lessons including family not
always being trustworthy, some things should be kept to yourself, and that friends, even best friends,
can split up. The main characters all have unique, yet abusive, relationships with their families. As
said in the introductory paragraph, this choice made by Stephen King was incredibly important and
wise to make because especially in the sixties, which is when the story takes place, it was a common
occurrence that was often overlooked. One of the most evident life lessons in the story was that
relatives should not get a free pass to hurt each other. The character Teddy's relationship with his
father was overlooked, exclusively by Teddy himself, "Teddy's dad took Teddy over to the big
woodstove at the back of the kitchen and shoved the side of Teddy's head down against one of the
cast–iron burner plates". Teddy had a lot of respect for the father for the soul reason that he is his
father. If it was not for the fact that Teddy's father messed him up physically and mentally for life,
Teddy would treat the person with a lot less respect and nobility. Despite that his father only

The Perfect Body Image
The word "ideal" is a frequently used term to describe the sense of perfection.
Actors, models, and celebrities who are seen in magazines, television, and/or social media
demonstrate the physical characteristics of the widely desired ideal–image; which includes of being
a female who is tall, slender, and blemish–free or a male who is tall, masculine, and smooth–
skinned. Because the media constantly presents models and actresses with an unachievable body
image it influences both feminine and masculine genders in believing what is considered to be the
perfect ideal image in today's society. Unfortunately, it is within the human nature to strive for
perfection and because today's generation is frequently surrounded by the idealized image a large ...

Many people have unwilling fallen as victims of this perfect body image that are commonly shown
in magazines and advertisements influencing them to discipline their bodies so they could achieve
this standardized ideal image. Models in advertisements are represented as being perfect, but some
people are unaware that there are digital effects in play, such as Photoshop. There are more than one
third of women who want to have the appearance of a female model; unfortunately, there are also as
much men who want to appear like the muscular male models that are presented in the mass media.
Since there is such pressure in having a good body women and men can experience societal pressure
and guilt about their self body image. Since having the perfect ideal image is the biggest concern in
today's society, many people are constantly reminded as to what is considered as being normal and

The Human Body And The Body
Besides learning science, I always wanted to learn more about how our bodies functioned. As a
child, my innate curiosity was fed by reading books that explained the mysteries of the human body
such as why we sneeze, or why our hairs stand when we are cold. As I learned more about the
human body in college through courses on molecular biology and nutrition, my passion for applying
science to health and the body grew. However, I still do not feel as though I have learned enough
even after four years of studying biochemistry. I looked for other ways to enrich my knowledge of
how the body works by enrolling in online courses such as medicinal chemistry, medicine in the
digital age, and musculoskeletal cases in anatomy. As I learned more about medicine and the human
body, I became more eager to use that knowledge to comfort others through medicine.
After hearing of negative healthcare experiences and experiencing health issues such as severe
dysmenorrhea, the desire to help others feel at ease grew as well. Experiencing severe dysmenorrhea
as a teenager was debilitating. Once a month, I was crippled by painful cramps. I was unable to take
pain relieving medicine until after I vomited from pain and nausea. By that time, my body was so
exhausted that I fell into a deep sleep once I closed my eyes. Every month, I wondered why I
experienced it and how I could stop it. To this day, no one knows for sure why such an event occurs
but I have taken it upon myself to find some answers.

The Human Body in Art
In my understanding and opinion, the body in art was the starting point for any king of art form. As
some people have said, art may have actually started with the body, such as the decoration of the
body shown for example in Zulu when they used to paint their faces with natural colours in order for
them to create camouflage and catch and kill their prey. In many ways, art is for the human
experience and the experience of being here, the presence, which is shaped with the representation
of the human figure. A body can convey class, age, gender and sexuality. The 'Bamana Twin Figures'
(Mali, 20th Century – Figure 1) is the representation of the Man and the Woman, a very powerful
expression of male and female. Even though both their faces are exactly the same, the parts of the
body can reveal the discrimination: genitalia, breasts and even hair. The reason why Egyptian art has
not changed and looks very similar since 1479 – 1425 BCE up until now is very intentional; they are
trying to maintain their cultural tradition in which argues for stability. The Egyptian pharaoh
"Akhenaten' (Figure 2) is unusual compared to other Egyptian figures, such as the traditional King,
which has broad shoulders and muscular body. 'Akhenaten' is a lot softer and that encouraged people
to think and believe that the body was portrayed in such way because of some sort of illness or
disease, but Egyptian art was all about the concept and not the reality, it was just the idea of how it

Body Image Pressure
Today, a large majority of women will admit to being dissatisfied with the way their body looks.
This is because of a thing called body image. Body image is the way one thinks their body should
look, and how they think others see it. This has become a major issue essentially because of the
media. The mainstream media has an impact on body image because they exploit women with what
most individuals would consider the perfect body, usually for advertising purposes. Since the media
has a tendency to only show women with one specific body type, this makes other women feel
pressured to look that way. Women get the impression that if they don't have a flawless body, then
they are not beautiful. Also, social media specifically has contributed to the ... Show more content

Negative thoughts about one's body can be found in girls as early as six years old. Even girls at this
young of an age have reportedly wanted to look "sexy." For many adolescent girls, they have always
been exposed to the media. It is a part of their lifestyle. Ultimately, what they see through the media,
is what they believe to be true. When they see the media promoting the perfect body, they truly
believe that is how their body is supposed to look. Since young people spend more time on social
media, they are more inclined to seeing images of the ideal body every single day. Through social
media, teen girls get attention, or praised on their appearances through likes and comments. "27
percent feel stressed out about how they look when they post pictures. 22 percent feel badly about
themselves when nobody comments on or "likes" the photos they post" (Naylor). The worst possible
outcome due to body image dissatisfaction in adolescent girls is for one to develop an eating
disorder. Anorexia is an eating disorder in which one will starve themselves in order to lose weight,
or not gain any. Bulimia, is an eating disorder where one will binge eat, and then purge everything
they have ate. One more eating disorder that many people don't recognize as one, because honestly it
doesn't make sense is binge eating in which one will eat large amounts of food and won't be able to
stop themselves. All of which can be very life threatening. "In the United States, the discrepancy
between the extraordinarily thin body type promoted in the media and the reality of average
women's bodies has been implicated in the steady rise of eating disorders, especially among
adolescents. Experts believe that today, more than ten million women and girls suffer from anorexia,
bulimia, or related illnesses, with the onset of such problems occurring in patients of younger and
younger ages" (Balarro and Wagner). Since the body mass

