This document discusses the intersection of free software and feminism. It notes that while around 2200 women gathered at AWID Forum 2008 to discuss empowerment, only about 1.1% of free and open source software developers are women. It explores some of the reasons for this, such as stereotyping in schools that steers girls away from computing and challenges in male-dominated fields. The document argues that contributions beyond just coding, like documentation, are undervalued in free software development yet are important for quality and usability. Broadening what is considered development could help make free software communities more inclusive of women.
