As with all students our international students experience particular challenges as they transition not just to a new educational institution but indeed to a new country, home, language and culture. Rohene is now going to share her perspectives on how we can best support these students.

Also Ipsos Reid 2010, Brainstorm 2009 Survey, University Affairs 2010 article, and SFU Fall 2010 Survey The SFU students who participated in the NCHA were 61% Female and 39% male, with an age range reflecting the general student population. They were undergraduate students in all years, and 16% were graduate students. Information was collected on a vast range of topics related to health, including relationship status, where the students get their health information, sleep, alcohol use, methods of birth control… but I’m just presenting a few selected findings here. Carolyn has the whole survey if anyone is interested in seeing more detailed information.

- NHA stats. I thought this one would be interesting to you because your presence here attests that you are all volunteers. Just anecdotally, volunteerism seems a more prevalent activity than when I was in university, but according to this survey, 2/3 of university students still don’t volunteer.

- This is really interesting to me because these academic impacts encompass most aspects of a student’s life – physical and mental health, family, relationships, sleep habits. This really highlights that academic difficulties are holistic and not simply a matter of poor writing style, time management problems and things like that. Thus the work of all the divisions of Peer Programs is interconnected and can have an impact on a student’s overall well being as well as academic success.
