PDHPE is one of six key learning areas in primary school education in NSW. It teaches physical activity and personal development skills. PDHPE promotes an active lifestyle through daily physical activity, which improves health by enhancing cardiovascular fitness, bone development, weight control, mental health, and disease resistance. It also supports social and emotional growth as students learn self-confidence, self-esteem, relationships, cooperation, communication, and understanding themselves and others. Additionally, PDHPE teaches students to identify unsafe situations and strategies to protect themselves.

1. Why is PDHPE important
for our children?
Personal development, health and physical education is one of the
six KLAs for primary school education in NSW. PDHPE
combines several separate components of the syllabus. PDHPE
not only practices the teaching of physical activity but is also
concerned with the personal development of students.

2. Physical activity/active lifestyles
Students need to participate in physical activity
EVERYDAY for atleast 30minutes. An active lifestyle
is essential for students from k – 6 to develop and
maintain optimum health. Students are encouraged
to participate in regular physical activity for it
• Improves cardiovascular efficiency and reduces
risks of coronary heart disease.
• Enhances bone development
• Controls obesity
• Improves psychological health
• Enhances immune status

3. Social development
From the years k through to 6
students go through many changes
these being Physical, social,
emotional and congnitive. It is
essential for the students to have
positive feelings of self- confidence,
self – esteem and self acceptance.
Students must hold the ability to act
in the best interest of themselves
and of others. It is important that
the students understand the
uniqueness of their own personal
development and of the life
changes which nature controls.

4. Relationships
Positive interactions with others makes for positive
relationships. PDHPE not only practices these positive
relationships but relies on them for a successful lesson.
PDHPE demonstrates these relationships through team
work during sport. These relationships skills are
demonstrated through
• Communication during games
• Encouraging others
• Sharing
• Cooperating
