The Land Ethic By Aldo Leopold Essay
Question 1 The Land Ethic written by Aldo Leopold was critiqued by J. Baird Callicott. The
Land Ethic in short explained the idea that humans are not superior to animals or species on earth,
but humans should live on earth as simple members. (Leopold, 2013) Callicott found three things
that lead to the confusion, contempt, and contempt of Leopold s writings. The first thing that
Callicott discussed in reference to the neglect of Leopold s writings was the fact that they could
actually be done in a phrase or even one or two sentences. Leopold generalizes Darwin s writings
and the extended paradigm. Leopold states that all ethic s so far evolved rest upon a single
premise: that the individual is a member of a community of interdependent parts (Leopold, 2013).
Callicott explains that this basic phrase comes up again in The Land Ethic multiple times. This
theory provides a link of the community concept that all plants, animals, and birds are
interconnected with earth other. (Callicott, 2012) The second thing that Callicott discussed is that
Leopold departs from contemporary philosophical ethics paradigms and patterns. The Land Ethic
follows the paradigm that was constructed by Charles Elton, but the fact is that the writings follow
more in line with that of F. E. Clements and S.A. Forbes paradigm. Leopold states that there are the
same repeated paradoxes, man versus the biotic citizen, land the slave versus the collective organism

Censorship Laws At The Time Of Release
Sound s importance is often overlooked in film, it s either completely ignored or relegated to a
minor status. This is surprising as sound can have such an impact on the audience s emotions and
can mold their reactions. The scene I have chosen to analyse is the shower scene from the much
discussed 1960 Hitchcock film Psycho.
Censorship laws at the time of release were so strict, Hitchcock had to disturb in other ways without
actually revealing too much visually, one main technique was through the use of sound. A
particular positive outcome from harsh censorship laws, was the inventive and resourceful approach
that writers and directors used to get around them that ultimately lead to the end result being more
interesting to watch and much more memorable. If Herrmann s terror inducing score had not been
present, this scene would be much less powerful. Due to the fast paced cuts, if there was no music,
the sound differences would be much more noticeable cutting from shot to shot. Viewing the scene
without the music, shows how the violins help to cover up unimpressive sound editing.
In this case, music has a vital role of helping the film promote tension throughout. Usually, isolated
instruments are used to build up to a key event to increase tension and subconsciously link the idea
of vulnerability to the viewers. However in Psycho, composer Bernard Herrmann uses just the
sound of the shower leading up to the key moment and then the isolated instruments (violins and
cellos)

Human Nature, Our Downfall
In a metaphor, the evolution of civilization is in many ways similar to the evolution of flight. A
long story made brief both required multiple attempts, before they were able to function sustainably.
Just as the engineers in the big firms which produce the machines Airplanes and Helicopters used
for flight, are constantly attempting to improve upon their products, we as members of our
respective societies are always looking for better, faster and cheaper ways to sustain ourselves.
Civilizationrequires three main materials if you will; Politics the role of the state and political
organization, the spokesperson promoting the idea that might is right, Economics the production,
exchange and economic organization of society. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
P.2). This becomes more obvious with the rise of global issues such as, global warming. We
demand so much out of this planet, take so much for granted, and care so much for our self
interests, yet we fail to consider the health of our home the earth, which is irreplaceable. The
green house effect takes place when carbon dioxide is over present in the atmosphere (carbon
dioxide traps solar energy heating the atmosphere). As Godrej points out, a vital component of
human advancement since industrialization began, aided by greed, is throwing the system off
balance. By burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) to supply our power and
manufacturing needs and to drive our cars, were adding over six billion tons of carbon to the
atmosphere each year (Godrej p.18) adding the chopping down of forests continues unabated,
diminishing the earths ability to soak up carbon. The effects of carbon build up or the greenhouse
effect are not yet fully known, however, what we do know is that the longer this issue persists,
the less likely it can be resolved, as is suggested in the Godrej reading we are reaching a tipping
point.
The political realm of civilization is strongly influenced by capitalism. The political realm is an
arena in which elected officials represent the interests of particular groups within societies. The
political realm of society comes from the necessary, though very slow and gradual, consequence of a

Just A Bruise Sparknotes
You re Okay It s Just A Bruise is a novel by Rob Huizenga, based on personal experiences by Rob
Huizenga as team physician of the Los Angeles Raiders.
Rob Huizenga, the speaker of the novel, was chief medical resident at Cedars Sinai Medical
Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. Duties as chief medical resident was
teaching students how to spot various uncommon diseases. Before working with the Los
Angeles Raiders, Rob Huizenga met Dr. Robert Rosenfeld. Dr. Robert Rosenfeld, Chief of
Orthopedics at Cedar Sinai, was the Los Angeles Raider s orthopedist. Dr. Rosenfeld explained
to Huizenga that the Raiders current internist will probably be replaced soon and asked him
would he be interested in working as the next team internist. Dr. Rosenfeld gave Huizenga a tour
of the Raiders facility. During the tour, Huizenga met Al Davis, former coach and owner of the
Los Angeles Raiders. Dr. Huizenga s first game as the team internist was to just stand back today
and watch [Dr.Rosenfeld]. Dr. Rosenfeld becomes busy with one injured player, while another one
becomes injured. Huizenga, for the first time, deals with an injured player. The player had a

This eventually lead to Lyle Alzado s death. Dr. Huizenga faced another dilemma when players

The Film Of A Passage Of India
The biggest obstacle any movie director must face is trying to please a critical audience. It is
especially difficult if the movie they are producing is based on a popular novel, such as E. M.
Forster s, A Passage to India. Each reader has their own perspective of what the characters are
supposed to be like and it is the director s job to try their hardest to please everyone and give an
accurate representation of the text. David Lean did a fantastic job with his casting decisions for
his 1984 film version of A Passage to India. In fact, Lean manages to clarify the novels intentions.
The characterization in David Lean s film of A Passage to India mirrors the novel s original
intentions and provides even more depth to the characters. At the heart of the novel is Dr. Aziz a
kind hearted Indian man who just wants to prove that Indians can be friends with British people.
When he meets Mrs. Moore in the mosque for the first time he is pleased to see that the British
can be understanding and kind. He is excited, much more by the knowledge that someone
sympathized with them... his heart began to glow secretly. Presently is burst into speech. You
understand me, you know what others feel. Oh, if others resembled you! (21). After this first
promising encounter with a Brit, Aziz becomes even more eager to earn the approval and
friendship of more British people. He plans an extravagant trip to the Marabar Caves to impress
them with the wonders of India. When Mrs. Moore can t

The Importance Of Racial Differences
1.How and when did you became aware of racial difference, what was the context of that
realization, ang what transitions you have gone through since your early recognition of racial
differences.
Most part of my life was spend in Cameroon ( Africa). Racial differences was never an issues. We
never talk about race differences, but tribal differences. While some tribes claim to be the dominant
tribe others feel they are being marginalized due systemic corruption. For instance the government
influential persons like, the Governors, minister, divisional officers etc. would employed and pass
out opportunities only to people from their tribes. If by chance or some reason one happens to be
employed in that department, one is likely to experience the tribal differences.
However, as an African, at the age of 12, we learned about slave trades; Particularly which tribe
was responsible for capturing other tribe members, what techniques they used, how they were
categorized, how much they were worth but interestingly, how they were transported and treated at
their destination. Although there was relieved to know that, slave trade has been abolished but the
incident still stigmatized us and elevated our anger towards the betraying tribes. Before coming to
America, I know that African American are called niggers , a racial slur used derogatorily towards
people of color.
Learning about slave trade at the age 12, was when I became aware of racial differences, Although
it has been difficult to grasp the understanding or to put into perspective how white people the slave
master were treating slaves particularly Africans, but there is more anger towards the betraying
tribes, who were the dominant and privileged tribe at that time. Coming from an egalitarian point of
view slave trade was sinful and odious but most disgusting are those who sold their own people,
knowing fully well what their fate would be and for something insignificant. Some of the things that
the were use during trade by barter was pathetic; human beings were exchange for clothes,
ammunition, furniture etc.
However, even with the anger towards the betraying tribes, good came out of their action, for
instance, most African America have a better life

