Frank Lloyd Wright s Fallingwater House
In the vast mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania lies Fallingwater; an architectural
phenomenon nestled among the rocks of the Laurel Highlands. The house that was supposed to
give the residents a view of the waterfall, hangs over it instead, making the waterfall a part of the
structure within the house. It was designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wrightin 1935 as a
private residence and weekend home for Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr. a department store owner from
Pittsburgh, and his family. Built during one of America s darkest times for architecture, what is
now known as America s Most Popular House, became a symbol of hope and was a turning point
in Wright s career. The Fallingwaterhouse is a national landmark because it revived architecture...

However, over the past 80 years, the materials used have shown signs of deterioration, just as
organic elements in nature would. This is mostly due to the exposure to a range of different climate
conditions in Southwest Pennsylvania such as humidity, sunlight, and severe freeze thaw. Almost
from the start, preservation and maintenance efforts began to preserve the home in order to protect
an American legacy and to allow future generations to appreciate and enjoy Wright s masterpiece.
Today, an expert team of conservators, museum professionals, and historic preservation specialists

Ancient Ghana Essay
Introduction
The people of Ancient Ghana were known as Soninke. The Soninke were the subgroup of Mande
speaking ethnic group. Ancient Ghana was one of Africa s hot spots for trading. This trade
growth lead to them to be one of the greatest empires in Africa. Location plays a key point to why
they were extremely successful, they were placed south of the Saharan desert and northwest of the
Niger River, quite a humid area. Ancient Ghana were the middle man to some other trading
countries. One of their trades, gold, was discovered in the 9th Century and it came in vast
quantities. After the discovery of gold, Ancient Ghana expanded, King of Gold is what Ghana

A benefit for paying taxes. The second tax, known as production tax, this tax applied to gold.
Every single piece of solid gold in Ancient Ghana was owned by the king. Gold dust though
could be used by the traders for trading. With the trading of gold dust, it would boost the demand
for it and the price would go up, the king believed. Although people traded in the cities, silent
bartering also took place. One merchant would leave example 1 pound of gold and another
merchant would take that and leave behind one pound of salt. A system of trade that surprisingly
worked.

How Personal Responsibility Will Lead to My Success Essay
How Personal Responsibility Will Lead to My Success
Personal responsibility means to me holding yourself accountable for not only the successes in
your life but also your downfalls. If a person can do this they will not only be successful in their
education but in their careers and life in general. Even though some people who lack personal
responsibility do just fine in life, personal responsibility will lead to my success in and beyond
school because it gives me the confidence to succeed, and will lead to a better life for my family
and me.
Now as to my approach for this paper I am writing this essay according to The Descriptive Essay

Personal responsibility also gives myself no one else, or anything else to blame for my short
comings when my procrastination comes up to bite me in the butt. Procrastination is still a
major factor I am working on improving day to day. It has always been something that I have
had to make a conscious effort to avoid and improve upon. If I am able to conquer that downfall
I believe there is nothing that will be able to stop me in gaining my degree and moving onto a
career that I will love to do. Another effect of being personally responsible is that it will lead to
success in my career. The first thing that will contribute to this is that personally responsibility
will have led to my success in school giving myself a foundation to succeed in my career of
choice. The tools that it taught me in school can also be implemented in the work place. Being
able to utilize these same methods that helped in school are an invaluable tool to also being able
to succeed in the workplace, not only in getting a job, but maintaining a job and moving up
within the chosen career path. Lastly personal responsibility will allow me to better provide for
my family giving us a better life. All my previous points about being personally responsible in
school and work all lead into this final point that it will give my family and myself a better more
secure life. Now some people in this world lack personal responsibility and do just fine, but what is

Ethical Arguments For And Against Torture
International conflict has evolved in recent decades from wars among nations to cat and mouse
games of terrorism and counterterrorism between nations and non state factions. National defense
requires the development of reliable intelligence to prevent horrific acts of violence. The U.S.
Central Intelligence Agency s use of enhanced interrogation techniquesto extract information from
suspected terrorists has led to considerable debate of the morality and usefulness of torture. The
moral dilemma asks whether agents of a democratic government should disregard the nation s
founding principles of liberty and the rule of law for the purpose of preventing a potential act of
violenceagainst its citizens. The answer to the moral question has policy implications about the
conduct and costs of national... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This essay will explore the moral arguments for and against torture and the policy implications of
those arguments. The moral defense of torture, however, ultimately rests on unrealistic scenarios
and would require policies that, in themselves, pose ethical challenges. The United States can do
better than resort to torture to protect itself. Torture is condemned by worldwide consensus through
documents such as the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Mappes, Zembaty DeGrazia,
2012, p. 345). Torture involves detaining someone suspected of planning violent acts or who may
know of such plans, thereby violating the individual s right to liberty (p. 384). It is also defined by
extreme interrogation techniques that cause mental or physical pain, such as simulated drowning
or Alan Dershowitz s example of poking sterile needles under fingernails to get information (p. 345).
Generally speaking, ethical theories would condemn torture.

The Effects Of Stigma On Functioning On Bipolar Disorder...
The Impact of Stigma on Functioning in Bipolar Disorder Patients Bipolar disorder, also known
as manic depression, is a mood disorder that requires careful medication management during a
patient s lifetime (Halter, 2014, p. 227). Bipolar disorder is described as recurrent episodes of mood
changes ranging from maniato irritability to depression (Halter, 2014, p. 228). Periods of normal
functioning are also recurrent with mood shifts. Often times bipolar disorder goes undiagnosed for
many years which is linked to undesirable outcomes such as suicide (Halter, 2014, p. 227). On the
other hand, many patients with a definite diagnosis report denying their illness because of the
stigma that is associated with mood disorders (Thome, Dargel, Migliavacca, Potter, Jappur,
Kapczinski, Cereser, 2011) . Perceived stigma is an attribute that devalues or discriminates against a
human being because of their mental illness (Pedneault, 2014). Stigmatizing attitudes can
negatively impact on the patients psychosocial functioning, behavior tendencies and cognitive
function.
Research Appraisal I chose to do an article relating to bipolar disorder patients, because I have
come into contact with numerous patients with both Bipolar I and Bipolar II diagnoses in clinical
this semester and I enjoy speaking with them and listening to their stories. I have witnessed them at
both at high s and low s and I am intrigued to learn about different experiences and stigma that have

Compare And Contrast Samurai And Knights
The Japanese feudal system is hugely different from European system. The Emperor and the and
the Shogun were hugely different because of the Pope. The Emperor and the king were very
different because the emperor only had spiritual power while the king had both spiritual and
political power. While they were very different Daimyo s and Barons were very similar, because
they had both had to supply the Emperor/ King with land, Daimyo s and Barons were both very
high up on the feudal system. Only answering to the King/Shogun. Samurais and Knights were very
similar and unique, they both were highly valuable to the Shoguns/ Kings because of constant
warfare. They also had a Code of Conduct that was greatly affected by Religion. Also instead of
being paid in rice Knights were paid in land. Peasants were also had very similar jobs, although
they had the same jobs Japanese peasants were given a lot more respect and privileges.

