Rochina is one of the largest favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, home to around 100,000 people. It suffers from overcrowding, lack of sanitation, and open sewage drains which spread disease. Jobs are scarce in Rochina due to the large population, and poverty is widespread as most residents are unemployed. Preparations for the World Cup increased gang violence and reduced police presence in the favela.

Rio de Janeiro is a city located on Brazil\'s south-east coast. It is one of Brazil\'s largest
settlements with a population of approximately 11.7 million people. The population of Rio de
Janeiro has grown for a number of reasons. Natural Increase is one reason for its growth (this is
when the birth rate is higher than the death rate). The population has also grown as the result of
urbanisation. The has been caused by rural to urban migration. Millions of people have migrated
from Brazil\'s rural areas to Rio de Janeiro. 65% of urban growth is a result of migration. This is
caused by a variety of push and pull factors.
The rapid growth of Rio de Janeiro\'s population has led to a severe shortage of housing.
Millions of people have been forced to construct their own homes from scrap materials such as
wood, corrugated iron and metals. These areas of temporary accommodation are known as
favelas in Brazil. The conditions associated with favelas are very poor. Often families have to
share one tap, there is no sewerage provision, disease is common and many people are
unemployed.
Favelas are located on the edge of most major Brazilian cities. They are located here for a
number of reasons. Firstly, this is the only available land to build on within the city limits.
Secondly, industry is located on the edge of the cities. Many people need jobs therefore they
locate close to factories. Some of these settlements may be 40 or 50 km from the city centre (on
the edge of the city), along main roads and up very steep hillsides.
Causes of urban growth;
Although the process of urbanisation happens in both MEDCs(more economically developed
countries)and LEDCs,(less economically developed countries) the fastest-growing cities in the
world are in LEDCs.
The reasons for the growth of urban areas include:
There are many problems associated with the rapid growth. These include unplanned housing
(squatter settlements/shanty towns), dealing with urban waste, pollution and stress on the
infrastructure and the city\'s services.
Shanty towns/sqatter settlements;
The fact that cities in LEDCs are growing rapidly means that conditions can be poor. There are
often great inequalities within LEDC urban areas and they are even more pronounced in LEDCs.
Some of the worst conditions are found in the shanty towns on the edge of the city, near the
CBD(convention on biological diversity) or along main transport routes. They tend to be
unplanned and are often illegal. Houses are self-built using basic materials and shanty towns
have few services.
Shanty town residents face many problems on a daily basis.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Where is Rochina?
Rochina is in Brazil, it is one of the largest
favela in Rio Di Janeiro. About 100,000
people live there.
About 6% of Brazil's population live in
favelas or shanty-towns - around 11.25
million people across the country.

2. What is the history of the settlement?
• Overcrowding is a major problem in Rio's
favelas. On average, the population density is
about 37,000 people per square kilometre.
Because of the lack of toilets and poor
sanitation, sewage often runs in open drains.
This causes diseases which spread rapidly.
pv4/revision/11
3. What are the opportunities of living in
Rochina?
• There are few jobs in Rochina as it is a poor
favela. Some jobs are: tour guides showing
people around the favela, also barbers and
local shop workers.
• Most people don’t have jobs, this means they
do not get paid so that’s why they are really
poor.

4. What are the challenges of living
there?
• Jobs are rare here in Rochina as there are 100,000
people who live there so there is a competition for
jobs.
• The drains in the favelas are open and kids walk
through it, this makes it unhygienic. The residents
who live there get ill very easily because of this.

5. What is the effect, if any, did the world
cup have on Rochina?
• There where gang fights before the
preparations for the world cup, leading people
to die. This ment extra police had to guard the
stadium and other crimes where more likely
to get out of hand as there was less police.