The Conflict Theory Of Homelessness
Homelessness is the condition of people without a permanent place to live, such as a house.
People who are homeless are unable to acquire and maintain regular, safe, secure housing. It has
been a problem for a long time but it has become a social issue from the past few decades. People
think about homelessness as one s personal problem and seek them to face it. Moreover, the
majority of the people think that the only reason behind being homelessnessis their choice and just
laziness to do any work and lead to a better life. But that s just one incomplete perception about the
homelessness.
There are many reasons behind the homelessness of the people such as unemployment, poverty,
lack of resources, mental sickness, physically injured, addiction issues and a lot more then these. It
has many effects on the person without a place to stay. The important of all is that their health is
completely comprised as they have been living in unhygienic environment which can lead to a lot
of health issues in the future for them. Homeless individuals are more prone to diseases, such as
cardio respiratory diseases, skin diseases, and tuberculosis. However, people think that
homelessness of a person does not affect them in any way. But that s completely ... Show more

workers. The theory suggests that owners basically exploit the workers, depriving them of the
basic human necessities such as food and shelter. Meanwhile, the workers believe that they are
taken care of adequately, and they rely on the owners for their well being. But the owners do not
have the workers best interests in mind because they want to produce wealth by any means. Potent

Engine 6 Analysis
Most, if not all, pieces of railroad machinery have had various changes made from their original
form while in service. Engine 6, a 36 gauge 8 18 D 74 mogul built in October of 1891 by the
Burnham, Williams Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as construction number 12288 for the
Surry, Sussex, and Southampton Railway/Surry Lumber Co. of Virginia and currently owned by
the Midwest Central Railroad, is no exception to this rule. Engine 6 is currently vital and has
been vital to the Midwest Central Railroad s operation since 1960, being used as one of the two
main engines for many years. Some found that with this responsibility came the need for the
locomotive to be fitted with some historically inaccurate apparatuses. Of course, over the years, it

RNA World Hypothesis Essay
RNA world hypothesis is a hypothesis to explain the origins of cells. According to the theory, a
form of RNA, or ribonucleic acid, developed that was capable of self replicating. It is said to be
the earliest life forms, from which all other organisms come. While modern organisms are built up
from proteins, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and RNA, this organism is said to have consisted
only of DNA. The reason scientists believe RNA was the first biomolecular structure is because
it stores information in a similar role to DNA, but at the same time acts as a catalyst in some
reactions, like protein. Catalysts accelerate the rate of reactions necessary to metabolize, or
balance a cell. Essentially, RNA fulfills some roles of DNA and protein, thus... Show more content

For one thing, prebiotic Earth did not have favorable conditions for the formation of nucleotides by
any means. One such problem is that nucleotides require a phosphate group to link, which is
implausible to have occurred naturally without life
The hazardous conditions of prebiotic Earth would also be constantly damaging and denaturing
chemicals forming into RNA and traces of RNA, making it implausible for the RNA to cluster
and begin replicating, as well as survive. Ribose likely would not be very sustainable within the
early world, with the likely possibility of hydrolysis as one of many factors.
Since its conception in the 60 s, RNA world hypothesis has seen numerous discoveries and
possibilities. As recently as 2011, there were RNA components found in meteorites such as
guanine and adenine. This implies RNA may have come from space. Glycolaldehyde has been
found in a distant star system, which is necessary to form RNA, and further backs the idea of
extraterrestrial origins of life. Scientists have also tried to support the hypothesis with claims that
RNA was the source of life as we know it, but other nucleic acids were the predecessor to RNA.
One such suspect is peptide nucleic acid (PNA). Conclusive research behind such claims has yet to

What Is The Truth-Belief-Belief Conceptual Analysis Of...
In this paper, I will discuss the truth belief justification conceptual analysis of knowledge, which
I will refer to as TBJ, Gettier cases, and an example that refutes TBJ. Conceptual analysis is an
analysis of a proposition P with given premises to acquire knowledge of that P. The truth belief
justification analysis of knowledge fails to provide sufficient conditions for someone to possess
knowledge. For a condition to be necessary, it has to be satisfied to have knowledge of a
proposition. If a condition is sufficient, then the person x will have some information to know
something about proposition P. Jointly sufficient conditions are conditions that all need to be
satisfied together to have knowledge about some P. They are necessary and supposedly jointly
sufficient, but Gettier cases prove that extra conditions on top of TBJ are required to be jointly
sufficient. The TBJ analysis identifies three conditions that are necessary and supposedly jointly
sufficient for some person x to know some proposition P. Truthindicates that the proposition P has
to be true. The truth needs to correspond to some true fact that relates to the world, such as that
the Earth is round. It is necessary because a proposition P can only be deduced by factual
evidence shown to x. However, truth by itself is not sufficient because truth itself is just a random
fact. In addition, the person, x, needs to hold some sort of beliefin their proposition P. If you do not
believe in a proposition P, then it cannot be known, since you will not have any grounds on
which to base your knowledge of that P. It is a necessary condition since you can only know
what you believe . However, it is not a sufficient condition by itself because a belief is just x s
opinion of a subject. Finally, the person, x s belief has to be accompanied by observations from
their senses, prior knowledge, or deductive reasoning, which in effect, explains what the
justification is. This may come from what people may see with their eyes, or forming a conclusion
from previously assumed premises. Justification is a necessary condition because the allegedly
known beliefs have to be adequately justified. Fallibility of justification is assumed since no
justification can

government. Research demonstrates that the Federal government has responded to the criticism of
their lack of oversight of post secondary for profit institutions with numerous regulations, some
apply only to for profit institutions. These regulations control everything from, the programs
offered, the way admissions recruiters are compensated, limitations on default rates and
limitations on the revenue a for profit institution can derive from federal funds. However, the
research around for profit educations does not address the adequacy of the regulations in serving
their underlying purpose or to address the impact, if any, on for profit institutions. Synopsis on the
Research of For Profit Post Secondary Institutions When researchers take a historical look, for
profit post secondary institutions have been in the United States since the colonial days. In the

Raising The Minimum Wage Is A Bad Idea
In announcing his wrongheaded proposal to increase the minimum wage to $9 an hour, President
Obama spoke in lofty terms: In the wealthiest nation on Earth, he said in his State of the Union
address last month, no one who works full time should have to live in poverty.
If the debate proceeds as it has many times in the past, then most Democrats will embrace the
president s message and back the proposal, while most Republicans will oppose it, on the grounds
that higher labor costs will lead to higher unemployment.
But we shouldn t rely on political opinions in this debate. Facts clearly demonstrate that raising the
minimum wage is a bad idea.
The case against raising the minimum wage is straightforward: A higher wage makes it more
expensive for firms to hire workers. How big an effect does this have on the job market?
Economists debate this. But no one argues that increasing the minimum wage increases the
number of unemployed workers who find jobs. In the end, the trade off is clear. People who keep
their jobs get more money; those who lose their jobs, or fail to get new ones, suffer.
In announcing his proposal to increase the minimum wage, the president argued that doing so
would alleviate poverty. The president is certainly correct to turn his attention to the poor, many of
whom have been suffering for years in a tough economy. And it is clearly desirable for households
that engage in full time work not to live in poverty. But increasing the minimum wage would

