The emblematic liqueur of Chartreuse,
which turned 250 years old last year, is still
made by the Carthusian monks of the Grande
Chartreuse near Grenoble. Back in 1764, Brother
Antoine put the final touch on his exceptional
composition of 130 plants from around the
world. Chartreuse is also made with a secret
formula and today only Dom Benoit and
Brother Jean-Jacques, brothers at the Grande
Chartreuse, know the name of the 130 plants
that enter into green Chartreuse. And one day,
they too will transmit their precious know-
how, which includes selecting the plants, the
grinding process and maceration, down to the
next generation.
The great house of high jewellery Van
Cleef & Arpels is paying tribute to nature in
movement and Japanese culture with its
stunning Carpe Koï bracelet watch. The house,
a Living Heritage Company, revealed this
exceptional piece in January in Geneva during
the SIHH, the international show devoted to
high watch making. The piece is in the shape
of a carp, the orange-coloured fish that is a
symbol of love and enlivens Zen gardens with
its bright colours. The enchanting fish is also
a symbol of strength and courage for it swims
against the current. The intricate bracelet was
crafted by the hand of man in the house’s
workshops in France. Set with 8000 coloured
stones, the unique piece with yellow and white
gold required 3450 hours of intricate work.
It is outfitted with an extraordinary variety of
gemstones: the body of the fish is adorned
with yellow sapphires and spessartite garnets
set on yellow gold and there are, too, Paraiba-
like tourmalines and white diamonds.
When looking for perfection in a putter, you
might want to turn to the refined and timeless
lines of a ValGrine luxury putter made in the
Lyon manufacturing region of France. Founded
by Grégory Moreau who designs the putters,
ValGrine wears the Living Heritage Company
label and brings together craftsmanship,
refined design and the latest technology into
its putter. It all starts out with a blacksmith who
shapes the curve while the leather purveyor
proposes unique skins for that special grip,
followed by the engraver who imparts a
personal imprint on the club and the jeweller
who sets the stones. The house, working with
master craftsmen, offers three standards of the
hand-crafted, aerodynamic putters: limited,
numbered editions brought out in nine to 18
pieces, unique pieces that can be customised
from ValGrine’s range of finishes, colours, grooves
and engravings, and the exceptional totally
custom-made pieces involving precious materials
and the art of goldsmithing. The putters are
outfitted with a carbon hosel, the socket in the
head of a golf club in which the shaft is inserted,
giving the putter increased accuracy.
Paris was once buzzing with Solex motorised
bikes and they are bound to be back with their
own boutique inside the BHV Marais department
store. Solex, today owned by Easybike, has
repatriated part of its production to France and
the boutique carries the models manufactured
in Saint-Lô in Normandy. The electric-powered
Solex by Mobiky model enjoys a revolutionary
design and can be neatly folded in three seconds
to take on board metros, buses, or vehicles. It all
began back in 1905 when two French engineers,
Maurice Goudard and Marcel Mennesson,
joined forces and created a company, calling
it, for euphonic reasons, Solex. And in 1946
production of a revolutionary object, a bicycle
with an engine began and the rest is history for
with its low selling price and very low petroleum
consumption, the moped bike was a hit. The
e-Solex, the first electrically powered Solex, was
launched in 2005.

Message in a...
Serge Thoraval worked for world-famous fashion
houses in the 90s, which included Claude
Montana and Thierry Mugler, before launching his
eponymous jewellery brand in 1994. His designs
were at once contemporary and classic and
all featured words of love, poetry and at times
proverbs. His jewellery collection featured rings,
bracelets and necklaces that worked well on both
ladies and gentlemen. After his death in 1999, his
wife Geneviève opened the Atelier Serge Thoraval
where along with the artisans she released a
re-edition of her husband’s Classique line of
jewellery and continued designing in the same
poetic style as her late husband’s. Today, their
son Rock is at the helm of the jewellery house
where in the Parisian atelier he continues to create
unique pieces in line with what his father had
created, including these silver rings with one of
the five senses delicately engraved on one of
each in French.

Chic Vintage
Many visitors to the French capital love shopping and
returning home with something special, making luxury
vintage shopping one of the most popular activities
when visiting Paris. In a hidden passageway between the
luxurious Rue Royale and Rue Boissy d’Anglas is where La
Golconde is elegantly situated and it is here you will find
the largest collection of vintage jewellery created by French
jewellery designer Suzanne Belperron. One of the most
influential jewellery designers of the 20th century, Belperron’s
clientele included royalty, aristocrats as well as actors and
fashion designers, who she created unique pieces for upon
appointment. Her avant-garde designs and statement pieces
fascinated and intrigued Olivier Baroin, a French jewellery
expert, who acquired Belperron’s complete archives and has
dedicated his boutique, La Golconde to the late jewellery
designer, where clients are invited to come and discover her
unique creations, which include this yellow gold and diamond
Yin and Yang engagement ring.

Time of the
Tourbillon
The tourbillon, with its complexity and
mechanical refinements is regarded as one of
the greatest challenges of the watchmaker’s
art. The Swiss manufacturer, Carl F. Bucherer,
has brought out this complication for the first
time in a watch from its Manero range. An
opening in the dial at 6 o’clock provides a view
of this fascinating, highly aesthetic mechanism,
and the watch is outfitted with a number of
special features: from the centre the date is
indicated by a hand and the 24-hour indication
is found at 12 o’clock. The Manero Tourbillon
Limited Edition enjoys a robust 70-hour power
reserve and its remaining energy can be
viewed through the power reserve indication
at 9 o’clock. In its case of fine rose gold the
elegant watch has wedge-shaped hour
markers and the striking letters and numerals
typical of Carl F. Bucherer. The Manero
tourbillon has been brought out in a limited
edition of only 188 timepieces. The concept of
the tourbillon was first developed at the end of
the 18th century and designed to compensate
for the errors in the accuracy of a mechanical
watch caused by the effects of gravity. - P.V.

Delightful
Drawings
Whimsical horses, the cliffs of Wales as
interpreted by Alfred Sisley and a festive
café can be admired in fine drawings on
display in the capital this month. For over
two decades, collectors, curators of major
museums and art lovers have converged
on Paris for the internationally-renowned
Salon du Dessin, the drawing show, a
place to discover and purchase unknown
masterpieces and works by the masters
as well as emerging artists. The show is
regarded as the most important event
in the world for viewing and acquiring
old works and it is also the venue for the
much-anticipated 2015 Contemporary
Drawing Prize of the Daniel and Florence
Guerlain Contemporary Art Foundation,
which will be presented on March 26th.
Museums and foundations from Paris to
Sceaux are also getting into the drawing
spirit, exhibiting some of their rarely
shown works, for drawings are fragile and
often conserved away from the public
eye. For a selection of venues visit
www.salondudessin.com.