The Importance Of Body Image
Body image and appearance is something women caution about when it comes to their bodies.
Numerous women care about how they look like, how others think of them and how they feel about
themselves. Therefore, women feel embarrassed of their appearance in comparison to others. The
concept of being thin is something female desire when looking at themselves in the mirror.
Nevertheless, several feel dissatisfy when looking in the mirror as the image they see does not
portray the image in their mind. Body image is a concerning topic for society as women feel

Girls Feel Pressure to Have the Perfect Body Body image has grown to be a very large issue in our
society. "This is due to social media growing and the ability to use technology" (Schuten). Women
today experience many different pressures and expectations from society. One of the major
expectations of young girls is to have the perfect body image. Society is causing girls to worry about
their outside appearance instead of focusing on their daily roles in life. For many years' girls, have
been put under the pressure of looking a certain way. The pressure that young girls experience

cannot change. Everyone has flaws, even supermodels do, just learn to accept them. It is not about

Unrealistic Body Image
Entertainment is the action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment. People
seek out many forms of entertainment to seek pleasure and enjoyment in their life such as watching
movies and television, reading books and magazines, and listening to music. As much as these
things should provide enjoyment to people's lives, sometimes media can have a negative impact on
people. A major way the media exudes a negative connotation is though the unrealistic body images
it promotes. The media's unrealistic body images is a huge catalyst for eating disorders and can lead

Society has made it a normality to judge people based off of their looks. Culture has been identified
as one of the etiological factors leading to the development of eating disorders. Several studies have
identified sociocultural factors within American society that are associated with the development of
eating disorders (Healthcare). Eating disorders have always been present, historical accounts suggest
that eating disorders may have existed for centuries, with wide variations in rates. According to
National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, "Genetics, environmental
factors, and personality traits all combine to create risk for an eating disorder" (1). However,
epidemiological studies have suggested that the incidence of eating disorders among adolescent has
increased over the last 50 years. Media has shown to have more of an impact with eating disorders
in today's culture compared to past societies (Geary). An experiment was preformed showing how
changes in the body weight and shape of Playboy centerfolds over the past two decades. According

Body Genre In Linda Williams's Film Bodies
A body genre is one that literally attempts to provoke affect, or a physical response as opposed to an
intellectual one, from the viewer. The repetitive formulas and spectacles of film genres are often
defined by their differences from the classical realist style of narrative cinema. In Linda Williams's,
Film Bodies: Gender, Genre, and Excess, she describes how cow these classical films have been
characterized as efficient action–centered, goal–oriented linear narratives "driven by the desire or a
single protagonist, involving one or two lines of action, and leading to definitive closure" (Williams,
3).
Williams talks about three "gross" genres that she and her son choose from when going to see a
movie. She says, "we often select from

Hollywood Body Standard
Has Hollywood's harsh view of the human body resulted in an unrealistic new body standard?
Throughout my life I have repeatedly heard everyone around me say "Change is for the better", a
generic phrase that gives false hope to something that does not have a clear answer. The truth is that
change can be both good and bad depending on the situation. Hollywood is currently in the process
of a major change as it keeps branching further and further away from what it once was. As the
popularity of movies continues to rise, the boundaries of what is possible in the movie industry are
becoming limitless. With the help of modern technology, Hollywood has turned its attention to how
well they can make a movie look, rather than the actual acting itself. ... Show more content on

Despite all of their hard work, it may be impossible for some to achieve the looks that are desired in
Hollywood due to genetics and body structure. Many stuntmen turn to illegal drugs and steroids in
order to stay afloat in their industry. Hill discusses this issue of shortcuts by saying, "So who on a
movie set would be most likely to take a risk on something unproven that could cause bodily harm?
The stuntmen, of course.... It makes some sense: If you're asked to body–double for Ryan Gosling
without the benefit of his trainer and his personal chef, you'll be tempted to take a shortcut, too."
(64). Due to the lack of resources, stuntmen turn to dangerous drugs to be more successful with their
career. If stuntmen are having troubles achieving the body standard that has been set for them,
imagine an average young adult attempting to attain the looks of someone they see in a movie. It
would be very unrealistic to try to achieve such a standard. This is because average young adults
don't have the time or the resources to attain a perfect body. However, due to the amount of control
Hollywood has today, young adults are influenced by celebrities, such as movie characters, and they
strive to be just like them. A trend in both fitness and overall health seems to be occurring currently
as young adults are trying to achieve these perfect bodies that

Media By Alex Brunstad, Body Shaming And Social Media
"Body shaming someone describes how mean the society can be to troll someone on their physical
appearance" (Jain). Body–shaming people affects their self–esteem. People think it is normal to
criticize the body of others because they are accustomed to do it every day, that sometimes they do
not even realize it. Society body shames others all the time, instead of helping them feel secure and
happy with their bodies. They want other people to look the way they want to be look at. Body
shaming is affecting people physically and mentally.
No doubt, when people express how they feel on social media about other's bodies, it can affect the
people they have on their social media. Because they can be going through the same thing as the
person they are describing. Alex Brunstad in "Body Shaming and Social Media", explains how she
feels about social media and that it actually affects her when someone talks about other people's
bodies. The author explains how she feels saying that "social media, originally a platform by which I
hoped to give and receive support from likeminded individuals, quickly became a toxic environment
for strengthening my relationship with my body". People that feel insecure about their body expect
that others would accept them on how they look and receive support on how they truly feel about
themselves. Since they already know how they look, they do not need a remainder.
Body shaming is even more difficult to people that feel insecure about their body every day. "In a
society that puts so much emphasis on body image and beauty, it is so easy to get caught up in self –
condemnation and body shaming" (Aceves). Society concentrates more on how the person looks
physically. Instead of, accepting them on how they are and concentrating on other things. For that
reason, people who feel offended thru others want to be accepted by them. They start to stop eating,
they become bulimic, anorexic or fall into depression. Just because they want to look at how society
wants them to look.
Therefore, to stop these bullies, people that are being body shamed need to stand up for themselves
and respond to the comments. For instance, if you are going to a family party and you know that
they tend to criticize your

