Windows, Linux and Unix Created by: Kiss Army
The Linux capabilities system was designed to help remove the problems associated with the need for root privileges. Capabilities work by breaking the actions normally reserved for root down in to smaller portions. Linux has implemented 7 of the capabilities outlined in the Posix document 1003.1e, and another 20 or so Linux specific ones. For example; CAP_CHOWN means allow for the changing of file ownership. CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE means override all DAC access restrictions. CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH means override all DAC restrictions regarding read and search. CAP_KILL means allow the sending of signals to processes belonging to others. CAP_SETGID means allow changing of the GID. CAP_SETUID means allow changing of the UID. CAP_SETPCAP means allow the transferring and removal of current set to any PID. CAP_LINUX_IMMUTABLE means allow the modification of immutable and append-only files and many more. Linux is freely available. It can be copied and distributed without fees or royalties. Even the source code for Linux is available on the Internet to anyone who wants it! Linux
There are two key capabilities that windows 7 have. Both of these allow for increased efficiency. These are power shell v2 - in a contrast to previous versions of Windows, it's already installed. It's also similar to UNIX's command line interface. It also has a 4 step process that allows commands to be executed faster-since it stacks and sorts commands. The second significant capability is Windows multi-touch. This allows for natural user interaction-a stark contrast to previous versions of windows(vista). The costs of installing the operating system start at $199 for the starter set,$259 for the home premium edition,$299 for the professional edition, and $319 for the ultimate edition. Windows 7
Both Windows and Linux come in many "flavors". All the "flavors" of Windows come from Microsoft, the various distributions of Linux come from different companies. However, both Linux and Windows come in desktop and server editions. There are many distributions of Linux, which is the possible reason that it is hurting in the marketplace and boosting sales on Windows 7. Also Windows 7 has the competitive advantage because they are "new" and "improved", as consumers would like to say they are. When looking at the aspects of each operating system; Linux is customizable in a way that Windows is not. For one, the user interface, while similar in concept, varies in detail from distribution to distribution. For example, the task bar may default to being on the top or the bottom. Also, there are many special purpose versions of Linux while Windows is very straight forward and bottom line. Linux vs. Windows 7
Linux is used by family like computers and is easily downloaded onto phones, computers, and video game consoles. Unix is also a computer operating system like Linux. Unix is seperated into two different branches within the Unix corporation, along with Linux Linux vs. Unix
