2. SUBJECT AND THEMES
• The subject of the documentary was the rapper
Kendrick Lamar and how he made it in the music
industry through years of learning and struggling
• It had themes of determination, never giving up,
learning and striving to achieve goals that you’ve
set yourself to become a better person.

3. STRUCTURE/NARRATIVE
• It began with a chronological story of his life
narrated by him saying how he learnt from the best
and developed his skills and how he started being
himself more to get noticed more, then it went on
to say how seriously he took it and how he spent
years of effort to get known and how he struggled
in his life due to the place that he grew up and
ends with his success and how he aims to get better
and what he wants to achieve in his life.

4. MISE EN SCENE
• The camera is frequently in black and white setting
possibly showing the straight forward nature of his
personality and that he’s not a complicated person
but very basic and just like everybody else, the
lighting casts a shadow across his face to create a
sense of the unknown to his character to say that
he’s not fully shown himself yet, he’s frequently
shown with his prop a microphone to emphasise
what he’s speaking about and where he is now and
he’s always wearing very casual clothing to show
he’s just the same person he was before he was
famous.

5. CAMERA
• Has extreme close ups of his face from at the
beginning during the interview, it also zooms in from
a long shot to an extreme close up. Has lots of
dutch angle shots to maybe convey that he’s
complicated in the sense that he’s a had an odd
up-bringing and there’s plenty of things that are
mysterious about him. There’s a tilt from his shoes to
his face showing the simplicity of his clothing and
character.

6. EDITING AND SOUND
• There’s very fast editing between shots with images
fading into another to show how fast the time went
from older images to new.
• There’s non-diegetic sound of a cover of one of his
songs in a slow, emotional style by a woman, as well
as music played at the start on the piano to
introduce the documentary to introduce the
documentary as emotional and deep.

7. ARCHIVE MATERIAL AND STILLS
• There’s plenty of archive material showing things
such as him performing live and there’s still shots of
images of him as a child and places that he grew
up as well as images of people that inspired him to
strive to be better at what he does.
