Wayne State University Libraries and Detroit-area K-12 schools (primarily in underserved areas) collaborate on the Chapbook Project, a poetry and art initiative aimed at advancing student literacy and strengthening the University’s ties to the community. The project expanded this year to include schools in Mexicantown, a unique community in Southwestern Detroit with a student body comprised of English-speakers, bilingual students, and English Language Learners. It is the project’s goal to promote self-esteem by emphasizing the value of literacy and the power of positive self-expression.
