A LETTER FROM THE MAyOR
With the dawn of the New Year and in the heart of winter, Paris is delighted to
welcome you. We welcome you to the world capital of culture, arts and fashion.
in January we will be hosting Fashion Week and its sumptuous couture and
men’s fashion shows. Couturiers and designers from all over the world will
be gathered together to unveil their latest trends and to share with you their
inspirations. in Paris, every kind of style crosses paths, comes together, dialogues
with one another. in 2017, the boutiques and businesses of the capital will
continue to do them justice by offering you their most beautiful and up-to-date
fashion pieces, faithful to the inimitable Parisian elegance.
it is also an important year that begins for Paris who is a candidate to organise
the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games in 2024. Effectively in september
of 2017, the host city will be designated. This year, more than ever, our city will
transmit the universal values of Olympism.
We are very happy to welcome you and to have you discover a city that is
constantly rewriting itself.
i wish you an unforgettable visit and a wonderful year in 2017.

The Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) is hosting Not Afraid of
Love, an exhibition bringing together Italian artist Maurizio
Cattelan’s most iconic pieces, including La Nona Ora (The
Ninth Hour), which depicts Pope John Paul II being hit by a
meteorite. The exhibition is the largest to be put together
of the artist’s satirical sculptures in Europe and is a must-see
for fans of his at times humorous works.

Interview
WheredoyoulovetoshopinParis?
i basically don’t. When i come to Paris, it’s barely
for a week. i need to fly back to Tokyo as soon
as i’m done with the collection to work on the
next one!
Ifyoucouldwakeuptomorrowinanypart
oftheworld,wherewoulditbe?
Hopefully in my own bed.
What is the one item you never travel
without?
My Borsalino hat and my passport.
Whatisthefirstthingyoudowhenyou
arriveatyournewdestination?
i go out of the airport and look for the first
smoking area.
Whatareyoursuitcasepackingtips?
it’s just a pain every time. i actually would like
to hear some. i travel exclusively for work most
of the time, i do not have time to focus on
packing, i focus on the show. The rhythm of the
show is intense and doesn’t leave me room for
travel pleasures.
Whatshouldeverywomanandmanhavein
hisorherwardrobe?
Patience and tolerance.
Ifyouwerenotdesigningwhatwouldyou
bedoing?
Nothing good, i guess. i might have become a
criminal or something. after i graduated from
law school, i went back to my mother’s to help
her out with her tailor shop. But that was just an
excuse, i wasn’t ready to hit the road yet, and i
guess i would have never been ready actually.
My goal was to gain some time and stay out of
the system.
Isitdifficulttomaintainsuchalevelof
normalcyinthefashionindustry?
a very consumptive fashion is overrunning
the markets, while the designers’ fashion
gradually declines. i especially think about
the young generation of designers in today’s
fashion world. it must be so tough for them to
make it worthy as a business while also trying
not to lose sight of their true aim. Fast fashion
has altered the definition of craftsmanship in
fashion. it feels that it has become my role to
preserve the “hand-made quality”. it creates
emotion and imagination. We need to take
back the quality of the clothing along with its
creation. sadly, fashion shows are more and
more about showcasing the accessory range
of a collection. i always tell the young designers
“don’t look at computers. if you like something,
somewhere, you have to prepare yourself to
travel and backpack. You will look, smell and
touch. Then you can understand why it is so
important.”
Isitdifficulttobeclosefriendswithother
designers?Isthecompetitivespiritdifficult
toignore?
i have a few fellow designer friends but i don’t
feel like i’m competing with them. We have
more compassion for one another, being in this
relentless business.
Whichdesignersdoyouadmireandwhich
designersinfluenceyou?
When i first came to Paris, back in the 70s, the
Haute Couture was still dominating the fashion
scene. That was my starting point. Christian Dior,
Pierre Cardin were real icons to me. That’s also
when Yves saint Laurent went to launch his
first Prêt-à-Porter collection, Yves saint Laurent
rive gauche. i am not really influenced nor
affected by any other designers but i tend to be
sometimes admiring of the work of a stylist.
Today,designersrelyheavilyondressing
celebrities.Howmuchdocelebritiesplaya
roleinthesuccessofabrand’snotoriety?
Yes, i guess it brings a lot of attention. But to
do so, you need to approach them with lots of
goodies. You need to pamper your celebrities
by sending them presents. Fortunately, my
company is very bad at that.
Isthereanyoneyouwouldliketodressbut
haven’t?
Bob Dylan!
What’snextforyouasadesigner?
i now feel like sharing my experience with the
younger creators. Lately, i’ve been collaborating
with young artists from various fields and that
kind of creative conversation means a lot to me.
i also have young designers in my team now. i
want them to raise questions, to doubt more of
the way things [are done]. Don’t pay too much
attention to trends, they need to be able to
deny themselves so as to move on.
But that’s precisely where they fall into that
typical trap, because i believe that you will
only be able to oppose something, or find
something of your own, only after you have
travelled the long road of tradition.