Analysis Of The Poem For Whom The Bellstone
The ideas presented in John Donne s poem For Whom the Bell Tolls, heavily contrast the ideas
presented in Paul Simon s song, I Am a Rock. John Donne demonstrates that we are all apart of
humanity and mankind and how all humans have a connection with one another. Paul Simon
contrasts this overall idea by demonstrating that people are sick of society and want to be isolated
from humanity. The information presented by John Donne and Paul Simon are unique, but have
very contrasting ideas as they pertain to humanity.
One clear contrast between the pieces of literature, are two specific lines. In Donne s poem, he
states No man is an island, while Simon states in his song that I am an island. The island represents
the isolation from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Simon uses several phrases to demonstrate the protection built to separate oneself from humanity.
For example, I ve built walls, a fortress deep and mighty that none my peneratre. A person can
choose to build a fortress where they can be safe from attack, safe from pain, and hence never
need to shed any tears. The room that is cozy as a womb becomes a tomb. The heart, given
enough time, will become hard and incapable of any feeling. Simon uses an individual who is
hurt, to showcase the retreat to safety. This is okay for a certain extent of time, but sadly, some
stay inside. They hide in their fortress, like a turtle drawn into its armored shell. John Donne
contrasts this idea using the line A part of the main, and implies everyone is together and how
living in solitude is not living, but only existing.
John Donne s poem demonstrates we all have a role within the world, and our contributions are
never ignored, hence the last line, It tolls for thee, referencing funeral bells. The last line implies
that the bell rings for you, the reader, and how you are acknowledged as a human being and as a
member of society. Paul Simon s song contrasts this idea with the last four lines of the song, I am a
rock, I am an island, and a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries. The song is a declaration of
an individual who was not a rock, but needed people, and had been

Lindsay Lohan
Over my time spent learning about Lohan, I have learned quite a bit about her actions and her
behaviors that lead her to her choices. According to TMZ s (2011) biography on Lindsay, she
started acting when she was ten years of age. This throws her into a very stressful and fast paced
lifestyle at a very young age, which leaves her extremely susceptible to find ways to help control
her stress. The massive amounts of attention from her fans, puts a tremendous burden on her.
Later on in her career, in 2007 she received two DUI s, one ending in an accident. She has had

Protagonist In Hamlet Essay
In every tale, story, novel, or play, there are different types of characters. In the play Hamlet, written
by William Shakespeare, the character Claudius is seen as an antagonist. An antagonist is always
the negative character. Antagonists are known to always go against the protagonist, in this case it is
Hamlet. In the beginning of Hamlet, the character Claudius is known as the man who took over
the role as king to Denmark after his brother, King Hamlet, had died. King Hamlet was also
Hamlet s father and soon after his death, Claudius was quick to marry his own sister in law,
Gertrude. When getting more into the play, the audience learns the truth behind King Hamlet s
death. Claudius had poisoned and murdered his own brother. Claudius was very manipulating.
For example, throughout act 4, most of Claudius s motives were to manipulate the people of
Denmark in order to get what he wanted for himself. In act 4 scene 3 he manipulates the people
of denmark in order to send Hamlet away because of his crimes. He wants them to believe that he
is sending Hamlet away for the better, but in reality he is trying to get what he wants and send
Hamlet away to get killed. In act 4 scene 5 his main motive at this point is to get rid of Hamlet no
matter the circumstances. Claudius teams up... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Differences Between Conventional And Organic Farming...
The Differences between Conventional and Organic Farming Practices
A controversial topic in the agriculture industry today falls within various types of farming
practices. As well as the procedures that are conducted on a daily basis in each type. For this
analytical report, I will focus on the differences between conventional and organic farming
practices. Both practices have multiple differences but face the same goal feeding people. By the
year of 2050, farmers are expected to feed around 9 billion people. The main debate in organic
farming falls with the ability to compete with conventional farming. Conventional farming also
poses a risk with competing with organic farming with the fact that some practices can be deemed
unsafe within conventional practices. However, this report is to take an outlook on both practices
to see not just the differences between the two, but how both can contribute to modern agriculture.
Though there may be some differences in the two, both strive for the same common goal.
The purpose of this analytical report is to illustrate the differences in the conventional and
organic farming procedures and how they both contribute in to agriculture in terms of
production. The report will focus on each of the practices and data enquiry for both on a global
level. For one, I will focus on what is contained in the soil in organic and conventional practices.
Next, we will focus on the in field application and costs involved in each. Lastly, I will convey

Different Types Of Identifiers In Scala
Variables in Scala are declared using the keywords val or var. The difference between the two
are that vals can not be changed, they are immutable the program will throw an exception if one
attempts to modify them, this is mainly useful for functional programming. For declaring
functions the def keyword is used followed by a list of parameters in parentheses and then a
colon, followed by the type, the function returns and then an equals sign followed by a block. For
example: def timesTwo( a: Int ): Int = { a * 2 } would declare a function that multiples the
parameter by two and retruns the result. There are a few different types of identifiers in Scala. The
first is the Alphanumeric Identifiers, these are used for most identifiers in... Show more content on

The constructor of a class is actually the body and the arguments that would normally be passed to
the constructor are listed as parameters of the class iteself. Auxiliary constructs can be defined
using the method name this however the first call in the function must be a call to another
constructor. Objects are similar to classes in Scala, however they don t take parameters and there
can only a single instance of an object. Scala also provides a subtype of standard classes called
case classes . The case keyword tells the compiler to automatically generate additional methods in
the class. These methods are: apply which allow you to ommit the new keyword when creating an
instance of the class, unapply which allow you to use the class for pattern matching, as well as
getters and setters for all parameters in the constructor. Case classes are particularly useful for
bundling multiple related variables into a single class to avoid having long argument lists in
functions and pattern matching.
Expressions
The main types of expressions in Scala are if conditions which are basic if statements that found
in nearly all languages, for comprehensions, and match expressions. For comprehensions are used
to construct a sequence of results by iterating over a collection or some condition. The syntax for
a for comprehension is for ( seq ) yield expression . A seq in a for comprehension is a generator in

Racism and the Workplace
Racism can be thought of as a superiority complex, in that some ethnicities are better or more
superior to others (Bhopal, 2004). This complex is used to construct and validate actions that will
build and maintain many constructs of discrimination and disproportion. Racial inequality and
discrimination is ingrained in racism, it is a direct echo suffered by the minority individuals in a
prejudiced society.
One key factor when exploring how stereotyped individuals that have been victims of
discrimination counter act to stressors such as ethnic slurs, supremacy and other acts of
environmental racism is whether or not they are affected contrarily. The Journal of Critical Public

