When an employee turns competitor
1. WHEN AN EMPLOYEE TURNS
COMPETITOR
Looking at how it cuts close to the bone when an ex-staffer becomes a
business rival

On June 3, corporate czar Adi Godrej criticised his former employee and ex-Godrej Consumer
Products MD Arumugham Mahendran for ethical and legal breach for planning to launch products
that will compete with Godrej's household insecticide. The common saying goes, `It's just business.'
But when an employee leaves a company and becomes a competitor, things sometimes turn sour:
Lee Iacocca and Ford In 1978, Henry Ford II
In 1978, Henry Ford II fired Lee Iacocca, telling him, “Sometimes you just don't like someone.“ It
ended the tension between the two, built up over years because Ford couldn't take Iacocca's brash
(but successful) style. Iacocca took his unorthodox methods to Chrysler soon after when he became
president of the bankrupt car company. In 1984, he was responsible for Chrysler's record profits of
$2.4 billion. One of its hugely successful projects was the `Mini Max' one that Iacocca brought from
Ford.
Steve Jobs and Apple
In his 2005 Stanford commencement address, Steve Jobs said, “We had just released our finest
creation -the Macintosh -a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired.“

But in an interview last year, the then Apple CEO John Sculley revealed that Jobs
was never fired. Instead, he was taken off his pet project the Mac (reportedly
because of his harsh working style that drove people too hard) and then, a power
struggle between the two erupted. Once Jobs left Apple in 1985, he created NeXT.
“He was sued by the board for hiring Apple engineers,“ Sculley said in 2015. Jobs
had the last laugh -in 1996 Apple Computer acquired NeXT and he returned to the
company he founded.
Marco Pierre White and Gordon Ramsay
Two temperamental chefs, plenty of heat in the kitchen. Marco Pierre White gave
Gordon Ramsay his first break, but the two have been feuding for nearly 15 years.
White alludes to the fact that Ramsay isn't loyal, while the latter once hinted that
White was a better chef than restaurateur. In January, White had this to say about
Ramsay's autobiography Humble Pie, “My book was picked up by (director) Ridley
Scott and by Hollywood and (his) wasn't. His book got discounted, mine (White
Heat) never did.“

Chris Wethrell and Google
When Google Reader was killed in 2013, its creator Chris Wethrell
mourned. In fact, he went on to say that he wished he could have
developed the idea on his own, instead of leaving it at the mercy of
Google's leadership.Google Reader was created in 2005, when Eric
Schmidt was its CEO and the feed aggregator immediately took off.
Wethrell left and formed Avocado, a social media platform that lets
loved ones stay connected, in the space of what Google explores. In
response to Google shutting down Reader, Wethrell said that he lost his
innocence about the business world long ago.