Social media exposes users to unrealistic body types of both genders, while females are more
commonly affected. Facebook is the largest and most popular platform of social media with over 1.3
billion users worldwide, as of 2014. Even though many companies are releasing campaigns about
loving your body no matter your shape or size, social media still finds a way to create a negative
impact on society about body image. The human race has always had a body standard, which is
often unrealistic for most women. The social standard for women in the 2000's is to be tall, yet

During the colonial times, thicker women were preferred over rail–thin women. Thick women were
seen to be able to birth many children and were sturdy to work. Curvy women also reflected a
woman's wealth and health. Attractive women were the ones who were well nourished, strong, and
able to help out around the farm. In the beginning of the 20th century, women began to look boyish,
thin and less feminine. They did not wear dresses or corsets, but favoured pants because they were
more suitable for working. In the time of the Second World War, the ideal women changed again.
Women were to be strong yet feminine, and began to have curves like Marylin Munroe. During the
1960's, women switched back to the boyish, twiggy look. Most often, it was hard for women to keep
up with the constantly changing expectations. Often, women "with money and higher
socioeconomic status were far more likely to be able to conform to these standards. Women
typically were willing to sacrifice comfort and even endure pain to achieve them." This shows that
women value their physical appearance and would go to extreme measures to look how society

October 17, 2015 Media vs. the body Image Body image remains to be a very controversial topic in
today's society, because of how easy it is to become a hate crime over a small comment on how
small or big someone's body is. Today, it is unavoidable to see the look that it seems society wants
us to look. Professor Susan Bordo writes the article, "Never Just Pictures", describing her
investigation between the media and its effects on how people view their bodies. She uses ethos,
logos, and pathos to bring in the attention of the people, in order to get her message across to be
aware of media and how they portray the ideal body image. Bordo notes the patterns of the different
types of models that magazines and commercial ads use, to say that even though they have changed
the face of beauty, they never really changed the body of it. And she analyzes the affects that these
ads have on how people view their bodies, and alter what the 'ideal' body image is. Bordo uses other
sources to prove her argument mainly allowing readers to have more reasons to side with her
argument. Having reviewed this article, I think that we should publish this article in the Shorthorns,
because it will attract the attention of most people, since right now young people still struggle with
differentiating between what is a real body and what is a body that has been altered for the likes of
what the media likes. Bordo's main claim to the article is that media is

Body Image And Body Images
For many years, people have been debated about dancers' perceptions, thoughts and feelings of body
image. Many people think a dancer's personal vision of their body image is an important part of
their psychological health and well–being and can help or hinder their dance performance.
But what is body image? Body image is both perceptual (what we see) and affective (how we feel
about what we see) (Rudd & Carter, 2006). Cash, (2004) referred body image to the multifaceted
psychological experience of embodiment, especially one's physical appearance and encompasses
one's body–related self–perceptions and self–attitudes, including thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and
behaviors. Body image has also been defined as the collection of beliefs and attitudes individuals
have concerning their appearance (Eklund & Masberg, 2014). Body image relates to a person's
perceptions, feelings and thoughts about his or her body, and is usually conceptualized as
incorporating body size estimation, evaluation of body attractiveness and emotions associated with
body shape and size (Grogan, 2006).
Ravaldi et al., (2003) also defined body image as a picture we have in our minds of the size, shape
and form of our bodies and body parts. Body image and the believes, attitudes, and values we
acquire throughout our lives can be attributed to social factors that support how we think we should
think, look, and act (Heiland, Murray, & Edley, 2008). Also, the attitude towards the body image is

The Perfect Body
Lock, M. and V. K. Nguyen 2010. 'The Normal Body' in An Anthropology of Biomedicine, UK:
Wiley–Blackwell, pp 32–56. Example 1: 'normal' embodiment of the body or "The Perfect Body":
The 2014 underwear campaign "The Perfect Body" launched by Victoria's Secret demonstrates the
comercially marketable idea of a 'normal' body. The knowledge produced about the idea in this case
of the 'normal' body is a standarization female of ideals within modern society. This image is a
representation of the embodiment by society of what an ideal female should look like and is
reflected into this Victoria's Secret advertisement campaign. Drawing on Lock and Nguyen's (2010)
discussion on the natural body this advertisement presents a powerful example of how an ideal
persists as the body is objectified to conform to a societal ideal in social representations. It also
suggests tht the body is a "homogenious space" , women are classified and objectified and placed in
a category and this is what the 'perfect body' looks like. The advertisement campaign solidifies that
ideal with the slogan "The Perfect Body" and does not demonstrate a "truthful depiction of ... Show

Once again the normalisation and idea of standardisation put forward by Lock and Nguyeon (2010)
contributes to the embodiment of usage. By constantly exposing the population to an action or

violent images are used in everyday media the population becomes more accepting. (p32–33, 37–

Negative Effects Of Body Image
With today's social media, the young generation sees an array of images that portray the ideal body.
Most of the pictures seen belong to young female models advertising beauty products. They are
presumed to have perfect and idyllic appearances (Cash, 2004). Young girls often feel the pressure
to attain this illusion which is mostly unachievable. Failure to achieve this height of beauty leads to
low self–esteem and low self–evaluation issues. The subject of body image among adolescents has
become a problem as they are always in pursuit of the high social standards of attractiveness that are
practically impossible. The teenagers in high schools are the ones who face this problem a lot.