In the same time, Wells Fargo recruited talented people into the companywithout any specific job,
because the CEO believed that these smart people could help company to face and deal with the

world when banking deregulation arrived. Moreover, Wells Fargo went three times higher than
general stock market which the banking fell 59 percent behind. CEO of Wells Fargo, Dick
Cooley a level 5 leader, understand three simple truths. First, if you begin with who, rather than
what, you can more easily adapt to a changing world. Second, if you have the right people on the
bus, there are no problem to motivate and manage people goes. Right people are self motivated by
the inner drive to produce the best results, and right people don t need to be tightly managed, they
know what they should or should not do. Third, if you have the wrong people on the bus, you won
t get to the place where you want to go, whatever how hard to motivate and manage them. Right
people are the most important asset in the company. Right people can turn a nearly bankruptcy
company to Fortune 500 company.
The third reason why good to great companies outperform, is they do not cover up the bad news
(confront the brutal facts). Nobody likes to hear the bad news, but we have to facing it and take

How I Taught My Friend Essay
My friend Ling asked me to help her with her English pronunciation at the beginning of this year.
I tutored her for two weeks and we did not have very official tutoring time; so mostly, we
communicated in English and I corrected her whenever I spotted a mistake. She is a Chinese girl
who comes from Chengdu, and she has problems producing some of the sounds. For example,
she always pronounces six as sex , which ultimately made her come to me since it kept
embarrassing her. I first taught her some basic pronouncing rules, and then we began the spotting
then correcting session. After reading Wiggins (2012) article about feedback, I think the way that
I taught my friend was to have her learn from the feedback. For example, one day when we were in
Mexico City, we were talking about how to make her pronunciation better.
She said, I don t know why I cannot prolounce (pronounce) certain sounds .
Then I corrected her, it s pronounce, not prolounce. It s an n not an L .
Then she tried, pro~l~oun~ce .
No, it s pro~n~oun~ce , I corrected her again.
Pronounce? Pronounce? , she looked at me with her eyes widely opened.
Yeah , I said.
But I cannot figure it out. What s the difference? she asked.

sounds different tongue positions in the mouth. Then she became better but there were still times
she mispronounced them. I told her to be careful with these sounds for the

Qualitative Analysis Autism
Children who have pragmatic language impairments often have difficulty with language
comprehension, telling stories and participating in conversations. This typically leads to further
problems fitting in with their peers, making friends and being successful within a classroom. There
has been a lot of research regarding effective treatments for improving social skills for students with
autism. One barrier to drawing conclusions about optimal treatments for children with autism is the
use of highly varied dependent measures in the treatment literature (Cunningham, 2012, p.1). The
study conducted by Cunningham focuses on reviewing previous studies on this topic and
addressing variables important in the development and the measures taken within those studies. The
studies used assessed social interaction skills in young children with autism through a focus on
various related literatures.

Nursing Self Regulation Essay
A profession can be defined as a prestigious occupation with a high degree of identification among
its member that requires a length and rigorous education in an intellectually demanding and
theoretically based course of study; that engages in rigorous self regulation and control; that holds
authority over clients; and that puts service to society above simple self interest (Schwirian, 1998,
p. 6). Nursing is just that, and with its specific body of knowledge, standards, and codes of ethics, it
is only fitting that it be self regulated (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2012). The College of Nurses
works with registered nurses, registered practical nurses, and nursepractioners to determine whether
or not standards and best practices are met and that the public s safety is protected.
Specific Knowledge
Self regulation is the idea of a professional group entering an agreement with the government to
regulate their activities of their members (Canadian Nurses Association, 2007). This allows the
government to have a small role in the control over the practice of the profession and the services
that the members provide, but they do not have to gain in depth expertise to regulate the profession
that would be needed if it were under direct regulation. Self regulation acknowledges that the
profession is able to regulate its members because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on The Concussion Problem in Professional and...
Thesis Statement
The number of concussions in professional and amateur football has been rising and has sparked
much controversy in recent years. These concussions are most likely linked with disease and even
the deaths of some pro and semi pro football players. New research is attempting to solve the
problem but the issue is still prevalent in football today.
Concussions
To understand the issue of concussions in the NFL we must first understand exactly what a
concussion is. A concussion is a minor traumatic brain injurythat jars or shakes the brain inside the
skull. Severe concussions can cause loss of consciousness and/or forgetfulness. However, you do
not need to lose consciousness to have a concussion. Minor concussions usually cause ... Show

The disease is caused by a build up of an abnormal protein, named tau, which strangles brain cells.
To this day, CTE has no known cure. However, it can be reversed, slowed down, or even stopped.
Though there is a link between concussions and CTE, science has not proven that concussions are
a direct cause of CTE. It has quickly risen as a concerning effect of repeat concussions in modern
day football.
Private Research Many private companies and researchers have taken the issue of concussions
head on. Research has drastically increased throughout the 21st century. In the words of Mark
Lovell PhD. founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine
Concussion Program, 90% of what we know about concussions we ve learned in the past five
years. These private researchers have taken different approaches to solving the issue but they are all
working to achieve one goal: the reduction of concussions and the prevention of their long term
effects.
For the first time ever, researchers at UCLA recently have found signs of CTE in living former
NFL players. Until now it was only possible to detect CTE after death. The researchers at UCLA
discovered a new method of testing for CTE in living people. They tested four retired players for
CTE; Joe DeLamielleure, Leonard Marshall, an unnamed player, and most notably, the Dallas
Cowboys Hall of Famer, Tony Dorsett. So far, the three named players have all

On My Way With Sesame Street My Abc s
Twenty five years, a quarter of a century! What changes have been made in children s books
throughout these years? The first book I chose was On My Way With Sesame Street: My ABC s
which was written in the year of 1989. Twenty five years later, the second book I chose is called
Disney Frozen: Forever Sisters, was written. Both of these books show the changes made in the
world throughout these past years.
Major changes in children s literature have been shown throughout these years. There was much
more value to the older book that I used compared to the newer book. The older book included
more of a story with vibrant colors. Also, the older book was more educational compared to the
newer book. The older book presented the alphabet in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Manifest functions are those recognized and intended consequences that people observe or expect
in a social pattern or social institution. In the first book, On My Way With Sesame Street:My ABC
s, the main manifest function was to teach children the alphabet. The multiple sets of the alphabet,
along with the different vocabulary, help to expand the vocabulary that the children develop. Along,
with sentences describing the words, there are pictures demonstrating them. The alphabet
demonstrated by Grover uses his own body and a few props to demonstrate the shapes of the
letters. There is even an alphabet of trash done by Oscar the Grouch. Another manifest function
would be that this book is a tool to teach children how to read. This book teaches children that
there is more than one way to look at the alphabet, and that it can be fun to learn. The latent
functions are those unrecognized consequences. When adults read this book to their children,
the children will have to listen to comprehend what they are being read. The children will also be
taught how to sit still to be able to see the book. Another latent function is that they will be
taught other activities throughout this book like colors, shapes, and spelling. In the second
book, Disney Frozen: Forever Sisters, a manifest function would be about how this book is a
fairytale because Elsa has the powers of snow and ice. Love and hate relationships between
siblings is shown throughout this book because Anna and Elsa fought and Elsa coronation, which
caused Elsa to set off her powers, and caused her to run away, but she was hunted. She was
almost killed until Anna saved her, and in the end everyone was happy. A manifest function, is
that this book teaches children about love, and how to be able to express love. A major latent
function is about body image. The girls in the book are very tiny which can cause girls to feel that
they should look like

