Rocinha is a favela located in Rio de Janeiro between the neighborhoods of Gávea and São Conrado, overlooking Rio de Janeiro about 1 km from the beach. It developed after World War 2 with the arrival of European immigrants and became a supplier of vegetables for Rio de Janeiro in the 1930s. More immigrants arrived in the 1950s from other parts of Brazil. There are very few jobs available in Rocinha despite it being an opportunity for employment, and one of the main challenges is the lack of work for many residents. The World Cup had mixed effects for Rocinha with some job creation but also lost workdays and less business activity during the event.