Telling Time
with Louboutin
The king of the red sole, Christian Louboutin, has taken his
talents of adorning feet with beautiful shoes to designing
watches with Jaeger-LeCoultre to adorn wrists with equally
beautiful accessories. Combining colour and cut-out detailing,
the shoe designer has given his own unique flair to Jaeger-
LeCoultre’s iconic reverso timepiece. Designing unique straps
for the reverso Classic Duetto watch, Louboutin chose to
highlight the beauty of the watch’s emblematic face with straps
that at once complement the watch and also recall his own
shoe designs. a transparent strap highlights the mirror-style
back dial version that gives a thinly-veiled nod to his shoes that
feature transparent detailing, while the mother-of-pearl version
comes with a strap that features a graphic design, hinting at
imprints of Louboutin shoes.

Roitfeld, de La Fressange
and Uniqlo
Two fashion-loving ladies, two styles and a whole lot of attitude
can be found at Uniqlo. The Japanese high-street brand has
teamed up with not just one but two iconic French women to
bring fashionistas two collections that scream, “i love fashion,
the Parisian way”. The Carine roitfeld collection features high-
fashion inspired pieces, aptly referencing the famous editor’s
own style with a faux-fur leopard-print coat, tweed jackets and
pencil skirts making up the collection. Meanwhile, the inès
de La Fressange collection leans more towards the effortless
chic style of the Parisian model with twinsets, jeans and even
ponchos featured in the collection.

indications through graded smoky tints synchronised with the 24-hour disc.
and finally a translucent lacquered velvet-finished outer ring serves to indicate
the hours and minutes. This ideal travel companion has a 43.5mm diameter

46. Meeting with the Masters
it is rare to walk through rooms full of the masters but here they
are, just about all of them, and among them Monet, Degas, Picasso,
renoir, Matisse, Gauguin, rousseau, Van Gogh, and Pissarro. some 130
great masterpieces of impressionist, Post-impressionist and Modern
art have been gathered together at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in
a landmark exhibition entitled icons of Modern art. The shchukin
Collection. The show, which is part of the official programme for the
France-russia year of cultural tourism 2016-2017, pays tribute to one of
the all time great patrons of the arts of the early 20th century, sergei
shchukin, the visionary russian collector of French modern art. The
collection was broken up in 1948 and had remained little known to
the western public until this show, which benefited from exceptional
loans from the Hermitage Museum and the Pushkin Museum.

Decor DescenDs Into
the heart of townBy Patricia Valicenti
o
ver 100 prestigious international houses of
decoration from in and out of town are in
full bloom for the seventh consecutive Paris
Déco Off. This rendezvous of international
interior designers and editors is a tasteful tale in which
Parisian showrooms showcase myriad collections to both
professional decorators and the general public. Held this
year from January 19th to January 23rd, the free event
offers a unique opportunity to explore the aesthetic
universe of decoration in one of its cradles, Paris. Creators
of fabrics, light fixtures, carpets, trimmings and more,
enable you to enter into their refined world while offering
a glimpse into their know-how and craft.
This year exhibitors have been asked to put Paris in a
window to express their personal idea of, and particular
love, for the French capital. Meanwhile, monumental
lamps set up in partnership with the Masters of Linen will
illuminate the right Bank and the Left Bank around the
various venues and a festive, fun-filled evening is slated for
the 21st when the show will go on until 11pm.
a host of houses are in town for the event among them
the British house of sanderson, which has been creating
fabrics, wallpapers, paints and accessories inspired by
nature for over 150 years and whose designs burst with
the bucolic. Meanwhile, the Zurich-based 4spaces creates
original and tactile fabrics with this year’s collection
including hand painted wall coverings and lush natural
fabrics like cashmere and Egyptian cotton. The charming
world of Parisian-based, and family-run, Edmond Petit
unfolds during the event as well as the editor of high-end
decoration and furnishing fabrics showcases a festive
farandole of elegant offerings. The house, now run by the
sixth generation, has been producing fabrics in noble and
natural materials since 1872.
The French house of Camengo is presenting a host of
colourful and ethereal fabrics. The brand, founded in 2004,
is highlighting spherical and aerial shapes fashioned in soft
fabrics with muted colours. Meanwhile, the Parisian house
of Pierre Frey is bringing out a colourful ethnic ensemble
in its Maoming Collection evoking the talent and know-
how of the Miao women of the mountains of China. The
fabrics provide an opportunity to discover a unique textile
art based on indigo and the multi-colour effect offered by
embroidery.
Free renault shuttles will transport visitors over the
banks of the seine to discover the venues.
From January 19th through to January 23rd
9.30am-7.30pm and until 11pm on the 21st