A bog body is a human cadaver that has been naturally mummified in a peat bog. Bog people are
both geographically and chronologically widespread, they have been dated back to between 8,000

Bog bodies have kept their skin and internal organs due to the specific conditions of the surrounding
area. These conditions include highly acidic waters, low temperatures, and a lack of oxygen. These
conditions will affect the skin of the body, causing it to tan. The oldest known body is the skeleton
of Koelbjerg Woman from Demark. This body was dated back to 8,000 BCE, which is during the

equal to seven hours every week. Unfortunately, only one in three children are physically active

people, aged six and older are not physically active at all ("Facts and Statistics"). On the other hand,
the World Health Organization and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend
that for good health, adults should get the equivalent of two and a half hours of moderate to

five percent of adults participate in thirty minutes of physical activity every day ("Facts and

recent years. Another contributing factor that causes weight gain and obesity is television watching.
Children who have televisions in their bedrooms are more likely to gain excess weight than children

Body Shaming : The Body Image Of The Body
You do not care about random strangers or acquaintances health. If you did, you would remind them
to go to the doctor or to take their vitamin every day. You cannot always tell somebody's health just
by looking at them. Even if someone is clearly overweight, they could have a condition. If someone
is skinny, they could still have a condition as well. Our society thinks that we must be just one body
type. If you are overweight, people automatically think that you do not take care of yourself. When
you are skinny, you are told you never eat. No matter what size we are, weather we can control it or
not, society will continue to body shame women. Two company's ads, that were posted across the
united states, were victims of body shaming. Victoria Secret's and Dove both subvert the body
image of women and what "type" of body you should have. Growing up as a small child, what you
look like is not always on your mind. As you grow older you start to pay attention to your weight
and start to compare yourself to other body types. In Victoria's Secret's ad, that features the 2014
Angels in bras and underwear, takes body shaming to a different level. The ad was designed to
promote a new push–up bra called "Body," highlighted a set of models using the slogan "The Perfect

The Perfect Body Article Analysis
The informative mentor text this week was on The "Perfect" Body. A short article on the media
projecting what their ideas of the perfect body are. Tall and skinny women and bulked up men. You
see these kind of people in magazines, on television and even on video games. I believe the purpose
of the article was to help people realize that many people have things they don't like about their own
bodies and in fact, two out of every five girls and one out of every five boys are uncomfortable with
their bodies. This is stated at the end of the article. I believe the author succeeds in identifying the
objective since the entire article is on the dangers of low self esteem and feeling like you need to be
thin to be pretty. The author mentions anorexia and bulimia as some of the diseases from trying to

unhealthy negative body image is. Having low self esteem and feeling like you're not thin enough is
also dangerous. The picture shows a thin woman looking at herself in the mirror and instead of her

The Role Of Christ 's Body And The Relics Of Bodies Essay
Bodies, living and dead, play an immense role in Christianity. The body and the relics of bodies are
actually able to become places where one can have direct contact with God, but only if there are
sanctified (Nachaj, Lecture 12). There are many examples of ways to sanctification including but
not limited to, celibacy, poverty, martyrdom, preaching and spreading the gospel, leading
communities through teachings, and performing miracles (Nachaj, Lecture 12). Many of these
important practices and ways of living are discussed in the following paper including the importance
of Jesus Christ (in his living and dead form), martyrs such an Julian of Norwich, shrines, relics, and
monks and nuns. In most cases provided, it is explained how to body is a sin–like possession that
Christians are constantly trying to strive away from but this is proved wrong through way of looking

By far, one of the most prominent bodies to playa role in Christian teaching and practice would be
that of Jesus the Christ's body; in physical and spiritual form. Jesus was seen as being both human,
in the flesh, and God, in the spirit (Nachaj, Lecture 12). For Christians, Jesus is seen in direct
relation of God as either sharing a father–son relationship with him, or as actually being the bodied
version of God himself. Christianity's "central doctrines–the incarnation, the crucifixion, the

Body Modifications: Tattoos and Body Piercings Essay
How far is too far when it comes to body modifications, such as tattooing and body piercing. Until
those who tattoo and pierce to excess, realize the stigma they are placing on the art, the United
States government should regulate where and to what degree tattoo artists can legally tattoo or
pierce. To answer the question of why people tattoo, one would have to look back to how the early
civilization made a living and their opinions on the world around them. Prehistoric people may have
been the first to mark the human body for practical purposes. Tens of thousands of years ago mineral
pigments were used to preserve the bodies of humans and animal skins, while also neutralizing the

City officials began to restrict or ban tattooing because of concerns about health issues. An outbreak

In Africa, body modification is a sign of prosperity, wealth, power, and is a method of showing a
person's life story. The art form has existed for centuries and holds massive amounts of cultural
significance for African tribes. The village of Umuofia in Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart
is no exception. The Igbo utilize tattooing as a manner of reflecting the character and life
experiences of a person in a form visible to the people around them. In the novel, Okonkwo was the
epitome of manliness because of his athletic prowess and his position of power within the clan,
emphasized on page 26 of Achebe's work, " "He was talking about Okonkwo, who had risen so

steadfastness in his decision and reconciliation with the gods. Consequently, combining the physical
representations of the demonstrated traits is what creates a tattoo revealing the Igbos attachment to
customs. Additionally, a tattoo also representing religion made with the symbols for guardianship,
the presence of gods, and trust is poignant when remembering the people of Mbanta's first reaction
to European missionaries. "These men must be mad, they said to themselves. How else could they
say that Ani and Amadiora were harmless" (Achebe 146)? Even in the face of change, the Igbo held
on to their religion and kept faith in their gods. Similarly, when the stories of Europeans were being

page 140 of Things Fall Apart, "'Never kill a man who says nothing. Those men of Abame were

