Knowing Your Audience | NABSHOW 2015 Social Media Symposium Richard Harrington
This document summarizes key points about motivating audiences and conducting audience research from a presentation at NABShow15. The summary points are:
Audiences today are savvy, engaged content creators across multiple platforms rather than just passive consumers. Effective content must motivate audiences by fulfilling personal motivators like gaining skills or respect. Research is needed to understand audience segments and their triggers in order to create the right content for the right people and measure impact. Case studies can show how motivating content achieves outcomes like increased engagement, brand mentions, or sales conversions.
There are key things that will give you a much better chance at success. While these are well documented in numerous books, articles, and videos - there are still many stakeholders that don't subscribe to some basic truths, like: product decisions should be based on evidence, or having dedicated UX Designers on product teams.
Jeremy will go over his top ten questions to ask any team to see if they're heading toward launching a great product experience.

1. Design thinking is a human-centered approach that uses creative problem-solving techniques to meet human needs and inspire innovation. It involves empathizing with users, defining problems from their perspective, and brainstorming solutions before building prototypes and getting user feedback.
2. Examples show how design thinking has helped companies like Airbnb, PillPack, and Uber Eats improve their products and services by deeply understanding user needs through techniques like empathy mapping and prototyping. It has also been applied in healthcare, education, and other sectors to develop more effective solutions.
3. A lack of empathy during the design process, as seen in Google Glass, can lead to products that don't fulfill real user needs
1. Mobile devices have become the primary way people access media through smartphones, tablets, and other screens. Most media interactions are with mobile screens and smartphone ownership continues to rise rapidly.
2. Opportunities on mobile go beyond apps to considering how mobile usage has changed user behavior and discovering the paths users take to content across multiple devices. User research is key to understanding this.
3. Design for mobile must optimize for thumb and eyeball-only interactions, use touch targets large enough for fingers, and consider network limitations. Images should be optimized for recognition or description.
My Agile 2013 session 'Rapid Product Design in the Wild'. In August 2012 Red Gate attended Kscope, a conference for Oracle developers. Instead of doing the usual product demonstrations, we turned our stand into a live lab and took Agile development processes out of the office and in front of our customers. Our stand included an area for customer research, a Kanban board and information radiators in the form of a whiteboard, blank wall and a large digital screen. Over 3 days we ran 9 sprints and conducted 25 customer interviews, using a paper prototype to get feedback. We collected invaluable information about our customers' development environments, how they work with their teams, their processes, tasks and pain points. By the end of the conference my colleague had developed an interactive HTML/CSS prototype which potential customers could evaluate. The team went through several rapid build-measure-learn cycles to improve our product concept and validate the market need.
This presentation explains the process we used and introduces the Live Design Lab Planner, a tool which helps teams to plan this type of rapid product design activity.

Invited talk for the ACRL MD-MILEX Fall Program, Nov. 14, 2014. Presented by Bohyun Kim, Associate Director for Library Applications and Knowledge Systems, University of Maryland, Baltimore, Health Sciences & Human Services Library.
From DevOps to Operations Science discusses the transition from traditional IT operations to a DevOps model where development and operations teams work collaboratively. It outlines this transition in three acts: (1) how software became the interface for customer interactions; (2) how DevOps practices like continuous delivery helped businesses adapt by delivering better customer experiences faster; and (3) how successful companies build a culture of empowerment and accountability, treat failures as learning opportunities, and remove barriers to speed through technology and culture.

User-centered Design for Technical CommunicatorsWill Sansbury
This document discusses user-centered design and how technical communicators can contribute to the process. It defines user-centered design as an approach that grounds the design process in information about the intended users. The document then outlines the typical phases of user-centered design: analysis, design, evaluation, and deployment. It emphasizes researching users, creating personas, designing for personas, validating designs with users, and iterating based on user feedback. It argues technical communicators are well-suited to contribute user research, task analysis, early design reviews, managing on-screen text, and introducing usability testing. The overall message is that technical communicators should advocate for users to improve usability.
The three modern product trends discussed are:
1. Design as an investment - Companies that invest in design outperform those that don't. Design should be considered an investment, not just a cost.
2. Product decisions should be based on evidence from design research - Relying only on experience and assumptions is misguided; product decisions benefit from qualitative and quantitative user research data.
3. Empowering small teams - Large, centralized teams are less agile than small, cross-functional teams empowered to make decisions based on evidence from research.