Three Religious Paintings
In this project I will compare the setting of three religious paintings. One set involves the interior
of fifteenth century architect, another located in a natural landscape, and one with a heavenly
backdrop. This expository paper will reveal how these different locations affect a viewer s
spiritual experience, and decipher whether or not these environments are generic, symbolic, or
specific. The artwork titled Painting of Ghent Altarpiece in Chapel, located in Rijksmuseum,
Amsterdam, was created by Jan van Eyck (Davies et al. 482). The scale and setting of this
painting is unmistakably impressive. The purpose of the altarpiece is to clarify the ceremony
performed before it (482). Jan work is big in scale and thorough with detail and color that glows
(482). This environment is a generic place, although it is a holy place, it is also very common as
chapels can be found in virtually every church. The fifteenth century landscape calendar page
Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry was created by the Limbourg Brothers in France (Davies et
al. 474). In this panel, the month of July is illustrated, as is the passage of time in many ways
(474). The dome shape at the top of the seasonal training marks the days of the week numerally

Reflection Paper On Refugees
The first day of my internship at the Refugee Legal Service in Dublin, Ireland I learned the
difference between watching news clips on refugees, and what it meant to actually go through
the whole process. The asylum process is a painstaking, time consuming, and emotional ordeal.
During my time there, I ended up meeting with dozens of refugees, but there was one event that
I can still remember clearly. I was invited to help work on a case involving a woman and her son
fleeing from South Africa due to facial scarring on the first born child. After a meeting with
several members of our legal team, I reached out to the caseworker and asked if there was
anything extra I could do to help their case. She asked that I try to find more evidence to support
the claim that facial scarring was still going on in the village the family was from. After
spending days researching the area the village was in, I was able to find other accounts of facial
scarring. Because of my extra efforts that helped her case, I was invited to attend the hearing at
the High Court. This opportunity was incredible and overwhelming and I know this was only a
fraction of the work that you have to go through to be granted asylum. The hearing was eight
hours, long and I was one of the few people allowed to sit in the back of the courtroom and take
notes. Throughout the entire day it was interesting to see how the asylum process actually works,
as opposed to hearing or reading about it. During the lunch break I

Summary Of To A Louse By Robert Burns
Robert Burns wrote the poem To a Louse in 1786, in Scotland, that emphasizes the social
constructs of man and as well as man s vanity. Burns then goes on in further detail to explain the
artificial concept of social class and perspective of the individual in society. He does this by
describing one day sitting in church where he is behind gorgeous young noble woman while a louse
is crawling upon her silken bonnet. The lady is completely oblivious to the fact that the louse is
upon her bonnet while everyone sitting in the pews nearby point and wink with one another at the
appearance of the louse. Through this ridiculous and humorous poem Burns is highlighting the
vanity of human nature and the artificial construct of social classthrough his own eyes that he is
seeing in eighteenth century Scotland. In the poem, the reader finds Burns sitting in his pew in
church where he notices a louse, a small wingless insect sometimes called lice or fleas, crawling
upon the bonnet of a young and elegant lady in the seat in front of him. At this point in the poem
Burns is surprised that the louse would dare set his feet upon such a fine lady rather than that of
a beggar or vagabond in the streets, where a louse would normally be found. Here Burns then
goes on to describe the louse as Detested, shunn d, by saunt (saint) an sinner and more usually
associated with the likes of the lower class, such as beggars and slaves, and not the upper class
from which the lady is from, according to The Bard: Robert Burns, a Biography by Robert
Crawford. Burns then begins to admire the bravado and courage of the louse as he makes the
trek up the noble lady s bonnet. Where Burns then turns his attention to the elegant lady whom he
calls Jenny. Which he then tells her not to shake her head in an air of pride as she is completely
unaware of the humorous effect that the sight of the louse has upon all of the people nearby. As
Burns watches those around him take notice of this spectacle in front of him he wishes that the
supreme power of God would give us the ability to see ourselves as others see us. Thus, riding
ourselves of our pride, vanity, and misconceptions in one another created by the human construct of
class in society and

Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are a family of multi subunit transmembrane
neurotransmitter receptors. They do many functions in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, or nAChRs are receptors that make a response to the
neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Nicotinic receptors can respond to some drugs, such as the
nicotinic receptor agonist nicotine. So where can we find these receptors?
We find these receptors in the central nervous systemof humans (CNS). But is play an important
role in peripheral nervous system for example :

Foreign Countries Should Not Help Out A Less Developed...
Throughout history, many have debated about whether a wealthier country (developed) should
help out a poor, less developed countries. The U.S. disbursed $33.2 billion $19 billion in
economic assistance to 184 countries and $14.2 billion in military assistance to 142 countries.
(Forbes) Is it beneficial for a more developed nations to help out a less developed country?
There are billions of dollars that developed countries give to the developing countries to say that
they are helping the poor and that they are bring the poor countries up out of the dirt. But studies
have shown that giving money alone does not help, it could actually make the country worse
off. Foreign countries should not give money to developing nations because the developing
countries become too reliant on the developed countries, it does not help the developing
countries, and with money, comes corruption. The better way for foreign aid to work which is
to give technological aid. A quote from Maimonides, Give a man a fish and you feed him for a
day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This quote tells a tale of how society
works and the importance of learning. This can be applied to a multiple of things like how a
developed country needs to teach another country how to survive. The developed countries are just
giving money and food instead of teaching the public about how to grow food and how to have a
stable economy. Countries around the world that depend on foreign aid are now

Why Is Uranus Unique
Uranus
Uranus is a very a very unique planet. It s different because of its tilt, color and a somewhat
different surface. Uranus is different than other planets in our solar system. It does have a tilt, odd
color and a different surface, but why? Technically there isn t a surface to uranus. If anyone tried to
land on the surface of uranus the spacecraft would sink through and fall down to the planet s icy
core. The reason for this os because the planet is made up of mainly hydrogen and helium making
it a gas planet. At the core of the planet there are water like elements, such as methane and
ammonia. The planet is referred to as the ice giant because of the temperatures. This planet is also
blue because the methane in Uranus upper atmosphere takes in the red light from the Sun and then
reflects the light absorbed back into space. This is why Uranus appears to be blue. ... Show more

Uranus lies 98 degrees off of its normal axes. The reasoning to this is that uranus rotates clockwise
when all the other planets rotate counter clockwise. Essentially this makes Uranus upside down.
Another fact is that most planets are off their axes a little bit. Earth is off its axis by 23В° and jupiter
3В°. In theory, if uranus rotated normally it would be off by 8 degrees. A normal planet is off by
30В°s at most. The reason why Uranus is so cold is because it s 1.784 billion miles away from
the sun. Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun it is right after saturn. The distance isn t the only
factor to why this planet is so cold. Scientists believe that long ago the planet lost all its heat due to
major activity in the atmosphere. Uranus is 224В° celsius. Making it colder than the 8th planet
away from the sun,