The Unique Work of Roy DeCarava
Roy DeCarava was born in 1919 in New York and became a famous photographer whose subjects
focused mostly on urban African Americans and their daily lives. Harlem was where he took
most of his photographs. He originally started out painting and first began using a camera to
document images he would later use in his painting, but over time began to rely on the camera
more until that became his medium for art. Throughout his life, DeCavara was forced to deal with
racial discrimination, which in part led him to begin photographing African Americans and their
experiences in 20th century America. In the 1940 s DeCarava began shooting a series photographs
in Harlem, which later were included in his first solo show in 1950. In 1952, Decarava was
awarded Guggenheim Fellowship, and was the first African American photographer to receive this
grant. In 1955 he founded A Photographer s Gallery, which was implemented to gain public interest
in photography, and eventually closed due to poor sales. He also started a workshop in 1963
specifically for African American photographers. Though he was an acclaimed artist his career as
a freelance photographer was never completely stable so he looked for other jobs throughout his
life. He became a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, became an associate professor at
Hunter College and eventually became a full time and distinguished professor there. In 1996, the

Rhetorical Analysis Of General Macarthur s Speech Duty,...
Soldiers should live Duty, Honor, Country, but what does that entail? The speech given in 1962
to the young cadets at Westpoint was an influential piece still referred to today. In General
MacArthur s address Duty, Honor, Country Address at West Point, I will identify the rhetorical
devices, persuasive appeals, perspective, and tone used, as well as the impact those devices have
on the meaning of this speech. First, in this speech, there are no rhetorical questions given.
Although, General MacArthur s speech contains parallelism in ideas. For example, he includes
you stand as the Nation s war guardians, as its lifeguards from the raging tides of international
conflict, as its gladiators in the arena of battle, he shows that the cadets have many risks they
sacrifice for their country. All of the people he compares are protecting someone. Using
parallelism in ideas makes his speech impactful by being able to find a common theme
throughout and a sense to revisit while in the gloomy battlefields of war. The parallelism in
structure used in his address is We are reaching out for a new and boundless frontier. We speak in
strange terms: of harnessing the cosmic energy; of making winds and tides work for us; of
creating unheard synthetic materials to supplement or even replace our old standard basics; of
purifying sea water for our drink; of mining ocean floors for new fields of wealth and food; of
disease preventatives to expand life into the hundreds of years; of

Lyndon B Johnson s Speech To Overcome Summary
Lyndon B. Johnson s We Shall Overcome
During the 1960 s, America was divided over the voting rights of African
Americans, who had won their freedom from slavery a century before but had not yet gained the
right to vote. This was a time of racial discrimination, as well as a time of political unrest. In his
speech, We Shall Overcome, which was delivered to Congress on March 16, 1965, Johnson broke
many boundaries that had previously been set by his predecessors. His use of pathos, ethos and
logos attempted to persuade the Congress to pass a bill that would start to push for equality for
every citizen of the United States and alert the nation of the unethical segregation.
Johnson s goal of passing the Voting Rights Act through his speech We Shall Overcome was
especially effective due to his use use of pathos. Johnson s specific audience to which he is
speaking is members of Congress; however, he also speaks to the American public attempting to
connect and get their support. In his words to Congress, he is asking not only for the support of
Congress in passing this act but also for the support of the American public. When he mentions to
all in the Nation tonight , this shows that he also wants the support of all Americans. He hopes to
show that he is not just concerned about the legislative aspect of this civil rights issue but that he is
also concerned with the ethical and moral issues of the situation showing that this issue is about
more than just a law. Throughout

The Vaccine Of Autism Connection
The Vaccine to Autism Connection
It is amazing how much Americans trust doctors and more shocking, vaccines. Vaccines are
injections we receive from the moment we are born and throughout our lives that are meant to
keep our bodies from contracting various. A baby born in a hospital today can be given up to six
shots before the mother is even in a place where she can conciously tell the doctor whether she is
okay with that or not. It can take years to become aware of, but the early exposure to the unnatural
substances that make up vaccines can lead to a disorder called autism. While many
Americans view vaccines positively for their adequate ability to prevent illness, the rise of autism
in the nation and its link to vaccines is reason enough to try to change our tactics for trying to stay
healthy.
Autism is a developmental disorder with symptoms including defects in coordination and motor
skills, visual disturbances, and immune suppression. What researchers like Larry Trivieri
Jr. have realized over the last decade is these symptoms are extremely similar to the effects of
mercury poisoning. Mercury makes up 50% of Thimersal, a preservative found in vaccines; The
increases in the occurrence of autism are closely linked to the widespread use of
thimersalcontaining vaccines, says Trivieri. While the possible link between autism and vaccines is
clear, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claim there is no link but have yet to
thoroughly investigate the issue

Drug Abuse In Othello
William Shakespeare is responsible for coining the word addiction. Does this make him
responsible for everybody with an addiction? Shakespeare defined addiction as a devotion to a
habit. Here s an example of how Shakespeare utilized the term addiction in Othello, Act II, Scene II
It is Othello s pleasure, our noble and valiant general, that, upon certain tidings now arrived,
importing the mere perdition of the Turkish fleet, every man put himself into triumph; some to
dance, some to make bonfires, each man to what sport and revels his addictionleads him. Through

Just because a person has factors that contribute to drug abuse doesn t mean that the person is
doomed to abuse drugs. Many people who have these factors never choose to use drugs at all,
and some people who choose to do so dabble only once, and they stop when the first experience
is negative. Many people who have addictions, make a conscious choices to engage in their
destructive behavior to deal with stress. Stress is the body s way of dealing with a demand. It
involves the release of different chemicals in the body so that it is prepared to take action. Stress
activates the hypothalamo pituitary adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. This is
what sets forth the fight or flight reaction when there is a sense of danger. Self medication is a
situation where people turn to alcohol or drugs in an attempt to manage their problems in life.
Depressants like alcohol produce a calming effect on the body, and so the individual will feel
like they have escaped their difficulties. They may start to take these substances more and more
as a way to manage their stress levels. This is dangerous because the self medication can be far
more damaging than the initial stressor itself. Using alcohol or drugs to deal with stress is at best
a short term solution. Substance abuse only masks the problem and doesn t solve it. It will be
almost impossible for the individual to learn better ways of managing stress while

What Is The First Cause Argument
The first cause argument is based on cause and effect, it attests that the universe must have a cause,
and that this cause is God. The first cause argument is also known as the cosmological argument.
The universe could not have come into being without something that started it. Therefore, this
argument does show that God exists. This essay will analyse the first cause argument, provide proof
of why God is shown that he exists by the first cause argument and, explore the objections and
counter objections that people have when it comes to this argument.
The first cause argument shows the existence of God through the statement that the universe must
have a cause and as result, it is impossible for there to be an infinite cycle of causes so therefore,
God exists because he is the first cause. The strength of this argument is that it indicates the need
for something in order for there to be a beginning, but why conclude that this Something is God? I

We have the gift of existence, and our existence was attained from our causes. If things and
people came into existence using their own nature without it being passed down to them through
other people there would be no need for a first cause but, people do not exist from their own
nature which means that they have a cause which goes to show that there is Indeed a first cause
and that this cause must be God. The universe only has beings that do not exist on their own
essence, that are not eternal or necessary, all beings in the universe need a cause. Beings that are
not self explanatory, eternal or necessary are called dependent or contingent. Furthermore, a being
who is self explanatory is called a necessary being. Dependent beings need causes. If the
independent being does not exist, then all the other dependent beings that rely on it will not exist.

