“IT MAY BE LEFT ABANDON, BUT THE
ARCHITECTURAL AND HISTORICAL VALUE STAYS “
THE LAYOUT
Each floor is repetitive and follow the
same layout. The columns are alligned
to the same grid. For security
purposes, the doors were laid out in
a way that the upper floors can be
accessed from and exterior door and
some spaces are interconnected.
KEY PLAN
1. China Street 2. Beach Street 3. Weld Quay 4. Wisma Kastam
5. Pengkalan Raja Uda Ferry Terminal 6. Clan Jetties
Wisma Yeap Chor Ee is situated in
Jalan Weld Quay, Penang. The location
is strategic as it is near China Steet,
Beach Street, Ferry Terminal,
Wisma Kastam and Clan jetties.
BACKGROUND
These are important as it helped in
figuring out how and why is the building
been constructed with such design,
structure,ornamentation and etc.
China street was originally linked to the
shore; and goods would be unloaded
and bought on shore via ghauts.
Ghaut is a Hindi and Benghali word,
dedicated steps heading down to a
body of water.
CHINA STREET
The street layout was regarded good
for Fengshui where the Kuan Yin
Temple enjoyed a direct view of the sea.
Thus, they named the street as
China Street Ghaut
Used to be the centre of trade with of-
fices, banks and godowns. Ban Hin Lee
bank started by Yeap Chor Ee in 1935
is also located there.
BEACH STREET
Now, this street always packed on
Sundays with communal activities via a
program called
‘Project Occupy Beach Street’
This street was named after Sir
Frederick Aloysius Weld, British
Governor. Last time,there were dozens
of jetties, wharves and
piers landedhere.
WELD QUAY
The location was quite advantageous
as it was closely located to the
authorities, banks and
Swettenham Pier.
Wisma Kastam is located in China
Street Ghaut and it is opposite of
Wisma Yeap Chor Ee. It was formerly
known as the Malayan Railway Building.
WISMA KASTAM
It blends art deco and classical
elements with its ionic columns and
pane windows.
The ferry terminal was named after
Raja Tun Uda Al-Haj bin Raja
Muhammad, the first Governor of
Penang of the newly
independent Malaya.
FERRY TERMINAL
Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda connects the
people of Penang and Butterworth,
where Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim
is located.
This jetty was built by China Immi-
grants. As time goes by, clans were
formed that lead to fights and disputes.
CLAN JETTIES
The cluster wooden houses still home
to hundreds of people. Their lifestyles
changed gradually. Now, it is a famous
attraction in Georgetown.

Building a model of the building also is
a one way for better understanding
to all of the components from
external view into the details.

It may be the last page of our journey;
but we had learnt and gained a lot
of architectural knowledge.