Interpretation of the Balcony Scene by Baz Luhrmann and Franco Zeffirelli of William
Shakespreare s Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a famous love story written by William
Shakespeare. Two interpretations were made of this text into a film by the two directors, Baz
Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968). The films use different types of media to portray
the characters and the overall context of Shakespeare s play. I will be focusing on Act two Scene

Luhrmann s interpretation of the film we are introduced to a modern scene which makes it easier

It triggers off when Romeo bumps into the statues and smashes them on the floor which makes
the dogs bark and there is an addition of rustling leaves, these are some of the sound effects that
have been used, which builds up tension and causes more of a scene. In action to this, Romeo
climbs up the wall that leads to Juliet s balcony in order to get to her. The camera shot used is a
close up of Romeo to show his emotional distress that he is feeling. The statues in this scene
represent Juliet as a goddess and that she is very important, this is a key fact to remember in
Romeo s eyes. This version is different to the text as Juliet does not say her famous lines from
the balcony, but comes down from her room to the pool outside, where she recites her lines with
passion thinking of her dear Romeo. In Zeffirelli s account of the film, Romeo is shown down
below in the bushes whereas Juliet is the higher and more powerful person out of the two of them,
and she is shown as the higher person sitting on the balcony. Once again this has been showing the
higher and lower and lower angle shots. It also shows a point of view camera shot throughout this
scene, meaning that the film would be played throughout the character s eyes, as if Romeo or Juliet
were filming it themselves. This is done a lot in

The Pros And Cons Of Gerrymandered States
Gerrymandering, the process where politicians get to choose their voters. Say there is a state with
a population of fifty, now three fifths of that state are democratic and the other two fifths are
republican, now we need to separate this state into five congressional districts. The best way to do
this would be so there are two republican representatives and three democratic. However with
gerrymandering democrats can draw districts that are unfair and they get all five representatives,
but if republicans draw the districts they can draw them were there are three republican
representatives and only two democratic representatives. This process is seen through many states.
In North Carolina forty four percent of voters voted democratic, however thanks to a creative
congressional map, seventy seven percent of representatives were republican. The twelfth district in
North Carolina is considered the most gerrymandered district in the country, and is home to two
more of the top ten gerrymandered districts. Republicans rule six of the most Gerrymandered states,

Media Representation Of Gay Characters In Tv Shows
Over the last few decades, our society went through a huge transformation in culture, politics and
media that no one else could have foreseen. There is an obvious increase in the acceptance of
homosexuality. Even though lesbian and gay people have gradually moved onto the stage in
growing numbers, there are still some problems exist in the ways that media perpetuate
homosexual stereotypes. According to an article by Chong suk Han, The subjective storytelling
found in journalistic pieces reinforces social inequalities by forstering such feelings of collective
belonging based on class, gender, sexual preference, subcultural lifestyle or whatever (Chong suk
Han, 2008). Nowadays, the media plays an important role in carrying and transforming the new
cultural ideas toward the whole society, few could ignore the existence of lesbian and gaypeople. In
order to prevent discriminating them from the other groups, more accurate representation of
homosexuals should be provide on the mainstream media. This content analysis paper will focus

Part B Integrated Summary- Surgical Safety
PART B INTEGRATED SUMMARY SURGICAL SAFETY
The World Health Organisation (WHO) implemented the surgical safety checklist, to minimise the
discrepancies that occur as a result of improper identification of the patient (appendix O post 3).
Improper identification leads to wrong procedure, hence complication and possibly death (Position
Statement Surgical Safety 2015). The WHO checklist helps to improve surgical safety through
confirming safety practices are upheld and developing better communication within the
multidisciplinary team (Position Statement Surgical Safety 2015), thus providing optimum patient
care (ACORN Competency standard 5). Surgery related complication and mortality was reduce by
33%, through a study of eight hospitals from 2007 to 2008 (Position Statement Surgical Safety
2015). Therefore proving that compliance with safety measure were increased as a result of
endorsing the SSC, and obliges to competency standard 3.3. Through briefing and debriefing,
standard of care is improved, as the whole multidisciplinary team is made aware of the procedure,
and allows for optimal performance, which decrease surgery time, thus improve surgical safety
(ACORN Competency Standard 9). Furthermore it is important that each hospital adapt their own
policy in regards to the type of facility, such as in the occurrence of near miss episode (appendix
1,), institutions must refine their policy to provide the best care for the patients (Position Statement
Surgical Safety 2015).

of both women. As the both of the wooing is done by Richard himself there are many

second wooing is wooing the daughter through her mother. The main difference between the two
scenes are that Richard intended to be king in Act 1 Scene 2 and already is king in Act 4 Scene

effective in battle than iron and iron alloy based weapons, as iron is harder and harder blades that

babylonians were so good at the empire building that later armies modeled their weapons after the

They wore breastplates made out of bronze because the top of the torso is a large target and
contains vital organs that need extra protection. Helmets were made out of copper to reduce
weight on the head and increase comfort during battle. Fighting on foot requires a combination
of heavy protection and mobility, and this was an area where the Babylonians decided to trade
off defense for agility. The Babylonians lived in the city of Babylonia, based in central southern
Mesopotamia. This city was located on the river Euphrates in what is now known as southern
Iraq. The city first came into prominence as the royal city of king Hammurabi around the year of
1790 BC. The Babylonians built an empire that gave the world the hanging gardens of babylon,
one of the seven wonders of the world. They also constructed the tower of babel, this tower was
made out of baked brick which was a figurative. That place created to be a place for worshiping.
The Babylonians are also credited with giving the world codified

Social Media Addiction And Internet Addiction
Relationship between Social Media Addiction and Internet Privacy: Informal community clients can
share diverse bits of individual data with others; in any case, these subtle elements might be abused
by companions. Net and Acuity s review (2005) of Facebook clients protection concerns found that
91 percent of clients uploaded their photos, 88 percent shared their date of birth, 40 percent
demonstrated their telephone number, and 51 percent composed their present address. Sharing
individual data, for example, this can lead to abuse of information, regardless of whether purposeful
or not. For instance, a few people share profile subtle elements such as their full name, sexual
orientation and telephone number with their companions (Wills Zeljkovic., 2011). On the off
chance that the informal community account of one of the client s companions is hacked, the
spammer or the programmer can abuse these points of interest to blackmail the client (Rosenblum
2007). The capacity to control protection alternatives is basic to expanding the clients trust in their
interpersonal organization suppliers. Since Internetclients speak to a scope of various societies and
ages, protection alternatives ought to be clear, basic and simple to utilize. Clients must be able to
control their protection choices whenever. These protection alternatives enable clients to
acknowledge or dismiss the scattering of their data to others. For instance, a few clients would

A Christmas Carol Similarities
Does the christmas carol hold the same meaning in any version? Does the story even have
meaning or is it just made for our entertainment? I believe the story does have meaning, but that
the meaning lies deeper than what most believe. I believe the similarities and differences in the
book and movie help illustrate the good it is to turn your life around, not for others, but for
yourself. The disney version of A Christmas Carol, featuring Jim Carrey, and the book written by
Charles Dickens are both about Ebenezer Scroogeturning his life around for the better. The book
and movie have many similarities. One similarity would be that Scrooge is shown to be a
monster until the end when he proves himself otherwise. By doing this, the story shows that no
matter how bad people believe you are, don t be afraid to change because it is never to late.
Although the book and movie have some similarities they also have differences. One difference
would include the movie started with Marley being placed in a coffin. During this time Scrooge
took the coins from Marley s eyes. This small scene very much enhances the amount of desire
Scrooge has for money. Although the book does illustrate Scrooge s immense amount of
selfishness, the movie can help people understand easier.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two pieces of entertainment both paint all three spirits to be different in shapes, sizes, and
appearance. The ghost of Christmas past is small and quiet because you re past is something you
do not think of being as very large or important. The ghost of Christmas present is large and jolly.
This may be because the present is believed to be the most large, important part of your life and
you want to make it as happy as can be. The last of the three is the ghost of Christmas past, who is
shadowy and dark, making you fear it. Nevertheless, the three are crucial parts to any version of the