In the short story written by Alphonse Daudet, The Last Lesson starts off with a young boy with
the name of Franz in which he is contemplating wither he should do the right thing and go to
school, or skip school and go spend the day out in the woods with the birds and animals. Franz
frantically decided to go to school, even though he was already late. As Franz hustled to school,
he had no clue that it was going to be the last time he would be going to school before everything
changed. Franz, along with the people of the town were notified that it would be the last day
that the school that this town revolved and grew up around, would no longer be the same. As
the towns people realized that their school that they grew up in and the only school their kids

younger, came and sat in the last French class that would ever be held inside of the school. The
amount of respect the town had for the school and for the teacher, Mr. M. Hamel, showed how
much the small things that someone might not like at the moment, might later realize was the
biggest impact on their life s. When the French and Prussia War first began, The Prussians were

The cast is one of the finest and consists of Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer
Esposito, William Fichtner, Brendan Fraser, Terrence Howard, Chris Ludacris Bridges, Thandie

In general, actors act, and react. They act on their own, and they react to one another. After Don
Cheadle s monologue in the beginning of the film, it is clear that this film is going to be a deep
seated story. Films create movement out of images, time out of movement, and story from the
action. The writer/director Paul Haggis has a background in television, and television has multiple
stories all interweaving together. His knowledge from television helped in the editing process. In
Crash, Paul Haggis had several transitions in the story lines. He compressed some scenes because if
too long, the audience would lose interest in the other stories.
The cinematography in the movie adds a tremendous amount of experience to the film. The film
follows the lives of several characters that come from different walks of life. It is important for
the mood setting of the plot to use different techniques to help the viewer assume the role of
witness. This role is essential to the main idea of the film, which is a reflection of us and our
natural feelings that at times may be described as racist.

about their integrity? What does that tell voters about their intellect? Any government leader
caught in the act of stealing intellectual property should be a red flag to all voters because, most
likely, that candidate or politician doesn t have much intellectual property of their own to begin
with. And if it s not their own words and their own work, then who is it that s really running the

grandmother s death to nineteen seventy two and that she died fifty years ago (Alexie). Though
this results in the year according to Jackson being 2022 any discrepancy given could be the result
of Jackson s unreliability as a narrator. Knowing this we can understand the historical context
properly and know how to apply this understanding properly. The personal history of the Author,
Sherman Alexie is incredibly important to gaining deeper understanding of Jackson. Alexie
during university changed his major from medicine to American Studies after succumbing to
fainting spells in anatomy class and after graduating and beginning writing he had developed a
drinking problem by the age of twenty three, upon learning that The Business of Fancydancing
was to be published, he immediately gave up alcohol. ( Sherman Alexie ). During the beginning
of the story Jackson gives a brief biography of himself, describing himself moving to Seattle
twenty three years ago for college, flunked out after two semesters, worked various blue and bluer
collar jobs ... and then went crazy. (Alexie). This shows that Jackson acts as something of an author
avatar for Alexie, acting out a potential future where Alexie flunked out of secondary education and
his drinking problem remained. In addition both Alexie and Jackson are from Spokane and share
the same culture and

How To Survive The Sinking Of The RMS Titanic
I always wondered, what if I survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic? Well, one day, I built a
time machine in my basement. It took me a few years. Then, when I was 12, I jumped in.
Suddenly, I was in an old fashioned car heading for a building. I got out of the car, and then I saw
myself wearing a gown. I went inside the building that was in front of me, and I suddenly saw a
man and 3 others, playing poker to win a Titanic Ticket. Then, I was offered to play poker for the
same ticket. So I accepted the offer. As I played, I thought to myself, what if I win? What if I m
on my way to New York? Then I stopped thinking. It was time to reveal my cards. One man,
wearing ripped clothes, had 4 kings. The other man had 4 jacks. I had 4 aces! I won!

Of Mice And Men Friendship Comparison
Of Mice and Men Compare/Contrast Essay Friendship does not have the same definition to all
people. Some people look for their friends to always be there for them, but some people consider
someone a friend as long as they are there to listen to you. Therefore, friendship is interpreted by
each person. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeckand the poem Always There by Ryan
C. Wilks have similar messages about the way they see friendshipfriendship, but also have
different depictions of friendship at the same time. Both writings depict friendship in a way of
having someone by your side. In Of Mice and Men Lennie says, An I got you. We got each other,
that s what, that gives a hoot in hell about us. (Steinbeck, 104). This quote says that their
friendship is strong because they have each other to care about. In Wilks poem he says, Doesn t
matter what mood I m in, You re always there. (Wilks, line 5 6). Those quotes depict friendship in
a way of just being their for each other. Therefore, the messages in the... Show more content on

The following scene happened at the end of the book between Lennie and George by the river:
And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of
Lennie s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the
trigger. (Steinbeck, 106). George killed Lennie because he did not want to see Curley shoot him
in the gut and leave him to a slow and painful death. The mercy killing was an act of friendship
between George and Lennie. The poem has a different job for a friend. The poem states, You will
always be there for me (Wilks, line 26). According to Always There a friend has a job to always be
there for you by your side. That is a different view from Of Mice and Men where the friendship
has George doing what will keep Lennie from suffering even if it means losing Lennie

The Impact Of The Columbian Exposition
March 31st, of 1889 marked an important day in not only France s history, but America s history as
well. The Eiffel Tower was unveiled that day, during the Exposition Universelle in Paris, joining the
palace of machines, and other larger than life feats of the iron architecture [that] dominated the fair
(Expo1889 Paris). As a nation, America was embarrassed and determined to show their dominance
in the realm of iron and steel working. Thus, the idea for the Chicagos world fair was born, giving
the US a needed opportunity to out Eiffel Eiffel (Larson 15). Before long, it was decided that the
fair would be called The Columbian Exposition , honoring the 400th anniversary of Columbus s
sail across the Atlantic. During its six months of operation the fair was an unequivocal success and
had a powerful and lasting impact on the nation s psyche politically, socially, and economically
(Larson 373). Consequently, despite having certain economic implications, the 1893 Chicago World
s Fair, to a large extent, was an event that both influenced millions and acted as a transitional period
for America in several different manners.
Politically, the Columbian Exposition was an immense success. Just coming out of an industrial
revolution, the nation had several inventions and innovations, that were yet to be seen by other
leading countries, such as AC DC electricity, agricultural machines, and an impressive
transcontinental railroad system. Without a doubt, the Columbian Exposition

