MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course, which allows for interactive online learning worldwide. In 2008, Stephen Downes and George Siemens developed the first MOOC platform, enabling global learners, educators, and the public to connect and learn from one another, founding the concept of connectivism. Their platform allowed for interactive learning compared to passive learning from older distance education methods like television and radio. Some key advantages of MOOCs include sharing knowledge globally, accessing information from around the world, and learning flexibly from home. However, low completion rates and lack of accreditation are disadvantages.