Writing Techniques of Emily Dickinson Essay
Emily Dickinson is one of the most interesting female poets of the nineteenth century. Every author
has unique characteristics about him/her that make one poet different from another, but what cause
Emily Dickinson to be so unique are not only the words she writes, but how she writes them. Her
style of writing is in a category of its own. To understand how and why she writes the way she does,
her background has to be brought into perspective. Every poet has inspiration, negative or positive,
that contributes not only to the content of the writing itself, but the actual form of writing the
author uses to express his/her personal talents. Emily Dickinsonis no different. Her childhood and
adult experiences and culture form... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The controversy surrounding Emily Dickinson is her odd lifestyle and her tendencies to be
somewhat of a recluse. She is sometimes considered abnormal because she does things
differently from most others. She spends much of her life dressed in white and withdrawn from
much of society. Of course, her peers take this negatively, but what they do not understand is
that her being so private is more of a meditation to her, instead of a hiding. She just wants to
escape the pressures she feels are normally required of women. She does not want to be a servant
to sick and elderly. She feels she has more potential for her mind to grow, and those obligations
would just be hindrances to her writing (McQuade 1255). Her childhood and her staying out of
society as an adult, along with many other aspects known and not known, influence her poems and
the style in which she goes about writing the works. Her techniques of writing are completely
different from any other writer, whether prose or poetry. Dickinson composes her phrases by
marking them off with a dash, placing a space before and after. This small maneuver places more
emphasis on her impress of the mind in its analysis of experience (McQuade 1256). Her slant
thymes and unique form of expression produces more of an oddness to the audience.
One of Emily Dickinson s unique forms of writing is her excessive use

gardening, gathering of wild berries and collecting wild rice were done at this time. Usually the
same band would go to the same gardening and fishing site every summer. The Ojibwa people
created many forms of tools, such as a pair of bone weaving needles. Bone weaving needles are
made out of bones and are flat and speculate shaped with a hole in the center. These needles were
used to make rugs, mats and blankets for comfort for the wigwam. Bags were made out of skin

Supreme Court Ruling Summary
What was the Supreme Court ruling?
The Supreme Court ruled announced their ruling on June 28, 1978 but there was not a majority
opinion. Four major justices, Rehnquist, Stewart, Burger, and Stevens, voted against the minority
admission program for all school because it violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The other four
justices, Marshall, Brennan, White, and Blackmun, voted that the affirmative action is acceptable
within certain areas. However, the plurality opinion was given by Justice Powell. This gave the
ruling a 5 4 in favor of Allan Bakke. Powell gave his opinion that the using racial quotas as the
deciding factor of one s admission was violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth
Amendment. However, affirmative action is permissible by Universities but only if used alongside
with other factors. This meant that Universities had to discontinue their quota system for minorities
and that UC Davis violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. Under these
circumstances Allan Bakke was allowed to attend UC Davis.
The main arguments
UC Davis appealed and filed a petition for writ of certiorari in December 1976 because Superior
Court of California ruled that UC Davis needed to shut down their minority program due to equal
rights for every race. In order for the Supreme Court to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Regents of the University of California v. Bakke case was based around race and how it violated
the Fourteenth Amendment. This is a landmark case because it did not only show that minorities
are protected by the Fourteenth Amendment but majorities as well. The ruling on this case also
allowed institutions to use affirmative action in favor with other factors to a person s advantage.
Any government funded institution can use affirmative action such as employment or admission to a

Examples Of Reflection Essay
Reflection Essay
At the end of August as I started my first semester in English 99 I was a different person who had
a fixed mindset and thought I would never be able to correctly structure or organize an essay.
Looking back, at my progress, I definitely know I am more than ready for English 100.
I have incorporated many of the strategies I recently learned throughout the course of the semester
to improve both my in class and out of class essay. To start off with I enhanced my introduction on
both essays expanding the main idea in my thesis and thoroughly answering the prompt question. I
also, changed a few of my word choices, because most of them did not specify or convey my
thoughts clearly. Now, for my evidence as I referred back to previous reading selections I
correctly formated my quotes placing quotation marks and commas in the right place as well as
paraphrasing key concepts into 25 words or less in only one sentence to explain a chosen quote.
Many rearrangements were made in my body paragraphs where I would start my ideas but not
finish my analysis. Adding examples either from experience or any related ideas, made both my
essays so much better and more coherent. Lastly, I appended much more information to wrap up
my conclusions, since they were not straightforward or neither restate my thesis statement.
For my reading and writing processes I have learned ample techniques to become better and more
successful in each and every unit, especially the very last one, The Dark Side of Happiness, by
June Gruber, because of its intricate and complex key points it was a challenging reading.
Coming from High School where teachers do not exemplify any techniques caused me to be
uncomfortable with rigorous and demanding readings like this (The Dark Side of Happiness.) I
can now say my understanding of how important it is to read and write grew profoundly. I have
never really considered myself a great reader, since I do not enjoy reading, but knowing how to
dissect, go under the surface, and more in depth in each reading influenced my perception. I was
then introduced to brainstorming as well, a method used most often to express your thoughts and
ideas without them being right. In addition, knowing how to

Simon Wiesenthal
A man once said, Technology without hatred can be a blessing. Technology with hatred is
always a disaster (Simon Wiesenthal). Simon is trying to say that social media with hatred is
not as enjoyable to use, where as without hatred it can be resourceful and fun. I agree with this
quote because cyber bullying is nothing to joke about. It can cause death and Simon really
speaks out when using this quote in his writing. Simon Wiesenthal is an author who was born on
December 31, 1908 in Buczacz, Galicia. Simon died on September 20, 2005. The man lived a
rough but eventful life, says his spouse Cyla Muller, who died in 2003. Simons father died in

Cyytoprotective Role Of DJ-1, Mitophagy And Cell Death
DJ 1 protects against mtDNA damage, mitophagy and cell death. DJ 1 is a multifunctional
protein that protects cells from oxidative stress via several molecular processes including
regulating gene transcription, mediating cell signal transduction pathways, stabilizing
cytoprotective proteins and scavenging ROS (3). DJ 1 is expressed in human primary alveolar
type II cells (preliminary data) and we have recently postulated that plays a role in the antioxidant
defense system in the lung (REF). The importance of DJ 1 can be supported by several
observations. First, DJ 1 mutations are pathogenic (4), second, oxidation of cysteine and
methionine residues within DJ 1 was reported as a sensor of its activity (5) and third, the novel

