History is the study of mankind's past through examining what happened, when, where, why and how. There are different ways to measure and understand history, including linear history of a nation growing and expanding over time, cyclical history where nations rise and fall in cycles, and imperial history focused on empires. Dating systems for historical events include B.C./B.C.E. for years before Christ and A.D./C.E. for years after, with no year zero between 1 B.C.E. and 1 C.E.
