Wilma Rudolph was an American sprinter who won three gold medals at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. She had overcome polio as a child which left her with a disabled left leg. Through determination and years of treatment, she was eventually able to walk without leg braces or other assistance. She went on to set world records in track and field and become the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympics. Rudolph used her fame and success to establish a non-profit organization to provide coaching and support for underprivileged youth.