Research Plan
Preliminary Results
Isolation of human primary ATII cells.
We will isolate ATII cells from de identified control organ donors whose lungs were not suitable
for transplantation and donated for medical research through Temple Biobank in collaboration with
Dr. Gerard Criner (Temple University, letter attached) as we previously described (7, 9, 10). For
ATII cellisolation, we used magnetic microbeads (Miltenyi, Biotec Inc.) and epithelial cell
adhesion molecule (Ep CAM) positive selection. Purified ATII cells display about 90% purity as
detected by staining with pro surfactant protein C (proSP C) and ATII280, which are specific ATII
cell markers (Fig. 2). In this grant proposal, we plan to use ATII cells isolated from at least 12 non
smoker and 12 smoker control lung donors and 12 patients with emphysema (GOLD IV). Lung
tissue from individuals with this disease will be obtained in collaboration with Dr. Criner.
DJ 1 Cys106 SO3 in patients with emphysema. Initial proof of concept studies were performed in
ATII cells obtained from patients with emphysema in comparison with control lung donors. We
found high expression of DJ 1 Cys106 SO3 in ATII cells obtained from individuals with this disease
using a specific DJ 1 antibody (AbDSerotec; Fig. 3). The presence of this DJ 1 form was
confirmed by mass spectrometry analysis; and we did not find this modification in control ATII

