Proactive Digitalisation Strategies to Maximise Revenue Growth
Illustrating how African payTV operators and broadcasters can lay the foundations for subscriber and revenue growth during this period of digitalisation through innovative multi-network deployment strategies.
This informative and interactive lunch session focussed on the new opportunities for operators to introduce video services that have historically not been possible. The discussion included the effect of the economic growth factors across Africa and particularly Sub-Saharan Africa, which is providing increased disposable income to the general population, current developments in creating a next-generation, IP-based network, and the opportunities to offer and monetise multi-screen services.
William Shakespeare, often regarded as one of the greatest playwrights and poets in the English language, was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, on April 26, 1564. While there are gaps in his biography, historians have been able to piece together much of his life based on available records and historical documents.
Early Life:
Birth and Family: William Shakespeare was the third of eight children born to John Shakespeare, a glove-maker and local prominent figure, and Mary Arden, the daughter of a wealthy landowner. He came from a middle-class family in a market town.
Education: It is believed that Shakespeare attended the King’s New School in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he received a basic education. His formal education did not extend to university, which was relatively common at the time.
Marriage and Family:
Marriage: In 1582, at the age of 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior. They had three children, including Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith.
Career:
Theatrical Career: In the late 1580s, Shakespeare moved to London, where he began working in the theater. He became an actor and playwright, eventually becoming a shareholder in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, a prominent theater company.
Playwriting:
Shakespeare wrote and produced many of his most famous works during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. His plays encompassed various genres, including tragedies (e.g., “Macbeth,” “Hamlet”), comedies (e.g., “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Twelfth Night”), and historical dramas (e.g., “Henry V,” “Richard III”).Shakespeare also wrote 154 sonnets and several narrative poems, including “Venus and Adonis” and “The Rape of Lucrece.”
Later Life:
Return to Stratford: Shakespeare retired to Stratford-upon-Avon in the early 1610s, likely due to financial success. There, he invested in property and became a respected figure in the community.
Death:
William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616, at the age of 52. He was buried in Holy Trinity Church in Stratford, where his grave remains a popular tourist attraction.
Legacy:
Literary Influence: Shakespeare’s works have had an enduring impact on English literature and theater. His plays and sonnets are still widely read and performed around the world.
Language and Vocabulary:
He made significant contributions to the English language, coining many new words and phrases that are still in use today.
Cultural Icon:
Shakespeare is considered a cultural icon, and his works continue to be studied and celebrated for their exploration of universal themes, complex characters, and unparalleled storytelling.
The Globe Theatre:
Shakespeare was closely associated with the Globe Theatre, one of the most famous theaters of his time. A reconstruction of the Globe, known as the Globe Theatre, stands in London today and hosts performances of his plays.
While many details of Shakespeare’s life remain the subject of speculation and debate, his enduring contributions to literature and
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) has had more theatrical works performed than any other playwright. To this day, countless theater festivals around the world honor his work, students memorize his eloquent poems and scholars reinterpret the million words of text he composed.
2. SHAKESPEARE’S FAMILY
• Born – April 23, 1564
• Baptized – April 26, 1564
• Father: John Shakespeare – a successful glover, landowner, moneylender
and agricultural dealer
• Mother: Mary Arden – daughter of a wealthy farmer
• The oldest son of eight children:
• Brothers: Gilbert, Richard, Edmund
• Older sisters: Joan (did not survive infancy) and Margaret
• Younger sisters: Joan and Anne
3. SHAKESPEARE’S YOUNG LIFE
• Went to school in Stratford on Avon
• Attended the King’s New School – one of the free public schools
established by the Church
• School would have started about 6:00 AM and ended at 5:00 PM with few
breaks in the day or vacation days.
• The main subject studied would have been Latin.
• There is some evidence that Shakespeare didn’t like to go to school, as he
often complains about formal education in his plays!
4. SHAKESPEARE AS A HUSBAND
AND FATHER
• Shakespeare got married in November of 1582 when he was 18 years old.
• His wife’s name was Anne Hathaway. She was 26 when they got married.
• Six months after the wedding, a daughter, Susannah was baptized.
• On February 2, 1585, Anne gave birth to twins – Judith and Hamnet.
• Hamnet died when he was 11 years old. Shakespeare had abandoned his
family at this point and was living in London.
• Susannah married a successful doctor, John Hall, in 1607.
• Judith married a successful vintner, Thomas Quiney, in February 1616.
• Shakespeare did maintain contact with his daughters and provided their
dowries and mentioned them in his will.
• There is some speculation that his marriage was a loveless one, as he does
not refer to Anne as his “loving” wife and only leaves her his “second best
bed.”
5. SHAKESPEARE THE
BUSINESSMAN
• Less than two years after leaving his family in Stratford (1585), there is
evidence that Shakespeare had become quite wealthy as he purchased New
Place, the “second largest house in Stratford” in 1587.
• In addition to the house, Shakespeare held several other large pieces of
land in the Stratford area.
• He also engaged in money lending like his father.
6. SHAKESPEARE’S DEATH
• Shakespeare died on the same day he was born – April 23.
• His death has been linked to his engagement in the festivities at his
daughter’s wedding, as he died just two days after.
• Ben Jonson noted that Shakespeare had consumed quite a bit of wine at
the wedding.
• Shakespeare was buried in the Holy Trinity Church under the epitaph he
wrote for himself:
“Good friend for Jesus’ sake forbear,
To dig the dust enclosed here:
Blest be the man that spares these stones,
And curst be he that moves my bones.”