Women Body Image

  • 1. Women Body Image In a video that models made to reveal their body image insecurities on camera to Megan Friedman, creator of the D.EFECT add, is impacting to the media. The women describe the things that they hate about their body, including what they have been called or told by other people due to their flaws. The models start by describing how they dislike their shoulder, smile, height, nose, teeth gap, eyes, birthmarks, and body formation and at the end of the video it tells us to take note that we are all beautiful. This problem is not only found in one model, but in a large portion of the population. Models are not born perfect, some have eating disorders, get plastic surgeries, and get picked on because of what society has made people think women and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Society makes us, men and women, think that in order to be loved then we have to have a flat belly or be incredibly fit. However, there are a handful of people who struggle to get there through dieting that decide to take the easy way out by becoming anorexic. Being anorexic is a serious condition that affects your mental being and can eventually kill you. "Thoughts about dieting, food, and your body may take up most of your day–leaving little time for friends, family, and other activities you used to enjoy. Life becomes a relentless pursuit of thinness and going to extremes to lose weight. But no matter how skinny you become, it's never enough" (www.helpguide.org). To be beautiful being skinny shouldn't be the way to get there, being fit and healthy should be. There are other alternative diets that can be useful to our body's image and can help up not only mentally but also physically. In order to be beautiful people do not need to go through any kind of eating disorder due to what society has said or done to make it seem right. Society is corrupting young men and women to be more of what celebrities aren't; they are giving us false hope. They should be taking pics of celebrities exercising and eating right instead of them walking out the hospital from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Body Esteem : The Causes Of Poor Body Image The Causes of Poor Body Image Positive or negative body image can highly affect one's self–esteem. High self–esteem is important because "[self–esteem] can be viewed as a key indicator of psychological well–being" (Clay, 2005). Cognitive health can be just as vital as physical health. However, a study found a profound drop in teenage girls' self–esteem (Clay, 2005). Young girls' mental health is being affected by their poor body image. While lack of education, weight loss advertisements, and celebrities portrayal of healthy lifestyles are often underlying causes for girls' poor body image, digital editing and media overrepresentation of underweight women are the biggest culprit. Many teenage girls are unaware of healthy body proportions because schools fail to educate girls on body positivity. Adolescent girls are coming to a point in their lives where they encounter bodily changes from puberty. Changes, like acne and weight gain, create a gap between developing girls and society's female beauty standard (Clay, 2005). Most teenage girls are comparing themselves to older women who have outgrown the awkward teenage years. In schools, there is no requirement to discuss body mass charts in class (Health Education, 2017). This creates a problem with healthy body images. In a study, young girls stated their ideal body size would be five feet seven inches, one hundred pounds and size five (Clay, 2005). However, at that height the girls would be severely anorexic. The healthy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Body Positivity Google body positivity. Your screen will be flooded with pictures of women of many colors, sizes, and ages. Scroll through these pictures, and you will notice that males are hugely under–represented within the context this trend. Body positivity in modern mainstream culture often focuses on the sexualization of women and glosses over the negative message to which men are exposed. This cultural desire to be muscular, "shredded," and "ripped" has led to a rise in body dysmorphia in men, which can have severe consequences on the development and growth of boys both mentally and physically. The media often encourages all body shapes in women, however, larger men are objects of comedy, and frail men are epitomes of a "nerd" or "geek". Just like women, many men struggle with body dysmorphia, but do not speak of it because societal norms encourage them to suppress their feelings. Body dysmorphia develops at a young age. Boys grow up idolizing star athletes and typical "alpha" males. Seeing massive 6–foot–tall men with over 200lbs of muscle, they begin to desire and imitate these physiques. Even on television, men are often shirtless to show off their chiseled pecs and their six–pack abs. Children growing up with these images believe that this is the ideal man and the body they should have. While little girls had the ideal "Barbie" body, a 2002 study called "Men and Masculinities" reveals how children's toys in the 1990s exceeded "the muscularity of even the largest human ... Shocking Bodies Documentary Bodies Online Video Essay The documentary, Shocking Bodies Exhibition, was published in 2014, which mainly discusses a plasticized Body Worlds museum that the public can attend at any time and then further discusses ethical concerns. This documentary was brought about because 20/20 wanted to investigate more into the plasticized bodies' origins. They were curious where the bodies were coming from and if they were the bodies of executed prisoners. Throughout this paper, two ethical issues, a theoretical view point, and why I support these exhibits will be further discussed Two Ethical Issues & Theoretical View Point One ethical issue that stands with the Body Worlds museum is the fact that people are not one hundred percent sure who these bodies belong to or where these bodies are exactly coming from, which also includes the manager who originally obtained these bodies for the museum. One man from China that worked for this Chinese Dalian medical University, that refused to reveal his identity, told 20/20 that he picked up bodies on the streets at night and then sold them for two hundred dollars each to the United States. • 14. Persuasive Essay On Donate Your Body Donating your body to science can really make a big difference in the medical education. Some people value their education just by donating themselves to the doctors, researchers and others. I think that by doing that can really help other people that need anything from the body like an organ. People even donate it to medicine to see if a treatment may work on it to test it out on other people that are really sick. I believe that people should donate their bodies because it can make a difference in the world. At the same time, it can be a bad thing because you do not have a saying in where your body is going to go or in what branch of science your body will land, of course those programs will cremate your body or just return you once they finish with using you and make a funeral without paying a single dime but who would want that? Those are the small things on why people choose not to do it. Some people ask themselves, should I donate my body to science, I say, why not? The human race often wonders about their options to place one's cadaver. In some religious beliefs and traditions, this question is already answered for them. Others without a biblical fall back think, what even happens to the condition of my body when I die? They would start to assess things and look over their options. People have many sources and ways of finding out how to plan for his or her death. Talking to an advocate for donating your body to science would inform the person all the benefits to ... • 16. The Body Shop Introduction There is success in body care. Behold the Body Shop, one of the famous international cosmetics brand. It is not just one's ordinary shop for body or hair care. It is extraordinary just as its pioneer. The entrepreneur assessed in this paper is in no way or another connected to me. Personal Profile The name behind the Body Shop, a famous cosmetic line for decades now, is Anita Roddick. On October 23, 1942 in Littlehampton, Sussex, England marks her birth to an immigrant Italian family. After completing her degree at the Newton Park College of education, she worked as a part–time teacher and for the United Nations in Geneva. She traveled to different places like Tahiti, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She risked selling alternative body care products. Nevertheless, she dealt with it with optimism. In order to face success, it is of crucial importance to think of the ways by which the business model will thrive in the