Reflection On Al s Student Support Assistant
The event took place whilst AL s student support assistant (SSA) was out at a meeting during a
morning session. As a TA, I was asked to look after AL during this time to monitor his behaviour
and to provide support.
It was during our morning mathematics session whilst the teacher was asking a question to the
group to see if they could come up with a way to solve them on the interactive whiteboard, when
this incident happened. AL was sat next to EM on the carpet and the teacher asked the pupils to
discuss with their talking partner what strategy they could use. AL and EM were both working and
talking sensibly together and there were no other problems. When the teacher requested feedback
from the group, EM quickly raised her hand to answer however ... Show more content on

I also asked to have more information about the behaviour management policy and strategy in
school in order to improve on my own practice. I felt I needed a bit of support to help me
understand my responsibility and role in school a bit more to be able to deal with situation like
these in the future. The DFE (2016) states that behaviour policies within school should be
understandable and clear for all members of staff to comprehend. I have now read and asked

Carolyn Forche s The Colonel
In the poem The Colonel, Carolyn Forche recounts a cruel encounter with the titles main character
of interest while working for Amnesty International in El Salvador. The colonel personality can
best be summed as a remorseless man in a chaotic country where violence is customary to the
colonel and his people. He also cares not for the civil liberties of the citizens of El Salvador that he
governs or the fact that he is revealing his evil personality to Forche with no compunction. The
theme for The Colonel could be that if people see that wrong is being done in their presence they
should try their best to give those a voice that don t have one.

the whole ordeal was like for the speaker. The colonel then says I am tired of fooling around he

Underground Railroad Thesis
Underground Railroad The Underground Railroad was not only a passage to freedom but also
to equality. As a slowly established organization in the early 1800s, it impacted the lives of
many people especially slaves (History.net). Many slaves found freedom through the secret
passages of the Underground Railroad with the raging fear of being caught. The Underground
Railroad is a secret passage to the North slowing leading slaves to freedom. This passage to
freedom was an opportunity that shall not be missed. As a matter of fact it was one of the best
historical events that occurred during the Civil War times. The commencement of the
Underground Railroad was very secretive yet successful. This organization was neither a railroad
or underground. It was a number of houses, barns, and hidden rooms where slaves could hide.
This whole project was based off of a strong belief of slavery being bad and injustice. After
everyone thinking that this railroad underground was real, people made code names. A conductor
would be code for people who helped transport the slaves. Harriet Tubman was one of the best...

most slaves traveled to north to Canada; the promised land and that was their final destination.
However the fugitive slave law act Bloodhound Law was established in 1850 (Kennon) This law
required every single runaway slave should return to their master. Furthermore slaves would not go
back because they knew of the consequences. The southerners also dreadfully wanted to know the
routes that their slaves took. In 1898 Wilbur H. Siebert published maps of the supposed routes of
the underground railroad (Kennon). By doing this he had some clear images that he could share to
other whites. Although this never stopped the expansion of the number of slaves rapidly running

to describe the settlement of places such as India, Australia, Algeria, Brazil... controlled by the
Europeans, Imperialism means when a foreign government governs a territory with no settlement,

form of governmentwas installed. To my understanding of this period, the government evolved to a
citizen friendly system by creating and practicing the Declaration of the Rights of Man. and Citizen

Summary
Zynga was the leader in the social game with the support of Facebook. The demographic
representation of the social games extends to women and elderly. The lack of creativity of Zynga
pushes the consumer away. This decline is also due to the fact Zynga had failed to change its
strategy toward the mobile platform. Zynga relies its sales on virtual goods, which are very limited
and difficult in the mobile environment. A lack of diversity to another social networkand its
subordination to Facebook was also an issue. Zynga s relationship with Facebook, which imposes
the use of Facebook credits on its application, causes the collapse of the organization. Moreover,
Zynga was object of competition from different players
The strategy of Zynga is offer free games in order to sell virtual goods by exploiting the marketing
possibilities of the games. In this perspective, Zynga uses Facebook as the social media platform to
access data from different users.
Question 1
Despite its dependence on Facebook, Zynga would be a good marketing platform. First, Zynga has
300 million active users. Thus, Zynga controls large and diverse geographic and ethnic users that
extend to women and elderly. The company has the ability to target and segment customers. For
this reason, Zynga relies on data analytics to increase and retain online gamers. In consequences,
marketers will profit the same data analytics to increase sales.
In contrast, players do not like ads, and advertisement will be an

The Definition of Liberty
In New York there is a 250 ton green statue dressed in a robe, holding a torch and tablet with
broken chains at the feet. In 1886, the statue was given to the United States as a gift to symbolize
liberty. The statue is the Statue of Liberty. She is dressed in a robe to symbolize the Roman
goddess of freedom, Libertas. She holds a torch and a tablet to symbolize evoking the law. Many
individuals visit the Statue of Liberty, hoping to understand what liberty means. Liberty has many
interpretations and it is not confined to one meaning. To truly understand the meaning of liberty, an
individual must understand the different types of liberties that are available to Americans. Visiting
the Statue of Liberty will not fully define the concept of what liberty truly means; an individual
must understand the definition, the characteristics, the types, and what liberty is not. First, an
individual needs to understand the definition of liberty. Liberty is derived from the Latin word
Liber, which means free. Liberty means an individual is able to to live in a society that is free of
oppressive restrictions on how to live ones life, behave, or ones political views. An individual
commonly expresses liberty as: freedom, independence, autonomy, emancipation, and liberation.
Next an individual must understand the characteristics of liberty. There are two characteristics of
liberty, negative liberties and positive liberties. Negative liberties are liberties that do not have

A Tour Pouhokio 21 January 2013 PouhokioWater has always been of importance to our people.
The Maori word for water is wai and it should be noted that wai Maori refers to the purest water
available. In ancient Waimarama there were many streams that would originate in the foothills and
join together in to three main streams that would empty out in to the sea. Starting from the
northern end we have the Totara and moving southward we have the Waingongoro and the stream
at the northern end is the Pouhokio. Today the Waingongoro no longer empties in to the sea but
has been diverted to join up with the Totara. The Pouhokio remains almost where it has always
been and it is this river that runs alongside the village settlement. It was the Pouhokio that caused
the most damage in the devastating floods of April 2011. Of ongoing concern to the Maori people
of Waimarama has been the deterioration and decline of these rivers due to pollution and over use
for irrigation. We have a long standing grievance with regard to the Waingongoro River and the
recent furore regarding the encroachment by private landowners on to the Public Pouhokio reserve
has bought the Pouhokio River back in to the limelight. At that time when so many people were
claiming rights it occurred to me that there was little attention

Gabriela Cowperthwaite Blackfish Controversy
Exaggeration and Manipulation Undermine Blackfish s Credibility Gabriela Cowperthwaite s
activist documentary, Blackfish, spurred a significant public dialogue following its 2013
premier. The film centers on the role of Tilikum, an orca whale at SeaWorld, in the deaths of
three SeaWorld trainers, including, most recently, Dawn Brancheau. Cowperthwaite follows a
suit brought against Sea World by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),
weaving together testimony of scientists, former trainers, and family members of the deceased,
among others, to make a compelling case against SeaWorld s practice of holding and performing
alongside orcas. Nevertheless, after its release, the film drew criticism from some of its
participants as well as Sea World itself. Cowperthwaite claims not to have tried to vilify
SeaWorld. However, this claim seems dubious given the film s fairly evident anti SeaWorld bias.
On its website, SeaWorld asserts that several key points made in Blackfish are untrue. One of the
film s primary claims is that orcas in the wild live significantly longer than those in captivity, which
bolsters the film s thesis that captivity harms orcas. Great controversy surrounds this... Show more

