Living Free is a nonprofit animal sanctuary that rescues dogs and cats from shelters and provides a refuge for animals that cannot be adopted. It also operates an equine therapy program called War Horse Creek that helps veterans transition to civilian life. Volunteers are important to Living Free's operations, donating over 6,000 hours per year, and the sanctuary relies on donations for funding.

2. Living Free is a nonprofit animal sanctuary whose
primary mission is to rescue dogs and cats whose
time is up at public shelters. We are also home to
War Horse Creek, an immersive transition training
program using rescued wild mustangs to assist
veterans as they adjust to civilian life.
We believe in creating a refuge for those in need of
a second chance. Living Free is a home for all, a
place where you can hear animals playing, people
laughing and hearts healing.
What We Do

4. Living Free's animal rescue license only permits
animals being transferred from a public shelter
or rescue partner. We do not take animals from
the public.
Once at Living Free, our rescues go through:
• a full medical exam and receive treatment,
• they are spayed and neutered if necessary,
• provided a safe, cage-free environment so
that they may be rehabilitated, socialized
and prepared for adoption.
If one of our rescued animals cannot find a
loving home, they are free to live out their lives
here at the sanctuary.

6. War Horse Creek at Living Free Animal
Sanctuary is a comprehensive reintegration
program using equine-assisted therapy to help
veterans transition from the military to the
civilian world.
Our immersive program is unlike any other. It
will provide life skills training, education and
career guidance with a focus on post-
traumatic growth.

We are currently closed to the public,
however, we will be giving private scheduled
tours in the near future.
We are actively adopting our rescues to
loving homes through private appointments.

10. We are a privately funded 501c3, no-kill animal
sanctuary which was established in 1980.
We rely on private donations from individuals,
foundations and local businesses, plus events help
raise the funds to support operations of the
Sanctuary including care, feeding, and medical
assistance to sanctuary animals and our veterans'
program, War Horse Creek.

Living Free is governed by a board of directors and managed by an executive director
and experienced staff that works as a team. Departments include: Kennel, Cattery,
Maintenance and Groundskeeping, Equine and Administration.

Our volunteers donate on average 6,000 to 8,000 hours a year. This correlates to over
6 to 7 full-time employees each week.

16. Along with the staff, volunteers represent the goals
and the mission of Living Free. Volunteers are
ambassadors of the sanctuary. Although some
positions require experience working with animals, all
positions require good people skills, being able to
work as a team player, understanding and
commitment to the betterment and care of animals
and the communities we support.

department supervisor of the area that you will be
assigned to be a volunteer.

18. 4. Watch an online volunteer orientation class.
5. If we have a current volunteer need that fits your
skills, you come to the sanctuary to train with the
department. Each volunteer must complete the training
and sign the completed training form along with a staff
member.
6. Coordinate a volunteer work schedule with the
department. We request volunteers schedule 3 times or
more a month.