marketplace. Another is to assess the strengths and opportunities of the business. Lastly, it is always important to innovate, as this has always described entrepreneurs (Baghai, Coley, and White, 2000). Innovations are proven to increase the business' performance. During Christmas last year, upon launching a new product, i.e. a strong Christmas gift range, and improving customer services, operating profits from the division boosted to 17% to ₤11.7 million (Geary, 2005). This is a recent event in the innovation strategies of Body Shop. Schumpeter (1939), as cited in Mintrom, Schneider and Teske (1995), asserts that an entrepreneur functions to innovate, which means devising new production function out of the existing factors of production. In simpler terms, an entrepreneur is one who introduces a new product or a product that deviates from the ordinary. Such is the basic idea or definition of an entrepreneur from which its modern definitions have developed. Apart from the above, there is something about the packaging of the Body Shop products. Body Modifications: The Deliberate Altering Of The Human Body "Body modification (or body alteration) is the deliberate altering of the human anatomy or human physical appearance." –Wikipedia Body modifications have been practiced by humans for thousands of years. It's a common practice in modern society, mainly to make one's body conform to societal or personal ideals of beauty. There are other motives as well, such as health reasons, religious beliefs, shock value, and to display affiliation or membership to a group. The safest material for body piercings is titanium, as people have a high percentage of allergies and sensitivity to other metals. The piercing material isn't the only thing to look out for, though. On most piercing jewelry, there is a screw at the end of the post that allows the wearer to screw a ball or other ornament on the end of it. The problem with this is, when inserting the post, this sharp screw is forced to go through the piercing hole. This can create tiny tears inside the piercing, and can cause inflammation or infection. I currently only know of one piercer on Long Island who is a member of the Association of Professional Piercers. He uses high quality materials and is very knowledgeable. • 20. Bog Bodies This book informs the reader about bog bodies and how crucial they are to scientists because they're a journey to the past. Bog bodies are bodies that were deposited in a bog shortly after death, they were then naturally preserved in the bog. To clarify why they're so important, bog bodies are usually so well preserved that their skin, intestines and other parts of their body remain. Scientists study them and they are able to find when they died, using radiocarbon analysis, and how they died which is only possible it's not a skeleton because certain wounds can only be seen on skin and not on bones. There was a section in that text that impacted me, it was: "With new tests and procedure, with determination and perhaps some luck, scientists may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientists look at only a few apparatus to discover additional information about the past, they analyze fossils, artifacts, preserved bodies, and ancient architecture. With bog bodies gone, that leaves a miniscule amount of items to study. Artifacts or items belonging to ancient people don't provide tremendous amounts of information. Additionally, fossils belong to a whole other category, animals and plants from prehistoric times. Consequently, this doesn't provide information about primitive culture and don't assist scientists seeking data on primeval civilization. Furthermore, bog bodies are probably the most complex sources of enlightenment because they can provide clothing, weapons, and materials of specific eras, as well as informing us about their actions. For instance, of scientists suspected the person was sacrificed we can conclude that whatever civilization they were from practiced human sacrifice. In all honesty, bog bodies would be a grand loss because they're far more intriguing than other artifacts. Considering this, bog bodies supply insight about someone's life and it simulates reading an autobiography because you find out multitudes of information about the person, even if they're dead. Another bog body they studied was the Yde Girl, she was found in 1987 in the Netherlands but she had died 2,000 years earlier. While they were studying her remains, they found at she had scoliosis, which impairs how you walk because it's a mild spinal curvature. The toes of her right foot also signified that she might've been slightly pigeon toed. Scientists also noticed that she was stabbed and strangled with her on belt, which was left on her neck after death. Perhaps she was considered undesirable in her society because of her "flaws" and killed because of this. However, there are several other ways she could've died, it could've been a sacrificial ... • 22. Body Image Of Women Body image pertains to judgement about themselves or about their body perspective. But, what do you expect when the media is covered in pictures of "perfect" models and celebrities? Women's self–esteem is lowering because they look at these women in comparison to themselves and they do not like the difference between the two, which leads them to belief that they need to change themselves. The media has gotten way out of hand with body image, and not in a good way. Magazines can also photoshop and edit pictures to make people look better than they actually look. They can change what their hair looks like, what their eyes look like, and their teeth too. They can change heir body shape to make their body figure look better. Women do not realize that people can change a picture pretty fast and make them look like someone different. They can edit their photos but they cant always change what their make up and hair color and everything else looks like because all of the good apps cost a lot of money and require brains and style to be able to function the app. Women want to be compared to women in a model status and one day wish they could look like them but if someone as myself could learn how to photoshop pictures then I would show women that I could change them as fast as other people can change those models that they look up too. • 24. Analysis Of The Body By Stephen King In the short story, The Body, written by Stephen King, various life lessons are evident in the adventure the four main characters have. The life lessons chosen by the author are reflective of life lessons that could be learned by the reader, and life lessons that are not always vocalized. In Stephen King's The Body, the group of young boys learn many different life lessons including family not always being trustworthy, some things should be kept to yourself, and that friends, even best friends, can split up. The main characters all have unique, yet abusive, relationships with their families. As said in the introductory paragraph, this choice made by Stephen King was incredibly important and wise to make because especially in the sixties, which is when the story takes place, it was a common occurrence that was often overlooked. One of the most evident life lessons in the story was that relatives should not get a free pass to hurt each other. The character Teddy's relationship with his father was overlooked, exclusively by Teddy himself, "Teddy's dad took Teddy over to the big woodstove at the back of the kitchen and shoved the side of Teddy's head down against one of the cast–iron burner plates". Teddy had a lot of respect for the father for the soul reason that he is his father. If it was not for the fact that Teddy's father messed him up physically and mentally for life, Teddy would treat the person with a lot less respect and nobility. Despite that his father only ... Actors, models, and celebrities who are seen in magazines, television, and/or social media demonstrate the physical characteristics of the widely desired ideal–image; which includes of being a female who is tall, slender, and blemish–free or a male who is tall, masculine, and smooth– skinned. Because the media constantly presents models and actresses with an unachievable body image it influences both feminine and masculine genders in believing what is considered to be the perfect ideal image in today's society. There are more than one third of women who want to have the appearance of a female model; unfortunately, there are also as much men who want to appear like the muscular male models that are presented in the mass media. I had a great time with my group, and had a great time doing and testing out labs, thinking deeper in science. • 30. The Human Body And The Body Besides learning science, I always wanted to learn more about how our bodies functioned. As a child, my innate curiosity was fed by reading books that explained