A new year represents new challenges, new projects and new learning opportunities. At WIN World we are feeling very
enthusiastic with this starting year and all of the training and inspiration programs we might bring to people and
organizations.
Thinking in the development of the economy as a whole and as a shared value success story, it is easy to conclude
that the more we work together, the more we win. We win through collaboration, we win through strong leadership
practices, we win through focus on the development of a more sustainable future. We win when we are together to
win.
Winning together is exactly the subject of our upcoming conference Porto Business School Leadership Grand
Conference 2014, which is now a few days away. Starting with Ram Charan, we’ll get the big and accurate picture of
the global tilt we are living, and how to lead within it. Then, Andrea Jung will bring us her love and capacity of
empowering others with an impactful intervention on how to multiply leaders to achieve great results in business and
society. To close the program, Jimmy Wales will share with all of us the incredible power of a project conceived to
promote individual and collective growth, where collaboration is both a foundation and an outcome of a supreme
global endeavor - Wikipedia.
For us, winning together is the life and business philosophy that will take us to embrace one of the greatest leadership
eras in modern business history. Winning together is making the difference at a larger scale.
We wish you an inspiring 2014!

There is a profound shift underway – a tilt – in economic power from the northern
hemisphere to the fast developing markets and economies of the South. What are the
major impacts in businesses and organizations?
Decision making and resources have to move to where the growth opportunities are. That
means the center of gravity for some companies must shift to the South, and in some
cases, very fast. What I mean by resources is people first, money second.
Success heavily depends on choosing the right people to lead in the South. They must
have a mindset, aptitude and attitude to learn the local market and figure out how to win
locally using the expertise and scale of the North. It’s wrong to assume that local
competition is not intense. Battles will be fought at both the local and the multinational level.
Leaders cannot succeed at the local level unless they immerse locally to learn the local
consumer preferences. Otherwise adaptations to the local market may be only superficial.
Shifting money to the South means investing money in the short run to win in the long run,
because it takes time to learn and build scale. But the most important part of money
resources is recruiting local people, building a local culture that is compatible with the
corporate identity, and training local people to make good decisions.
Leaders in the South sometimes behave like kids in a candy shop, because the longer term
opportunities are enormous. They have access to money and talent from across globe and
are more connected to local governments than the multinationals. My advice to them is to
select some segments and focus on them, build new competitive advantages, and develop
world class execution skills. But focus, focus, focus.
Running businesses for the future requires new leadership competencies. What is your advice for leaders committed to
win in this new world?
Some of the competencies require not just skill but also the right psychological framework. For example, winning in the global tilt
might require making a big bet on the future. You have to be adept at large-scale entrepreneurship—starting something new and
scaling it up fast, including building whatever capabilities are needed. The psychological part is having the inner fortitude to make
those decisions and drive them.
Leaders also need to understand the innovation process, how to harness the organization’s creativity to generate ideas, and
equally important but more often overlooked: convert good ideas into products or services that earn real revenues and profits.
Given the importance of having the right people in the right jobs, competence in selecting, developing, and retaining them can be a
make-or-break competence.
Amidst this global tilt, how can north and south win together? What can one teach to and learn from the other?
Companies can combine their strengths through cross-border alliances and joint ventures and the like. But whether or not the
relationship is formalized, there are opportunities for cross-border learning. Watch for those who are world-class at thinking
strategically, spotting new opportunities, setting priorities, or making trade-offs. Observe these leaders and their companies,
regardless of where they are based.
I have noticed that leaders in the South have high ambition and a great sense of urgency. They tend to be very decisive. This is
something leaders in the North can learn from. On the other hand, leaders in the South could learn from the North how to establish
systems and processes to maintain control as they grow without becoming too bureaucratic. They could also learn about risk
management practices.
You say that we are living in one of the greatest leadership eras in modern business history and you believe that a big part
of good leadership is preparation. In your opinion, where does a training and inspiration company make the difference
when supporting leaders and organizations to embrace and win in this global tilt?
No athlete ever becomes a champion and no team ever sustains a winning record without practice. Practice is a repetitive activity,
performed with discipline. It has frequency and rhythm. It involves having a coach who makes observations and gives feedback
essentially in real time in the name of continuous improvement. Leaders going forward need to practice coming together to share
information and make decisions and trade-offs at speed. That will give them the flexibility to respond to changing conditions in the
external environment, for example, in the volatility of currencies.
