Asia has become the global leader in the Wind
Energy market representing over 203 GW of
installed capacity. As of April 2016, the total
installed capacity in Asia totalled 176,831 MW.
With increasing investment, research and
development and supporting government policies
over the past decade, Asia is poised to continue
leading the global wind energy revolution.
China’s Five-Year Plan for Energy calls for 210 GW of wind energy
output by 2020. The Chinese government is officially pursuing a
transition away from coal-based power systems towards sustainable
energy. In 2016, China installed over 23.4 GW of wind turbines, and a
it is estimated that China will have a similar output in 2017.
India set a new recorded in 2016, however the market may slow a
little as the industry and markets adapt to the new tendering system,
that is being introduced. Pakistan and the Philippines has seen a
surge in Wind Energy projects and investment. Wind in Vietnam is
poised to have a big jump, which is pending on critical regulatory
changes that should be implemented throughout 2017. Taiwan has
also been developing its offshore market.
Overall, it is expected that the Asian Wind Energy Market to add over
154 GW in the next 5 years. This should result in over 357 GW of
output by the end of 2021. Asia has seen the importance of
developing its renewable energy sources, in particular Wind. Asia will
remain at the forefront of the Global Wind Industry.

Introduction
This chapter provides an introduction to the Wind
Energy history, Wind Energy in Asia and a global
wind energy perspective.

Humans have been utilizing wind power since they have been sailing the seas,
windmills in China pumped water. Man has utilised wind to grind grain and pump
water since over two millennia. With the development of electric power, wind
power found new applications in providing lighting in areas remote from
centrally-generated power.
New ways of using the energy of the wind eventually spread around the world. By the
11th century, people in the Middle East used windmills extensively for food production.
Returning merchants and crusaders carried this idea back to Europe. The Dutch
refined the windmill and adapted it for draining lakes and marshes in the Rhine River
Delta. When settlers took this
technology to the New World in
the late 19th century, they began
using windmills to pump water for
farms and ranches and later to
generate electricity for homes and
industry.

4. During WW2, a 1.25-megawatt turbine
was designed and developed
5. Oil shortages in the 1970’s reignited the
interest in alternative energy
6. Europe’s wind energy industry has grown

7. Since 2014, over 240,000 commercial wind

Global Perspective
Wind power was the leading source of new power generating capacity in Europe and
the United States in 2015, and the second largest in China. Globally, a record 63 GW
was added for a total of about 433 GW. Non-OECD countries were responsible for the
majority of installations, led by China, and new markets emerged across Africa, Asia
and Latin America. Corporations and other private entities continued turning to wind
energy for reliable and low-cost power, while many large investors were drawn by its
stable returns.
The offshore sector had a strong year with an estimated 3.4 GW connected to grids,
mostly in Europe, for a world total exceeding 12 GW. Wind power is playing a major
role in meeting electricity demand in an increasing number of countries, including
Denmark (42% of demand in 2015), Germany (more than 60% in four states) and
Uruguay (15.5%).

Global Wind Power Industry
The wind power industry had another outstanding year thanks to record installations.
Most of the top turbine manufacturers broke their own annual installation numbers. By
early 2016, manufacturers had full order books, with some receiving record orders for
on- and offshore turbines, presaging momentum for future years. But rising
competition in the global marketplace and fragmentation in the market required that
manufacturers and developers be flexible to adapt in different environments. Spain’s
manufacturers, for instance, survived by exporting 100% of their production. Ongoing
technology improvements that are increasing capacity factors (such as custom turbine

The Asia Wind Energy Association is a regional based association.
Established in December 2016, the Asia Wind Energy Association
is the leading trade association for the wind energy sector in
Asia-Pacific.
The wind power sector is at a very nascent stage in the Asia-Pacific region and there is
a rapidly growing demand for more renewable energy. Acting as the industry
representative, the Asia Wind Energy Association aims to capitalize on this
opportunity.
The association aims to develop and communicate conclusive policies to support
energy regulators and governments in providing better policies for the wind sector and
to create a positive investment environment for developers and investors. This will
lead to a faster deployment of wind energy in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Asia Wind Energy Association acts as the regional platform for all wind power
industry stakeholders to collectively promote the best interests of the wind power
sector. Members include power project developers, turbine manufacturers, technical
consultants, financial institutions, regional associations and other institutions in the
