A typed journal from WWI passed on through generations fuels a young man's dreams of time travel and allows us to explore the power of personal stories and photos. Together with archival collections, these items take us through space and time, and the magical ability of cultural memory institutions to help individuals bring these incredibly compelling dreams to life. The World Wide Web provides the cultural, technological, and legal frameworks to open the doors to innovation and imagination, and also enables libraries, archives and museums the world over to play a critical role. We explore some of the diverse efforts to bring stories and memory to life in new ways, while also fostering open data and preservation, and the pros and cons at the intersection of public domain and private enterprise.

20170908 digital dreams_some_lessons_learned_from_projects_that_explore_the_p...PACKED vzw
Some lessons learnt from projects that explore the possibilities of the Wikimedia platforms - Research indicates that the sources mostly used by non-professional information seekers to find factual information are Google and Wikipedia. Only a small percentage of information seekers still goes directly to traditional knowledge centres as libraries, archives and museum to find the information that they are looking. This situation forces knowledge centres to look for new ways to provide access to their collections and thus create value for their collection and institutional activities. A possible solution is the use of digital technology and a collaboration with third-party platforms to facilitate the access and (re)use of their information.
This presentation presents some lessons learnt from projects that explore the possibilities of the Wikimedia platforms for memory institutions: sharing your authority with others, collaborating with the (Wikimedia) community and using technical platforms that are beyond your control. All projects were initiated by PACKED vzw in collaboration with Wikimedia Netherlands, Wikimedia België and a group of museums in Flanders.

Presentation description:
Since the mid-2000s, cultural institutions around the world have worked together with Wikimedia volunteers in hundreds of collaboration projects. In these GLAM-Wiki projects, cultural organizations make their collections and specialized knowledge more widely accessible via the free encyclopedia Wikipedia and the free media repository Wikimedia Commons. In the past five years, Wikidata (Wikimedia's free, multilingual knowledge base) has gained a lot of influence in this area as well. As a very accessible and re-usable structured data and semantic web project, it has become a popular instrument for cultural institutions to publish collections as Linked Open Data, obtain multilingual data, place their collections in a much broader context, and enrich their collections with crowdsourced metadata. In 2017-19, Wikimedia Commons is also enhanced with structured data from Wikidata, with much improved APIs that make more smooth collaboration in GLAM-Wiki projects possible.
This keynote presentation provides a short overview of GLAM-Wiki collaborations and their impact, with special attention for the potential and use of Linked Open Data via Wikidata and via structured data on Wikimedia Commons. It includes examples of GLAM-Wiki projects by audiovisual archives and collections around the world.
Europeana Awareness year 2 review slides for Workpackage 2 'End-user engagement'Johan Oomen
General information on the project: http://pro.europeana.eu/web/europeana-awareness
Scope of this presentation: following the success of the first year, WP2 continued to deliver results in this reporting period. Overall progress for this year has been good, with no major deviations from the work plan. The content gathering campaigns for Europeana 1914-1918 were successful, both in terms of public engagement and content added as well as audience reach.
This year also saw the launch of the Europeana 1989 campaign, aiming to create a digital archive of memorabilia connected to the fall of the Iron Curtain. Besides the objects that were gathered, the campaign provided important insights into the challenges of managing a campaign which deals with more recent events. These lessons have been documented and will be taken on board in future campaigns.
The collaboration with the Wikipedia community was launched in January and continued throughout the year. A great variety of events were organized as part of the project, including an ambitious international photo competition “Wiki Loves Public Monuments.” As one of the results, a strategic plan for future collaboration between the two communities (Europeana Network and the Wikipedia community) was written in December.
Talk titled 'User-centred and Participatory Cartography'
Interest in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has been part of Geographical Information Science (GIScience) and cartography for a long time. Even before the term Geographical Information System (GIS) was invented (Tomlinson, 1967), researchers of “Man Machine Interaction” at MIT where utilising the display capabilities of the latest generation of computers to manipulate oceanic geographical information (Pivar at al., 1963). From this early start, HCI became an integral part of Cartography and GIScience research agendas. Interest focused on expert cartographers and their work in the 1960s and 1970s, and moved to wider range of specialised users in the 1980s and 1990s. This followed the spread of geographic technologies to wider audiences, culminating with the ‘Cambrian Explosion’ of maps on the internet. More recently, with the increased abilities of members of the public to create and share information, cartography became available to many, sometimes under the guise of ‘neogeography’. The talk with cover the evolution of HCI research in Cartography, focusing on participatory GIS and mapping, and demonstrating the importance of user centred design in the sharing of maps within this domain. It ends with examples of citizen science and how cartography play a role within it.
Using Web Archives for Studying Cultural Heritage Collaborative PlatformsMarta Severo
In the last few years, cultural institutions have launched several experiments in order to transform their registers into transparent, open and participative documents available on the web. All these platforms introduce new ways of collaborative management of cultural heritage through the creation of participative pages corresponding to the inventory records directly on Wikipedia or on ad hoc platforms. This communication aims at studying these new forms of collaborative management of cultural heritage based on the use of wiki platforms. Past studies on this topic are organized mainly around two poles: analyses of computer and technical solutions, on the one hand, and researches on changes in the relationship between institutions and publics, on the other hand. Differently, this study is meant to focus on cultural heritage and notably on the collaborative digital writing around heritage objects that take shape on the web. Our ideal goal would be to study, through a historical perspective, how cultural heritage objects included in these inventories have evolved in the last few years as an effect of their opening on the web through wiki platforms. The objects will not be considered in relation to the inventory record, but as digital objects resulting from the editorialization processes involving heritage professionals, but also other users of the web.

Presentation "The role of Wikipedia and its community in cultural production and in supporting the heritage sector " by Iolanda Pensa for the conference "Heritage Commons: Towards a participative heritage governance in the third millennium”, session "Digital technology as an enabler, for new narratives of heritage, new ways of supporting heritage as a collective resource, and new means of increasing access to heritage and developing new audiences”, Royal Palace of the Venaria Reale, Turin, Italy, 24 settembre 2014.
With 500 million readers, 30 million articles in 280 languages and around 80,000 contributors, Wikipedia is a powerful and existing tool to increase access to heritage and to support heritage as a collective resource. Wikipedia online communities are already active in creating encyclopedic knowledge for everyone: they produce texts, images and translations, they respect copyright, they support institutions in providing open content for Wikipedia, and they have engaged with the contest Wiki Loves Monuments over 15’000 participants in 50 countries to produce 900,000 images documenting cultural heritage. Wikipedia recognizes the value of culture and it is an ally in heritage development; governments and institutions can play a key role in facilitating volunteer contributions with authorizations and freedom of panorama, and in acknowledging the value of this active citizenship supporting the heritage sector.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