  • 2. The Land Ethic By Aldo Leopold Essay Question 1 The Land Ethic written by Aldo Leopold was critiqued by J. Baird Callicott. The Land Ethic in short explained the idea that humans are not superior to animals or species on earth, but humans should live on earth as simple members. (Leopold, 2013) Callicott found three things that lead to the confusion, contempt, and contempt of Leopold s writings. The first thing that Callicott discussed in reference to the neglect of Leopold s writings was the fact that they could actually be done in a phrase or even one or two sentences. Leopold generalizes Darwin s writings and the extended paradigm. Leopold states that all ethic s so far evolved rest upon a single premise: that the individual is a member of a community of interdependent parts (Leopold, 2013). Callicott explains that this basic phrase comes up again in The Land Ethic multiple times. This theory provides a link of the community concept that all plants, animals, and birds are interconnected with earth other. (Callicott, 2012) The second thing that Callicott discussed is that Leopold departs from contemporary philosophical ethics paradigms and patterns. The Land Ethic follows the paradigm that was constructed by Charles Elton, but the fact is that the writings follow more in line with that of F. E. Clements and S.A. Forbes paradigm. Leopold states that there are the same repeated paradoxes, man versus the biotic citizen, land the slave versus the collective organism . The focus on death and health of ... • 3. Censorship Laws At The Time Of Release Sound s importance is often overlooked in film, it s either completely ignored or relegated to a minor status. This is surprising as sound can have such an impact on the audience s emotions and can mold their reactions. The scene I have chosen to analyse is the shower scene from the much discussed 1960 Hitchcock film Psycho. Censorship laws at the time of release were so strict, Hitchcock had to disturb in other ways without actually revealing too much visually, one main technique was through the use of sound. A particular positive outcome from harsh censorship laws, was the inventive and resourceful approach that writers and directors used to get around them that ultimately lead to the end result being more interesting to watch and much more memorable. If Herrmann s terror inducing score had not been present, this scene would be much less powerful. Due to the fast paced cuts, if there was no music, the sound differences would be much more noticeable cutting from shot to shot. Viewing the scene without the music, shows how the violins help to cover up unimpressive sound editing. In this case, music has a vital role of helping the film promote tension throughout. Usually, isolated instruments are used to build up to a key event to increase tension and subconsciously link the idea of vulnerability to the viewers. However in Psycho, composer Bernard Herrmann uses just the sound of the shower leading up to the key moment and then the isolated instruments (violins and cellos) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Human Nature, Our Downfall In a metaphor, the evolution of civilization is in many ways similar to the evolution of flight. A long story made brief both required multiple attempts, before they were able to function sustainably. Just as the engineers in the big firms which produce the machines Airplanes and Helicopters used for flight, are constantly attempting to improve upon their products, we as members of our respective societies are always looking for better, faster and cheaper ways to sustain ourselves. Civilizationrequires three main materials if you will; Politics the role of the state and political organization, the spokesperson promoting the idea that might is right, Economics the production, exchange and economic organization of society. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... P.2). This becomes more obvious with the rise of global issues such as, global warming. We demand so much out of this planet, take so much for granted, and care so much for our self interests, yet we fail to consider the health of our home the earth, which is irreplaceable. The green house effect takes place when carbon dioxide is over present in the atmosphere (carbon dioxide traps solar energy heating the atmosphere). As Godrej points out, a vital component of human advancement since industrialization began, aided by greed, is throwing the system off balance. By burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) to supply our power and manufacturing needs and to drive our cars, were adding over six billion tons of carbon to the atmosphere each year (Godrej p.18) adding the chopping down of forests continues unabated, diminishing the earths ability to soak up carbon. The effects of carbon build up or the greenhouse effect are not yet fully known, however, what we do know is that the longer this issue persists, the less likely it can be resolved, as is suggested in the Godrej reading we are reaching a tipping point. The political realm of civilization is strongly influenced by capitalism. The political realm is an arena in which elected officials represent the interests of particular groups within societies. The political realm of society comes from the necessary, though very slow and gradual, consequence of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Film Of A Passage Of India The biggest obstacle any movie director must face is trying to please a critical audience. It is especially difficult if the movie they are producing is based on a popular novel, such as E. M. Forster s, A Passage to India. Each reader has their own perspective of what the characters are supposed to be like and it is the director s job to try their hardest to please everyone and give an accurate representation of the text. David Lean did a fantastic job with his casting decisions for his 1984 film version of A Passage to India. In fact, Lean manages to clarify the novels intentions. The characterization in David Lean s film of A Passage to India mirrors the novel s original intentions and provides even more depth to the characters. At the heart of the novel is Dr. Aziz a kind hearted Indian man who just wants to prove that Indians can be friends with British people. When he meets Mrs. Moore in the mosque for the first time he is pleased to see that the British can be understanding and kind. He is excited, much more by the knowledge that someone sympathized with them... his heart began to glow secretly. Presently is burst into speech. You understand me, you know what others feel. Oh, if others resembled you! (21). After this first promising encounter with a Brit, Aziz becomes even more eager to earn the approval and friendship of more British people. • 7. The Importance Of Racial Differences 1.How and when did you became aware of racial difference, what was the context of that realization, ang what transitions you have gone through since your early recognition of racial differences. Most part of my life was spend in Cameroon ( Africa). Racial differences was never an issues. We never talk about race differences, but tribal differences. While some tribes claim to be the dominant tribe others feel they are being marginalized due systemic corruption. For instance the government influential persons like, the Governors, minister, divisional officers etc. would employed and pass out opportunities only to people from their tribes. If by chance or some reason one happens to be employed in that department, one is likely to experience the tribal differences. However, as an African, at the age of 12, we learned about slave trades; Particularly which tribe was responsible for capturing other tribe members, what techniques they used, how they were categorized, how much they were worth but interestingly, how they were transported and treated at their destination. Although there was relieved to know that, slave trade has been abolished but the incident still stigmatized us and elevated our anger towards the betraying tribes. Before coming to America, I know that African American are called niggers , a racial slur used derogatorily towards people of color. Learning about slave trade at the age 12, was when I became aware of racial differences, Although it has been difficult to grasp the understanding or to put into perspective how white people the slave master were treating slaves particularly Africans, but there is more anger towards the betraying tribes, who were the dominant and privileged tribe at that time. Coming from an egalitarian point of view slave trade was sinful and odious but most disgusting are those who sold their own people, knowing fully well what their fate would be and for something insignificant. Some of the things that the were use during trade by barter was pathetic; human beings were exchange for clothes, ammunition, furniture etc. However, even with the anger towards the betraying tribes, good came out of their action, for instance, most African America have a better life ... People who are homeless are unable to acquire and maintain regular, safe, secure housing. It has been a problem for a long time but it has become a social issue from the past few decades. People think about homelessness as one s personal problem and seek them to face it. Moreover, the majority of the people think that the only reason behind being homelessnessis their choice and just laziness to do any work and lead to a better life. But that s just one incomplete perception about the homelessness. There are many reasons behind the homelessness of the people such as unemployment, poverty, lack of resources, mental sickness, physically injured, addiction issues and a lot more then these. It has many effects on the person without a place to stay. The important of all is that their health is completely comprised as they have been living in unhygienic environment which can lead to a lot of health issues in the future for them. But the owners do not have the workers best interests in mind because they want to produce wealth by any means. Engine 6, a 36 gauge 8 18 D 74 mogul built in October of 1891 by the Burnham, Williams Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as construction number 12288 for the Surry, Sussex, and Southampton Railway/Surry Lumber Co. of Virginia and currently owned by the Midwest Central Railroad, is no exception to this rule. Engine 6 is currently vital and has been vital to the Midwest Central Railroad s operation since 1960, being used as one of the two main engines for many years. Though, one must remember that this locomotive was restored in a time before the internet; a time before many of the resources we use in the heritage railway industry today were widely known about or readily available. It is now that Laura rolls out a transitory improvement. Jim makes her feel so comfortable, he ask her to dance and even gives her a kiss. His intentions were to give her the confidence she needs to function in the outside world. This, unfortunately, all comes crashing down, because it is revealed that he is engaged. • 17. RNA World Hypothesis Essay RNA world hypothesis is a hypothesis to explain the origins of cells. According to the theory, a form of RNA, or ribonucleic acid, developed that was capable of self replicating. It is said to be the earliest life forms, from which all other organisms come. While modern organisms are built up from proteins, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and RNA, this organism is said to have consisted only of DNA. The reason scientists believe RNA was the first biomolecular structure is because it stores information in a similar role to DNA, but at the same time acts as a catalyst in some reactions, like protein. Catalysts accelerate the rate of reactions necessary to metabolize, or balance a cell. Essentially, RNA fulfills some roles of DNA and protein, thus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For one thing, prebiotic Earth did not have favorable conditions for the formation of nucleotides by any means. One such problem is that nucleotides require a phosphate group to link, which is implausible to have occurred naturally without life The hazardous conditions of prebiotic Earth would also be constantly damaging and denaturing chemicals forming into RNA and traces of RNA, making it implausible for the RNA to cluster and begin replicating, as well as survive. Ribose likely would not be very sustainable within the early world, with the likely possibility of hydrolysis as one of many factors. Since its conception in the 60 s, RNA world hypothesis has seen numerous discoveries and possibilities. As recently as 2011, there were RNA components found in meteorites such as guanine and adenine. This implies RNA may have come from space. Glycolaldehyde has been found in a distant star system, which is necessary to form RNA, and further backs the idea of extraterrestrial origins of life. Scientists have also tried to support the hypothesis with claims that RNA was the source of life as we know it, but other nucleic acids were the predecessor to RNA. One such suspect is peptide nucleic acid (PNA). Conclusive research behind such claims has yet to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. What Is The Truth-Belief-Belief Conceptual Analysis Of... In this paper, I will discuss the truth belief justification conceptual analysis of knowledge, which I will refer to as TBJ, Gettier cases, and an example that refutes TBJ. Conceptual analysis is an analysis of a proposition P with given premises to acquire knowledge of that P. The truth belief justification analysis of knowledge fails to provide sufficient conditions for someone to possess knowledge. For a condition to be necessary, it has to be satisfied to have knowledge of a proposition. If a condition is sufficient, then the person x will have some information to know something about proposition P. Jointly sufficient conditions are conditions that all need to be satisfied together to have knowledge about some P. They are necessary and supposedly jointly sufficient, but Gettier cases prove that extra conditions on top of TBJ are required to be jointly sufficient. The TBJ analysis identifies three conditions that are necessary and supposedly jointly sufficient for some person x to know some proposition P. Truthindicates that the proposition P has to be true. The truth needs to correspond to some true fact that relates to the world, such as that the Earth is round. It