While Blackfish does not touch upon any of the good that SeaWorld does. Again, this does not
mean that the film is unreliable in and of itself. However, it again casts reasonable doubt over
the film s veracity, an issue that the director of a compelling film should strive to avoid. If
Cowperthwaite aimed simply to get people thinking, she would have given viewers a positive
perspective as well, so as to enable viewers to conduct their own robust cost benefit analyses of
SeaWorld s business

The house that was supposed to give the residents a view of the waterfall, hangs over it instead, making the waterfall a part of the structure within the house. It was designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wrightin 1935 as a private residence and weekend home for Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr. a department store owner from Pittsburgh, and his family. Built during one of America s darkest times for architecture, what is now known as America s Most Popular House, became a symbol of hope and was a turning point in Wright s career. If a person can do this they will not only be successful in their education but in their careers and life in general. If I am able to conquer that downfall I believe there is nothing that will be able to stop me in gaining my degree and moving onto a career that I will love to do. Another effect of being personally responsible is that it will lead to success in my career. The first thing that will contribute to this is that personally responsibility will have led to my success in school giving myself a foundation to succeed in my career of choice. Ethical Arguments For And Against Torture International conflict has evolved in recent decades from wars among nations to cat and mouse games of terrorism and counterterrorism between nations and non state factions. National defense requires the development of reliable intelligence to prevent horrific acts of violence. The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency s use of enhanced interrogation techniquesto extract information from suspected terrorists has led to considerable debate of the morality and usefulness of torture. The moral dilemma asks whether agents of a democratic government should disregard the nation s founding principles of liberty and the rule of law for the purpose of preventing a potential act of violenceagainst its citizens. This essay will explore the moral arguments for and against torture and the policy implications of those arguments. The moral defense of torture, however, ultimately rests on unrealistic scenarios and would require policies that, in themselves, pose ethical challenges. The United States can do better than resort to torture to protect itself. Torture is condemned by worldwide consensus through documents such as the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Mappes, Zembaty DeGrazia, 2012, p. 345). Torture involves detaining someone suspected of planning violent acts or who may know of such plans, thereby violating the individual s right to liberty (p. 384). It is also defined by extreme interrogation techniques that cause mental or physical pain, such as simulated drowning or Alan Dershowitz s example of poking sterile needles under fingernails to get information (p. 345). • 7. The Effects Of Stigma On Functioning On Bipolar Disorder... The Impact of Stigma on Functioning in Bipolar Disorder Patients Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a mood disorder that requires careful medication management during a patient s lifetime (Halter, 2014, p. 227). Bipolar disorder is described as recurrent episodes of mood changes ranging from maniato irritability to depression (Halter, 2014, p. 228). Periods of normal functioning are also recurrent with mood shifts. Often times bipolar disorder goes undiagnosed for many years which is linked to undesirable outcomes such as suicide (Halter, 2014, p. 227). On the other hand, many patients with a definite diagnosis report denying their illness because of the stigma that is associated with mood disorders (Thome, Dargel, Migliavacca, Potter, Jappur, Kapczinski, Cereser, 2011) . Perceived stigma is an attribute that devalues or discriminates against a human being because of their mental illness (Pedneault, 2014). Stigmatizing attitudes can negatively impact on the patients psychosocial functioning, behavior tendencies and cognitive function. Research Appraisal I chose to do an article relating to bipolar disorder patients, because I have come into contact with numerous patients with both Bipolar I and Bipolar II diagnoses in clinical this semester and I enjoy speaking with them and listening to their stories. I have witnessed them at both at high s and low s and I am intrigued to learn about different experiences and stigma that have affected their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Paul Simon contrasts this overall idea by demonstrating that people are sick of society and want to be isolated from humanity. The information presented by John Donne and Paul Simon are unique, but have very contrasting ideas as they pertain to humanity. The heart, given enough time, will become hard and incapable of any feeling. Simon uses an individual who is hurt, to showcase the retreat to safety. This is okay for a certain extent of time, but sadly, some stay inside. They hide in their fortress, like a turtle drawn into its armored shell. John Donne contrasts this idea using the line A part of the main, and implies everyone is together and how living in solitude is not living, but only existing. John Donne s poem demonstrates we all have a role within the world, and our contributions are never ignored, hence the last line, It tolls for thee, referencing funeral bells. The last line implies that the bell rings for you, the reader, and how you are acknowledged as a human being and as a member of society. In the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, the character Claudius is seen as an antagonist. An antagonist is always the negative character. Antagonists are known to always go against the protagonist, in this case it is Hamlet. In the beginning of Hamlet, the character Claudius is known as the man who took over the role as king to Denmark after his brother, King Hamlet, had died. King Hamlet was also Hamlet s father and soon after his death, Claudius was quick to marry his own sister in law, Gertrude. When getting more into the play, the audience learns the truth behind King Hamlet s death. Claudius had poisoned and murdered his own brother. Claudius was very manipulating. For example, throughout act 4, most of Claudius s motives were to manipulate the people of Denmark in order to get what he wanted for himself. The Differences between Conventional and Organic Farming Practices A controversial topic in the agriculture industry today falls within various types of farming practices. As well as the procedures that are conducted on a daily basis in each type. For this analytical report, I will focus on the differences between conventional and organic farming practices. Both practices have multiple differences but face the same goal feeding people. By the year of 2050, farmers are expected to feed around 9 billion people. The difference between the two are that vals can not be changed, they are immutable the program will throw an exception if one attempts to modify them, this is mainly useful for functional programming. For declaring functions the def keyword is used followed by a list of parameters in parentheses and then a colon, followed by the type, the function returns and then an equals sign followed by a block. For example: def timesTwo( a: Int ): Int = { a * 2 } would declare a function that multiples the parameter by two and retruns the result. There are a few different types of identifiers in Scala. The constructor of a class is actually the body and the arguments that would normally be passed to the constructor are listed as parameters of the class iteself. Auxiliary constructs can be defined using the method name this however the first call in the function must be a call to another constructor. Objects are similar to classes in Scala, however they don t take parameters and there can only a single instance of an object. Scala also provides a subtype of standard classes called case classes . The case keyword tells the compiler to automatically generate additional methods in the class. These methods are: apply which allow you to ommit the new keyword when creating an instance of the class, unapply which allow you to use the class for pattern matching, as well as getters and setters for all parameters in the constructor. Case classes are particularly useful for bundling multiple related variables into a single class to avoid having long argument lists in functions and pattern matching. • 17. How I Taught My Friend Essay My friend Ling asked me to help her with her English pronunciation at the beginning of this year. I tutored her for two weeks and we did not have very official tutoring time; so mostly, we communicated in English and I corrected her whenever I spotted a mistake. She is a Chinese girl who comes from Chengdu, and she has problems producing some of the sounds. For example, she always pronounces six as sex , which ultimately made her come to me since it kept embarrassing her. I first taught her some basic pronouncing rules, and then we began the spotting then