INCREASING LABORATORY EFFICIENCY AND VALUE OF LABORATORY DATA BY MAXIMISING ...Keynetix
Managing laboratory test data can be time consuming and expensive, especially if inefficient systems are resulting in double or triple entry of data. The introduction and requirement to produce AGS data on the majority of construction projects in the UK, coupled with tough economic conditions have forced UK laboratories to increase their efficiency dramatically.
This paper and accompanying presentation will discuss the merits of AGS data, introduce the two golden rules for data entry and illustrate how AGS data and the golden rules can help laboratories increase their efficiency if implemented correctly. Finally, the benefits will be demonstrated using KeyLAB, the UK's leading geotechnical laboratory management package.

Checking in on Healthcare Data AnalyticsCybera Inc.
Data science and the use of big data in healthcare delivery could revolutionize the field by decreasing costs and vastly improving efficiency and outcomes. There is an abundance of healthcare data in Canada, but it is mostly siloed and difficult to access due to privacy and security challenges.
Advanced Laboratory Analytics — A Disruptive Solution for Health SystemsViewics
As US healthcare systems grapple with the recent upheavals in care payment and delivery, they are turning to advanced analytics as their “central nervous systems” for driving care and financial performance.
Laboratory information — spanning chemistry, pathology, microbiology and molecular testing, for example — is among the best sources of data for these advanced analytics, including clinician decision support, predictive analytics, population health management, and personalized medicine. When strategically harnessed and integrated to create a patient-centric lab data lake, laboratory information can form an affordable yet competitively powerful advanced analytics solution well suited for many health systems — i.e., a disruptive option.
L. Eleanor J. Herriman, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Informatics Officer of Viewics, explains why laboratory data should be a core strategic component for achieving success in value-based healthcare.
The Evolution of Laboratory Data Systems: Replacing Paper, Streamlining Proce...IDBS
The laboratory has become an increasingly electronic environment. It’s not just that the volume of data is greater than ever before, it’s also being generated at ever-increasing speeds. As companies move towards a fully integrated lab environment there are benefits and pitfalls along the way. Successful projects start with a solid foundation, and keep a clear vision in mind.
Clinical data analytics is an exciting new area of healthcare data analytics. This presentation presents a brief overview of the topic as an introduction and whetting the curiosity of the reader.
Big Data in Healthcare Made Simple: Where It Stands Today and Where It’s GoingHealth Catalyst
Health system leaders have questions about big data: When will I need it? How should I prepare? What’s the best way to use it? It’s important to separate the hype of big data from the reality. Where big data stands in healthcare today is a far cry from where it will be in the future. Right now, the best use cases are in academic- or research-focused healthcare institutions. Most healthcare organizations are still tackling issues with their transactional databases and learning how to use those databases effectively. But soon—once the issues of expertise and security have been addressed—big data will play a huge role in care management, predictive analytics, prescriptive analytics, and genomics for everyday patients. The transition to big data will be easier if health systems adopt a late-binding approach to the data now.
This paper introduces the concepts of Hypermedia and Hypertext systems as tools for managing information in the field of architecture and enhancing the landscape of education. An application developed by the author is used to illustrate the use of Hypertext programs in architectural education. Paradox, a powerful relational database program, is used to develop an application illustrating the works and philosophies of twentieth century masters of architecture. The paper recommends the development of similar applications to be available for students through computer networks, as tools for managing growing amounts of information and enhancing the landscape of learning.

Integration of an e-learning Platform and a Remote Laboratory for the Experim...Federico Lerro
Nowadays, it is more common to use both
systems, a Learning Management System (LMS) and a
remote laboratory, independently. However, we understand
it is highly convenient for the students to have access and
perform real experimental practices in remote laboratories
from a LMS. This integration of both educational resources
constitutes one objective of a project developed by a joint
venture company-university: a technology company (“educativa”)
and a public university (UNR). The project is
based on the addition to the “Virtual Campus LMS”,
developed by “e-ducativa”, of a function that allows the
access and control, via Internet, to the “Remote Laboratory
of Electronic Physics” located in the university
headquarters. Technology is basically a self-communication
protocol that allows exchanging data in a standardized way
between the LMS software and the device control connected
to the remote equipment. The project includes the
implementation of an interface that allows the users of the elearning
platform to have access to it and to future
developments of remote laboratories. In this paper the
authors describe the technical implementation of the project
and provide educational criteria in order to integrate the
new development into the electronic engineering
curriculum.
Present generation of learners, growing up in a digital age, expect a fully IT-infused curriculum as a minimum. So, the majority of non-digital-age maritime instructors have to strive hard to keep pace with these new-age students’ expectations. In this paper, we will share our experience at the Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI), where we are busy in developing and delivering a 3-year pre-sea training programme for marine engineers. Integrating technology in curriculum led to seamless accessibility, reduction of drudgery of calculations in engineering problems, increase in conceptual understandings. This also enables trials of various what-if scenarios and simulations of more authentic engineering cases, which were sometimes arranged as team assignments to add teamwork and cooperation in learning. Starting with the description of the steps taken to develop a knowledge-based infrastructure for learning, the paper will share some specific applications of technology usage in many of the course subjects and also include our student feed back, which reflects some degree of success of our efforts.
AN ADAPTIVE AND INTELLIGENT TUTOR BY EXPERT SYSTEMS FOR MOBILE DEVICESijmpict
Mobile Learning (M-Learning) is an emerging discipline in the area of education and educational technology. So researchers are trying to optimize and expanding its application in the field of education. The aim of this paper is to investigate the role of mobile devices and expert systems in disseminating and supporting the knowledge gained by intelligent tutors and to propose a system based on integration of intelligent M-Learning with expert systems. It acts as an intelligent tutor which can perform three processes - pre-test, learning concept and post-test - according to characteristic of the learner. The proposed system can improves the education efficiency highly as well as decreases costs. As a result, every time and everywhere (ETEW) simple and cheap learning would be provided via SMS, MMS and so on in this system. The global intention of M-Learning is to make learning “a way of being”.

Additional elements, like activity tracking asso-
ciated with an automated grading, facilitate the
tasks of professors in evaluating their students,
and establish different ways to use the laboratory
depending on their individual needs. Some pro-
fessors used the laboratory without grades, just
as a hands-on reinforcement for the theoretical
part. Others decided to incorporate it as exam-
ples during their class sessions. The majority chose
to include the laboratory as a 10% to 20% of the
final grade.
5. How 3D environments can change the engagement of university students
C
ommunication between AJAX formularies and 3D models is made through function calls im-
plemented in C# / Javascript within the Unity runtime environment. Events occurring in the
3D model can be tracked therefore into the Moodle database, and entries in the database or
from the web page can affect the way 3D models behave. This close integration can assist instructional
designers in making automated 3D learning contents that are not only compelling but seamless with
other systems used for performance tracking.
The infrastructure behind the platform was a cloud server configured in Amazon Elastic Compute
Cloud (AWS-EC2) on a Standard Medium Size Instance running the LAMP stack for Moodle. A total
of 1,500 students were enrolled in the Virtual Laboratory, and the operation was in terms of techni-
cal requirements uneventful, with an almost 100% uptime.
Production of contents (script development and 3D modeling) was synchronized with the timeline
of each practice, and took around a week of a 3 person development team for each of the practices.
Practices were launched into the live environment once a testing by the professors was made. Final
adjustments (text and some contents) took place 3 days before launching.
Further stages comprise a continuing operation of the Virtual Laboratory for coming semesters, at
a discounted cost needed to system maintenance, small upgrades and technical support for both
students and professors.