the mysteries of the human body such as why we sneeze, or why our hairs stand when we are cold. As I learned more about the human body in college through courses on molecular biology and nutrition, my passion for applying science to health and the body grew. However, I still do not feel as though I have learned enough even after four years of studying biochemistry. I looked for other ways to enrich my knowledge of how the body works by enrolling in online courses such as medicinal chemistry, medicine in the digital age, and musculoskeletal cases in anatomy. As I learned more about medicine and the human body, I became more eager to use that knowledge to comfort others through medicine. After hearing of negative healthcare experiences and experiencing health issues such as severe dysmenorrhea, the desire to help others feel at ease grew as well. Experiencing severe dysmenorrhea as a teenager was debilitating. Once a month, I was crippled by painful cramps. I was unable to take pain relieving medicine until after I vomited from pain and nausea. By that time, my body was so exhausted that I fell into a deep sleep once I closed my eyes. Every month, I wondered why I experienced it and how I could stop it. To this day, no one knows for sure why such an event occurs but I have taken it upon myself to find some answers. ... • 32. The Human Body in Art In my understanding and opinion, the body in art was the starting point for any king of art form. As some people have said, art may have actually started with the body, such as the decoration of the body shown for example in Zulu when they used to paint their faces with natural colours in order for them to create camouflage and catch and kill their prey. In many ways, art is for the human experience and the experience of being here, the presence, which is shaped with the representation of the human figure. A body can convey class, age, gender and sexuality. The 'Bamana Twin Figures' (Mali, 20th Century – Figure 1) is the representation of the Man and the Woman, a very powerful expression of male and female. Even though both their faces are exactly the same, the parts of the body can reveal the discrimination: genitalia, breasts and even hair. The reason why Egyptian art has not changed and looks very similar since 1479 – 1425 BCE up until now is very intentional; they are trying to maintain their cultural tradition in which argues for stability. The Egyptian pharaoh "Akhenaten' (Figure 2) is unusual compared to other Egyptian figures, such as the traditional King, which has broad shoulders and muscular body. 'Akhenaten' is a lot softer and that encouraged people to think and believe that the body was portrayed in such way because of some sort of illness or disease, but Egyptian art was all about the concept and not the reality, it was just the idea of how it used ... • 34. Body Image Pressure Today, a large majority of women will admit to being dissatisfied with the way their body looks. This is because of a thing called body image. Body image is the way one thinks their body should look, and how they think others see it. This has become a major issue essentially because of the media. The mainstream media has an impact on body image because they exploit women with what most individuals would consider the perfect body, usually for advertising purposes. Since the media has a tendency to only show women with one specific body type, this makes other women feel pressured to look that way. Negative thoughts about one's body can be found in girls as early as six years old. Even girls at this young of an age have reportedly wanted to look "sexy." For many adolescent girls, they have always been exposed to the media. It is a part of their lifestyle. Ultimately, what they see through the media, is what they believe to be true. When they see the media promoting the perfect body, they truly believe that is how their body is supposed to look. Since young people spend more time on social media, they are more inclined to seeing images of the ideal body every single day. Through social media, teen girls get attention, or praised on their appearances through likes and comments. "27 percent feel stressed out about how they look when they post pictures. 22 percent feel badly about themselves when nobody comments on or "likes" the photos they post" (Naylor). The worst possible outcome due to body image dissatisfaction in adolescent girls is for one to develop an eating disorder. Anorexia is an eating disorder in which one will starve themselves in order to lose weight, or not gain any. Bulimia, is an eating disorder where one will binge eat, and then purge everything they have ate. One more eating disorder that many people don't recognize as one, because honestly it doesn't make sense is binge eating in which one will eat large amounts of food and won't be able to stop themselves. All of which can be very life threatening. "In the United States, the discrepancy between the extraordinarily thin body type promoted in the media and the reality of average women's bodies has been implicated in the steady rise of eating disorders, especially among adolescents. Experts believe that today, more than ten million women and girls suffer from anorexia, bulimia, or related illnesses, with the onset of such problems occurring in patients of younger and younger ages" (Balarro and Wagner). Throughout my life I have repeatedly heard everyone around me say "Change is for the better", a generic phrase that gives false hope to something that does not have a clear answer. The truth is that change can be both good and bad depending on the situation. Hollywood is currently in the process of a major change as it keeps branching further and further away from what it once was. As the popularity of movies continues to rise, the boundaries of what is possible in the movie industry are becoming limitless. It makes some sense: If you're asked to body–double for Ryan Gosling without the benefit of his trainer and his personal chef, you'll be tempted to take a shortcut, too." (64). If stuntmen are having troubles achieving the body standard that has been set for them, imagine an average young adult attempting to attain the looks of someone they see in a movie. • 48. Media By Alex Brunstad, Body Shaming And Social Media "Body shaming someone describes how mean the society can be to troll someone on their physical appearance" (Jain). Body–shaming people affects their self–esteem. People think it is normal to criticize the body of others because they are accustomed to do it every day, that sometimes they do not even realize it. Society body shames others all the time, instead of helping them feel secure and happy with their bodies. They want other people to look the way they want to be look at. Body shaming is affecting people physically and mentally. No doubt, when people express how they feel on social media about other's bodies, it can affect the people they have on their social media. Because they can be going through the same thing as the person they are describing. Alex Brunstad in "Body Shaming and Social Media", explains how she feels about social media and that it actually affects her when someone talks about other people's bodies. The author explains how she feels saying that "social media, originally a platform by which I hoped to give and receive support from likeminded individuals, quickly became a toxic environment for strengthening my relationship with my body". People that feel insecure about their body expect that others would accept them on how they look and receive support on how they truly feel about themselves. Since they already know how they look, they do not need a remainder. Body shaming is even more difficult to people that feel insecure about their body every day. "In a society that puts so much emphasis on body image and beauty, it is so easy to get caught up in self – condemnation and body shaming" (Aceves). Society concentrates more on how the person looks physically. Instead of, accepting them on how they are and concentrating on other things. For that reason, people who feel offended thru others want to be accepted by them. They start to stop eating, they become bulimic, anorexic or fall into depression. Just because they want to look at how society wants them to look. Therefore, to stop these bullies, people that are being body shamed need to stand up for themselves and respond to the comments. In the beginning of the 20th century, women began to look boyish, thin and less feminine. They did not wear dresses or corsets, but favoured pants because they were more suitable for working. Body Image Jade Liu Tesdal English 1301– 029 October 17, 2015 Media vs. the body Image Body image remains to be a very controversial topic in today's society, because of how easy it is to become a hate crime over a small comment on how small or big someone's body is. Today, it is