These are the *updated* slides (InnoDB clusters and MySQL Enterprise Monitor 3.4 are now GA) from the following webinar, which you can now watch on demand:
https://www.mysql.com/news-and-events/web-seminars/why-mysql-high-availability-matters/
-----------------------------------------------------
MySQL high availability matters because your data matters. If your database goes down, whether due to human error, catastrophic network failure, or planned maintenance, the accessibility and accuracy of your data can be compromised with disastrous results. We'll examine the critical elements of a high availability solution, including:
- Data redundancy
- Data consistency
- Automatic fault detection and resolution
- No single point of failure
And how you can achieve these things more easily than ever before using MySQL's new native HA solution.
MySQL InnoDB cluster provides a complete high availability solution for MySQL.
MySQL Shell includes AdminAPI which enables you to easily configure and administer a group of at least three MySQL server instances to function as an InnoDB cluster.
Each MySQL server instance runs MySQL Group Replication, which provides the mechanism to replicate data within InnoDB clusters, with built-in failover.
MySQL Router can automatically configure itself based on the cluster you deploy, connecting client applications transparently to the server instances.
The Software as a Service or SaaS market is large and growing. Demands of 24/7 availability, high performance, back-up, security, affordability, scalability, manageability, audit ability and easy integration when delivering your product and or service to your customers, are business challenges which we will address in this presentation. By demonstrating MySQL’s proven ability in this area, we will show how we can help new and seasoned SaaS vendors.
Today the terms "Big Data" and "Internet of Things" draw a lot of attention, but behind the hype there's a simple story. For decades, companies have been making business decisions based on traditional "enterprise data". Beyond that critical data, however, is a potential treasure trove of additional data: weblogs, social media, email, sensors, photographs and much more that can be mined for useful information. More and more organizations are therefore looking to include non-traditional yet potentially very valuable data with their traditional enterprise data in their business intelligence analysis.
As the world's most popular open source database, and the leading open source database for Web-based and Cloud-based applications, MySQL is a key component of numerous big data platforms. This presentation explores how you can unlock extremely valuable insights using MySQL with the Hadoop platform.

MySQL Replication Performance Tuning for Fun and Profit!Vitor Oliveira
MySQL Replication, in addition to bringing high-availability, is the foundation to build high-performance MySQL database systems. Using read scale-out and sharding one can design systems that go from the capacity of a single server to supporting the largest internet sites. But to design and operate high-performance, efficient, manageable and reliable deployments requires knowing the intricacies of the underlying technologies.
This session will provide insights on the main factors that affect the performance of Asynchronous Replication and Group Replication, and how to configure them to make the most out of the underlying computing system. It will also show the latest developments in MySQL 5.7 and 8.0, in areas spanning from group communication to the multi-threaded slave applier, and how effective they are in helping meet the performance requirements in terms of throughput, latency and durability to support the most demanding workload types.
Starting with MySQL 5.7.12 we introduced a new plugin to use MySQL as a Document Store. This presentation gives an overview of current features and plans going forward.
MySQL offers several new functionality to enhance security and make MySQL suitable for critical environments. Several add-ons help achieving regulatory compliance like PCI-DSS. Here is an overview of these features.

Upgrading MySQL databases do not come without risk. There is no guarantee that no problems will happen if you move to a new major MySQL version.
Should we just upgrade and rollback immediately if problems occur? But what if these problems only happen a few days after migrating to this new version?
You might have a database environment that is risk-adverse, where you really have to be sure that this new MySQL version will handle the workload properly.
Examples:
- Both MySQL 5.6 and 5.7 have a lot of changes in the MySQL Optimizer. It is expected that this improves performance of my queries, but is it really the case? What if there is a performance regression? How will this affect my database performance?
- Also, there are a lot of incompatible changes which are documented in the release notes, how do I know if I'm affected by this in my workload? It's a lot to read..
- Can I go immediately from MySQL 5.5 to 5.7 and skip MySQL 5.6 even though the MySQL documentation states that this is not supported?
- Many companies have staging environments, but is there a QA team and do they really test all functionality, under a similar workload?
This presentation will show you a process, using open source tools, of these types of migrations with a focus on assessing risk and fixing any problems you might run into prior to the migration.
This process can then be used for various changes:
- MySQL upgrades for major version upgrades
- Switching storage engines
- Changing hardware architecture
Additionally, we will describe ways to do the actual migration and rollback with the least amount of downtime.

Such automatic orchestration of MySQL servers results in a fault-tolerant replicated state machine providing a highly available MySQL data store.
Java MySQL Connector & Connection Pool Features & OptimizationKenny Gryp
This talk will give an overview of the different available Java MySQL connectors (Connector/J, MariaDB Java Connector) and connection pools (Commons-DBCP, C3P0, ...).
One of the things with the default configuration of these solutions is that they are very chatty. This can have a noticeable impact on application performance and database load. I've seen many environments where over 50% of the total amount of queries are caused by such behavior. This behavior will be explained through examples seen on production systems as well as recommendations on optimization will be made.
Load balancing and transparent failover solutions will be described for both MySQL's traditional asynchronous replication and Galera based replication (Percona XtraDB Cluster or MariaDB Galera Cluster).

A New Architecture for Group Replication in Data GridEditor IJCATR
Nowadays, grid systems are vital technology for programs running with high performance and problems solving with largescale
in scientific, engineering and business. In grid systems, heterogeneous computational resources and data should be shared
between independent organizations that are scatter geographically. A data grid is a kind of grid types that make relations computational
and storage resources. Data replication is an efficient way in data grid to obtain high performance and high availability by saving
numerous replicas in different locations e.g. grid sites. In this research, we propose a new architecture for dynamic Group data
replication. In our architecture, we added two components to OptorSim architecture: Group Replication Management component
(GRM) and Management of Popular Files Group component (MPFG). OptorSim developed by European Data Grid projects for
evaluate replication algorithm. By using this architecture, popular files group will be replicated in grid sites at the end of each
predefined time interval.

OpenStack Days East -- MySQL Options in OpenStackMatt Lord
In most production OpenStack installations, you want the backing metadata store to be highly available. For this, the de facto standard has become MySQL+Galera. In order to help you meet this basic use case even better, I will introduce you to the brand new native MySQL HA solution called MySQL Group Replication. This allows you to easily go from a single instance of MySQL to a MySQL service that's natively distributed and highly available, while eliminating the need for any third party library and implementations.
If you have an extremely large OpenStack installation in production, then you are likely to eventually run into write scaling issues and the metadata store itself can become a bottleneck. For this use case, MySQL NDB Cluster can allow you to linearly scale the metadata store as your needs grow. I will introduce you to the core features of MySQL NDB Cluster--which include in-memory OLTP, transparent sharding, and support for active/active multi-datacenter clusters--that will allow you to meet even the most demanding of use cases with ease.

Getting Started with MySQL Full Text SearchMatt Lord
Many applications today require the ability to quickly and efficiently search through large amounts of unstructured text. For example, your e-commerce application requires the ability to search through product titles, descriptions, manuals and reviews. Or your internal CMS requires the ability to search through document contents within your system. In this presentation we'll review what Full Text Search is in general, and subsequently how it works and is used within MySQL specifically.
I would strongly recommend that you check out the on-demand webinar, as I go into the details that are missing from the slide deck alone:

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work.
