Rocinha is a large favela or slum located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It developed from a shanty town and now has buildings up to four stories tall, though basic utilities. The population is estimated to be between 150,000 to 300,000 people who have migrated from rural areas of Brazil. Housing is often cramped and made from scrap materials, though most now have electricity, plumbing and sanitation. Disease and unemployment are common issues due to overcrowding and location on cliffs.