unavoidable to see the look that it seems society wants us to look. Professor Susan Bordo writes the article, "Never Just Pictures", describing her investigation between the media and its effects on how people view their bodies. She uses ethos, logos, and pathos to bring in the attention of the people, in order to get her message across to be aware of media and how they portray the ideal body image. Bordo notes the patterns of the different types of models that magazines and commercial ads use, to say that even though they have changed the face of beauty, they never really changed the body of it. And she analyzes the affects that these ads have on how people view their bodies, and alter what the 'ideal' body image is. Bordo uses other sources to prove her argument mainly allowing readers to have more reasons to side with her argument. Having reviewed this article, I think that we should publish this article in the Shorthorns, because it will attract the attention of most people, since right now young people still struggle with differentiating between what is a real body and what is a body that has been altered for the likes of what the media likes. • 54. Body Image And Body Images For many years, people have been debated about dancers' perceptions, thoughts and feelings of body image. Many people think a dancer's personal vision of their body image is an important part of their psychological health and well–being and can help or hinder their dance performance. But what is body image? Body image is both perceptual (what we see) and affective (how we feel about what we see) (Rudd & Carter, 2006). Cash, (2004) referred body image to the multifaceted psychological experience of embodiment, especially one's physical appearance and encompasses one's body–related self–perceptions and self–attitudes, including thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors. Body image has also been defined as the collection of beliefs and attitudes individuals have concerning their appearance (Eklund & Masberg, 2014). Body image relates to a person's perceptions, feelings and thoughts about his or her body, and is usually conceptualized as incorporating body size estimation, evaluation of body attractiveness and emotions associated with body shape and size (Grogan, 2006). Ravaldi et al., (2003) also defined body image as a picture we have in our minds of the size, shape and form of our bodies and body parts. Body image and the believes, attitudes, and values we acquire throughout our lives can be attributed to social factors that support how we think we should think, look, and act (Heiland, Murray, & Edley, 2008). This image is a representation of the embodiment by society of what an ideal female should look like and is reflected into this Victoria's Secret advertisement campaign. Drawing on Lock and Nguyen's (2010) discussion on the natural body this advertisement presents a powerful example of how an ideal persists as the body is objectified to conform to a societal ideal in social representations. It also suggests tht the body is a "homogenious space" , women are classified and objectified and placed in a category and this is what the 'perfect body' looks like. The body and the relics of bodies are actually able to become places where one can have direct contact with God, but only if there are sanctified (Nachaj, Lecture 12). There are many examples of ways to sanctification including but not limited to, celibacy, poverty, martyrdom, preaching and spreading the gospel, leading communities through teachings, and performing miracles (Nachaj, Lecture 12). Many of these important practices and ways of living are discussed in the following paper including the importance of Jesus Christ (in his living and dead form), martyrs such an Julian of Norwich, shrines, relics, and monks and nuns. In most cases provided, it is explained how to body is a sin–like possession that Christians are constantly trying to strive away from but this is proved wrong through way of looking at God's creations. By far, one of the most prominent bodies to playa role in Christian teaching and practice would be that of Jesus the Christ's body; in physical and spiritual form. Jesus was seen as being both human, in the flesh, and God, in the spirit (Nachaj, Lecture 12). For Christians, Jesus is seen in direct relation of God as either sharing a father–son relationship with him, or as actually being the bodied version of God himself. Christianity's "central doctrines–the incarnation, the crucifixion, the resurrection–and its essential rituals–baptism and communion–are all theological assertions in ... • 72. Body Modifications: Tattoos and Body Piercings Essay How far is too far when it comes to body modifications, such as tattooing and body piercing. Until those who tattoo and pierce to excess, realize the stigma they are placing on the art, the United States government should regulate where and to what degree tattoo artists can legally tattoo or pierce. To answer the question of why people tattoo, one would have to look back to how the early civilization made a living and their opinions on the world around them. Prehistoric people may have been the first to mark the human body for practical purposes. Tens of thousands of years ago mineral pigments were used to preserve the bodies of humans and animal skins, while also neutralizing the odor of decay. Paul G. Bahn, an archaeologist and ... Samuel Steward from Chicago said: The floor was a filthy mess of mud, sawdust, dried spittle, torn newspapers, and wine bottles here and there. The flash on the walls had a primitive look. The machines were powered by an old–current generator...the needles were filthy with such a gummy coating of old dried ink splatters and grease that you were afraid to touch them. (Body Marks 4) City officials began to restrict or ban tattooing because of concerns about health issues. An outbreak of hepatitis during the 1950s was allegedly connected to Coney Island tattoo artists, who were suspected of working under unsanitary conditions. There are few regulations when it comes to tattoos and body piercings but there are many risks. The tattoo parlor must be clean by the state regulations. When it comes to a tattoo, the skin must first be prepared. An artist will shave the area when necessary, wipe alcohol over the surface of the skin, rub a solvent on the skin, then place the design in the proper place. This is allowed to dry for a few seconds, Vaseline or Vitamin A and D ointment is applied tot he area. The alcohol obviously disinfects the skin, but the Vitamin A and D ointment or Vaseline serves as a dual purpose of preventing drag as the needle tube moves over the ... • 78. Igbo Body In Africa, body modification is a sign of prosperity, wealth, power, and is a method of showing a person's life story. The art form has existed for centuries and holds massive amounts of cultural significance for African tribes. The village of Umuofia in Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart is no exception. The Igbo utilize tattooing as a manner of reflecting the character and life experiences of a person in a form visible to the people around them. In the novel, Okonkwo was the epitome of manliness because of his athletic prowess and his position of power within the clan, emphasized on page 26 of Achebe's work, " "He was talking about Okonkwo, who had risen so suddenly from great poverty and misfortune to be one of the lords of the clan". ... Okonkwo, a leader of the village, left in exile after offending the earth goddess, shown on page 124 of Achebe's novel, "The only course open to Okonkwo was to flee from the clan. It was a crime against the earth goddess to kill a clansman...". He was at risk of mortality, but hoped for steadfastness in his decision and reconciliation with the gods. Consequently, combining the physical representations of the demonstrated traits is what creates a tattoo revealing the Igbos attachment to customs. Additionally, a tattoo also representing religion made with the symbols for guardianship, the presence of gods, and trust is poignant when remembering the people of Mbanta's first reaction to European missionaries. "These men must be mad, they said to themselves. How else could they say that Ani and Amadiora were harmless" (Achebe 146)? Even in the face of change, the Igbo held on to their religion and kept faith in their gods. Similarly, when the stories of Europeans were being passed from village to village, relations with them were rare, wary and considered foolish, shown on page 140 of Things Fall Apart, "'Never kill a man who says nothing. Those men of Abame were fools'". Later however, Okonkwo experienced jealousy of the complete control the Europeans had over his old village. A tattoo combining jealousy, relations, and wariness accurately depicts the reaction of the Igbo to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