is necessary because a proposition P can only be deduced by factual evidence shown to x. However, truth by itself is not sufficient because truth itself is just a random fact. In addition, the person, x, needs to hold some sort of beliefin their proposition P. If you do not believe in a proposition P, then it cannot be known, since you will not have any grounds on which to base your knowledge of that P. It is a necessary condition since you can only know what you believe . However, it is not a sufficient condition by itself because a belief is just x s opinion of a subject. Finally, the person, x s belief has to be accompanied by observations from their senses, prior knowledge, or deductive reasoning, which in effect, explains what the justification is. This may come from what people may see with their eyes, or forming a conclusion from previously assumed premises. Justification is a necessary condition because the allegedly known beliefs have to be adequately justified. Fallibility of justification is assumed since no justification can ... Most researchers in the education industry come from the non profit sector and often criticize for profit institutions as wrong doers. Researchers hold that for profit institutions sell degrees, misrepresent and deceive their students leading to defaulted student loans and an on going defrauding of the federal government. • 20. Raising The Minimum Wage Is A Bad Idea In announcing his wrongheaded proposal to increase the minimum wage to $9 an hour, President Obama spoke in lofty terms: In the wealthiest nation on Earth, he said in his State of the Union address last month, no one who works full time should have to live in poverty. If the debate proceeds as it has many times in the past, then most Democrats will embrace the president s message and back the proposal, while most Republicans will oppose it, on the grounds that higher labor costs will lead to higher unemployment. But we shouldn t rely on political opinions in this debate. Facts clearly demonstrate that raising the minimum wage is a bad idea. The case against raising the minimum wage is straightforward: A higher wage makes it more expensive for firms to hire workers. How big an effect does this have on the job market? Economists debate this. But no one argues that increasing the minimum wage increases the number of unemployed workers who find jobs. In the end, the trade off is clear. People who keep their jobs get more money; those who lose their jobs, or fail to get new ones, suffer. In announcing his proposal to increase the minimum wage, the president argued that doing so would alleviate poverty. The president is certainly correct to turn his attention to the poor, many of whom have been suffering for years in a tough economy. And it is clearly desirable for households that engage in full time work not to live in poverty. But increasing the minimum wage would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I was invited to help work on a case involving a woman and her son fleeing from South Africa due to facial scarring on the first born child. After a meeting with several members of our legal team, I reached out to the caseworker and asked if there was anything extra I could do to help their case. She asked that I try to find more evidence to support the claim that facial scarring was still going on in the village the family was from. After spending days researching the area the village was in, I was able to find other accounts of facial scarring. Because of my extra efforts that helped her case, I was invited to attend the hearing at the High Court. This opportunity was incredible and overwhelming and I know this was only a fraction of the work that you have to go through to be granted asylum. • 23. Summary Of To A Louse By Robert Burns Robert Burns wrote the poem To a Louse in 1786, in Scotland, that emphasizes the social constructs of man and as well as man s vanity. Burns then goes on in further detail to explain the artificial concept of social class and perspective of the individual in society. He does this by describing one day sitting in church where he is behind gorgeous young noble woman while a louse is crawling upon her silken bonnet. The lady is completely oblivious to the fact that the louse is upon her bonnet while everyone sitting in the pews nearby point and wink with one another at the appearance of the louse. Through this ridiculous and humorous poem Burns is highlighting the vanity of human nature and the artificial construct of social classthrough his own eyes that he is seeing in eighteenth century Scotland. In the poem, the reader finds Burns sitting in his pew in church where he notices a louse, a small wingless insect sometimes called lice or fleas, crawling upon the bonnet of a young and elegant lady in the seat in front of him. At this point in the poem Burns is surprised that the louse would dare set his feet upon such a fine lady rather than that of a beggar or vagabond in the streets, where a louse would normally be found. Here Burns then goes on to describe the louse as Detested, shunn d, by saunt (saint) an sinner and more usually associated with the likes of the lower class, such as beggars and slaves, and not the upper class from which the lady is from, according to The Bard: Robert Burns, a Biography by Robert Crawford. Burns then begins to admire the bravado and courage of the louse as he makes the trek up the noble lady s bonnet. Where Burns then turns his attention to the elegant lady whom he calls Jenny. Which he then tells her not to shake her head in an air of pride as she is completely unaware of the humorous effect that the sight of the louse has upon all of the people nearby. As Burns watches those around him take notice of this spectacle in front of him he wishes that the supreme power of God would give us the ability to see ourselves as others see us. There are billions of dollars that developed countries give to the developing countries to say that they are helping the poor and that they are bring the poor countries up out of the dirt. • 26. Why Is Uranus Unique Uranus Uranus is a very a very unique planet. It s different because of its tilt, color and a somewhat different surface. Uranus is different than other planets in our solar system. It does have a tilt, odd color and a different surface, but why? Technically there isn t a surface to uranus. If anyone tried to land on the surface of uranus the spacecraft would sink through and fall down to the planet s icy core. The reason for this os because the planet is made up of mainly hydrogen and helium making it a gas planet. At the core of the planet there are water like elements, such as methane and ammonia. The planet is referred to as the ice giant because of the temperatures. This planet is also blue because the methane in Uranus upper atmosphere takes in the red light from the Sun and then reflects the light absorbed back into space. This is why Uranus appears to be blue. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Uranus lies 98 degrees off of its normal axes. A normal planet is off by 30В°s at most. The reason why Uranus is so cold is because it s 1.784 billion miles away from the sun. Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun it is right after saturn. The statues in this scene represent Juliet as a goddess and that she is very important, this is a key fact to remember in Romeo s eyes. This version is different to the text as Juliet does not say her famous lines from the balcony, but comes down from her room to the pool outside, where she recites her lines with passion thinking of her dear Romeo. He uses many manipulative patterns and persuasive techniques that help him succeed in his wooing of both women. As the both of the wooing is done by Richard himself there are many similarities, nevertheless many differences as the first wooing is to the woman in person and second wooing is wooing the daughter through her mother. The main difference between the two scenes are that Richard intended to be king in Act 1 Scene 2 and already is king in Act 4 Scene 4. This may be seen as a disadvantage in the wooing of Anne as he has no power, therefore cannot offer it and as an advantage in the wooing of Elizabeth as he can offer power as Elizabeth has lost her power when her husband died. So even though at first she is determined not to give in, the thought of gaining power changes her mind. Anne, however, is needlessly of power and only gets persuaded due to Richard s flattery techniques. As both women are in anger with him, they are prepared to kill him. However, Richard having power can be a disadvantage for Elizabeth because if she kills him it will be a treason which is much worse than Anne killing him when he is not king as it will only be classified as a murder. I believe the story does have meaning, but that the meaning lies deeper than what most believe. The disney version of A Christmas Carol, featuring Jim Carrey, and the book written by Charles Dickens are both about Ebenezer Scroogeturning his life around for the better. The book and movie have many similarities. One similarity would be that Scrooge is shown to be a monster until the end when he proves himself otherwise. By doing this, the story shows that no matter how bad people believe you are, don t be afraid to change because it is never to late. Although the book and movie have some similarities they also have differences. One difference would include the movie started with Marley being placed in a coffin. Every author has unique characteristics about him/her that make one poet different from another, but what cause Emily Dickinson to be so unique are not only the words she writes, but how she writes them. Her style of writing is in a category of its own. To understand how and why she writes the way she does, her background has to be brought into perspective. The controversy surrounding Emily Dickinson is her odd lifestyle and her tendencies to be somewhat of a recluse. She is sometimes considered abnormal because she does things differently from most others. She spends much of her life dressed in white and withdrawn from much of society. Of course, her peers take this negatively, but what they do not understand is that her being so private is more of a meditation to her, instead of a hiding. She just wants to escape the pressures she feels are normally required of women. She does not want to be a servant to sick and elderly. She feels she has more potential for her mind to grow, and those obligations would just be hindrances to her writing (McQuade 1255). Her childhood and her staying out of society as an adult, along with many other aspects known and not known, influence her poems and the style in which she goes about writing the works. Her techniques of writing are completely different from any other writer, whether prose or poetry. Dickinson composes her phrases by marking them off with a dash, placing a space before and after. This small maneuver places more emphasis on her impress of the mind in its analysis of experience (McQuade 1256). Her slant thymes and unique form of expression produces more of an oddness to the audience. One of Emily Dickinson s unique forms of writing is her excessive use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Four major justices, Rehnquist, Stewart, Burger, and Stevens, voted against the minority admission program for all school because it violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The other four justices, Marshall, Brennan, White, and Blackmun, voted that the affirmative action is acceptable within certain areas. However, the plurality opinion was given by Justice Powell. This gave the ruling a 5 4 in favor of Allan Bakke. Powell gave his opinion that the using racial quotas as the deciding factor of one s admission was violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. However, affirmative action is permissible by Universities but only if used alongside with other factors. This meant that Universities had to discontinue their quota system for minorities and that UC Davis violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. Under these circumstances Allan Bakke was allowed to attend UC Davis. Examples Of Reflection Essay Reflection Essay At the end of August as I started my first semester in English 99 I was a different person who had a fixed mindset and thought I would never be able to correctly structure or organize an essay. Looking back, at my progress, I definitely know I am more than ready for English 100. I have incorporated many of the strategies I recently learned throughout the course of the semester to improve both my in class and out of class essay. To start off with I enhanced my introduction on both essays expanding the main idea in my thesis and thoroughly answering the prompt question. I also, changed a few of my word choices, because most of them did not specify or convey my thoughts clearly. Now, for my evidence as I referred back to previous reading selections I correctly formated my quotes placing quotation marks and commas in the right place as well as paraphrasing key concepts into 25 words or less in only one sentence to explain a chosen quote. Many rearrangements were made in my body paragraphs where I would start my ideas but not finish my analysis. Adding examples either from experience or any related ideas, made both my essays so much better and more coherent. Lastly, I appended much more information to wrap up my conclusions, since they were not straightforward or neither restate my thesis statement. For my reading and writing processes I have learned ample techniques to become better and more successful in each and every unit, especially the very last one, The Dark Side of Happiness, by June Gruber, because of its intricate and complex key points it was a challenging reading. Coming from High School where teachers do not exemplify any techniques caused me to be uncomfortable with rigorous and demanding readings like this (The Dark Side of Happiness.) I can now say my understanding of how important it is to read and write grew profoundly. I have never really considered myself a great reader, since I do not enjoy reading, but knowing how to dissect, go under the surface, and more in depth in each reading influenced my perception. I was then introduced to brainstorming as well, a method used most often to express your thoughts and ideas without them being right. In addition, knowing how to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