correcting session. After reading Wiggins (2012) article about feedback, I think the way that I taught my friend was to have her learn from the feedback. For example, one day when we were in Mexico City, we were talking about how to make her pronunciation better. What s the difference? she asked. This typically leads to further problems fitting in with their peers, making friends and being successful within a classroom. There has been a lot of research regarding effective treatments for improving social skills for students with autism. One barrier to drawing conclusions about optimal treatments for children with autism is the use of highly varied dependent measures in the treatment literature (Cunningham, 2012, p.1). The study conducted by Cunningham focuses on reviewing previous studies on this topic and addressing variables important in the development and the measures taken within those studies. The studies used assessed social interaction skills in young children with autism through a focus on various related literatures. Nursing Self Regulation Essay A profession can be defined as a prestigious occupation with a high degree of identification among its member that requires a length and rigorous education in an intellectually demanding and theoretically based course of study; that engages in rigorous self regulation and control; that holds authority over clients; and that puts service to society above simple self interest (Schwirian, 1998, p. 6). Nursing is just that, and with its specific body of knowledge, standards, and codes of ethics, it is only fitting that it be self regulated (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2012). The College of Nurses works with registered nurses, registered practical nurses, and nursepractioners to determine whether or not standards and best practices are met and that the public s safety is protected. Specific Knowledge Self regulation is the idea of a professional group entering an agreement with the government to regulate their activities of their members (Canadian Nurses Association, 2007). This allows the government to have a small role in the control over the practice of the profession and the services that the members provide, but they do not have to gain in depth expertise to regulate the profession that would be needed if it were under direct regulation. In the first book, On My Way With Sesame Street:My ABC s, the main manifest function was to teach children the alphabet. The multiple sets of the alphabet, along with the different vocabulary, help to expand the vocabulary that the children develop. Along, with sentences describing the words, there are pictures demonstrating them. The alphabet demonstrated by Grover uses his own body and a few props to demonstrate the shapes of the letters. There is even an alphabet of trash done by Oscar the Grouch. Another manifest function would be that this book is a tool to teach children how to read. This book teaches children that there is more than one way to look at the alphabet, and that it can be fun to learn. The latent functions are those unrecognized consequences. When adults read this book to their children, the children will have to listen to comprehend what they are being read. The children will also be taught how to sit still to be able to see the book. Harlem was where he took most of his photographs. He originally started out painting and first began using a camera to document images he would later use in his painting, but over time began to rely on the camera more until that became his medium for art. Throughout his life, DeCavara was forced to deal with racial discrimination, which in part led him to begin photographing African Americans and their experiences in 20th century America. In the 1940 s DeCarava began shooting a series photographs in Harlem, which later were included in his first solo show in 1950. In 1952, Decarava was awarded Guggenheim Fellowship, and was the first African American photographer to receive this grant. In 1955 he founded A Photographer s Gallery, which was implemented to gain public interest in photography, and eventually closed due to poor sales. He also started a workshop in 1963 specifically for African American photographers. The speech given in 1962 to the young cadets at Westpoint was an influential piece still referred to today. In General MacArthur s address Duty, Honor, Country Address at West Point, I will identify the rhetorical devices, persuasive appeals, perspective, and tone used, as well as the impact those devices have on the meaning of this speech. First, in this speech, there are no rhetorical questions given. Although, General MacArthur s speech contains parallelism in ideas. For example, he includes you stand as the Nation s war guardians, as its lifeguards from the raging tides of international conflict, as its gladiators in the arena of battle, he shows that the cadets have many risks they sacrifice for their country. All of the people he compares are protecting someone. Using parallelism in ideas makes his speech impactful by being able to find a common theme throughout and a sense to revisit while in the gloomy battlefields of war. The parallelism in structure used in his address is We are reaching out for a new and boundless frontier. We speak in strange terms: of harnessing the cosmic energy; of making winds and tides work for us; of creating unheard synthetic materials to supplement or even replace our old standard basics; of purifying sea water for our drink; of mining ocean floors for new fields of wealth and food; of disease preventatives to expand life into the hundreds of years; of ... Johnson s We Shall Overcome During the 1960 s, America was divided over the voting rights of African Americans, who had won their freedom from slavery a century before but had not yet gained the right to vote. This was a time of racial discrimination, as well as a time of political unrest. In his speech, We Shall Overcome, which was delivered to Congress on March 16, 1965, Johnson broke many boundaries that had previously been set by his predecessors. His use of pathos, ethos and logos attempted to persuade the Congress to pass a bill that would start to push for equality for every citizen of the United States and alert the nation of the unethical segregation. Johnson s goal of passing the Voting Rights Act through his speech We Shall Overcome was especially effective due to his use use of pathos. Johnson s specific audience to which he is speaking is members of Congress; however, he also speaks to the American public attempting to connect and get their support. In his words to Congress, he is asking not only for the support of Congress in passing this act but also for the support of the American public. When he mentions to all in the Nation tonight , this shows that he also wants the support of all Americans. • 28. The Vaccine Of Autism Connection The Vaccine to Autism Connection It is amazing how much Americans trust doctors and more shocking, vaccines. Vaccines are injections we receive from the moment we are born and throughout our lives that are meant to keep our bodies from contracting various. A baby born in a hospital today can be given up to six shots before the mother is even in a place where she can conciously tell the doctor whether she is okay with that or not. It can take years to become aware of, but the early exposure to the unnatural substances that make up vaccines can lead to a disorder called autism. While many Americans view vaccines positively for their adequate ability to prevent illness, the rise of autism in the nation and its link to vaccines is reason enough to try to change our tactics for trying to stay healthy. Autism is a developmental disorder with symptoms including defects in coordination and motor skills, visual disturbances, and immune suppression. What researchers like Larry Trivieri Jr. have realized over the last decade is these symptoms are extremely similar to the effects of mercury poisoning. Mercury makes up 50% of Thimersal, a preservative found in vaccines; The increases in the occurrence of autism are closely linked to the widespread use of thimersalcontaining vaccines, says Trivieri. While the possible link between autism and vaccines is clear, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claim there is no link but have yet to thoroughly investigate the issue ... Gabriela Cowperthwaite Blackfish Controversy Exaggeration and Manipulation Undermine Blackfish s Credibility Gabriela Cowperthwaite s activist documentary, Blackfish, spurred a significant public dialogue following its 2013 premier. The film centers on the role of Tilikum, an orca whale at SeaWorld, in the deaths of three SeaWorld trainers, including, most recently, Dawn Brancheau. Cowperthwaite follows a suit brought against Sea World by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), weaving together testimony of scientists, former trainers, and family members of the deceased, among others, to make a compelling case against SeaWorld s practice of holding and performing alongside orcas. Nevertheless, after its release, the film drew criticism from some of its participants as well as Sea World itself. Cowperthwaite claims not to have tried to vilify SeaWorld. However, this claim seems dubious given the film s fairly evident anti SeaWorld bias. On its website, SeaWorld asserts that several key points made in Blackfish are untrue.
