Wilma Rudolph was born in 1940 in Tennessee and overcame polio as a child to become a champion track and field athlete. She wore a leg brace as a child but began walking without it at age 15. Rudolph attended Tennessee State University and won three gold medals at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, becoming the first American woman to win three golds in a single Olympics. She later worked as a teacher and track coach before passing away from brain cancer in 1994 at the age of 54.
