What have you learned from
your target audience feedback?
Throughout the whole process of creating the teaser trailer and
ancillary tasks the audience research has been a great help. At the
start of the process we had to create a target audience questionnaire
which was for the purpose of asking a series of questions to find out
how our target audience watch films, where they watched them, and
who they watched them with. The target audience feedback from the
questionnaire was very helpful because it helped us decide on the
genre for our film. Our target audience said either comedy or thriller,
and as a group we didn’t want to do comedy so the genre was then
clearly chosen for us. We also found out that most of our target
audience said that teaser trailers were really helpful.
Before creating the teaser trailer we had to pitch our own film pitch
to a focus group. We pitched our film idea to our peers and
received both positive and negative feedback. The feedback from
our film pitch was useful because it allowed other people to pick
elements out that needed working on that we couldn’t see as a
group. For example a peer’s comment said ‘Our narrative was very
confusing’. We then as a group looked over our film narrative and
changed certain aspects that were not relevant to the narrative so it
became less confusing to the viewer.
Before we started filming we created a storyboard so when we were
filming we knew what order each scene would be. On the
storyboard we included images of what the scene would look like
and we also included a brief overview of what could be happening
in the scene and any other useful information such as framing,
angles and sounds. We then presented our storyboard to our peers
so they could give us guidance and critique about what we should
change to make it better. In this case we only received positive
comments so this meant we didn’t need to make any changes to it.
We then began to film and start producing the first draft of our
rough cut. Once the first draft of our teaser trailer was complete, a
focus group watched it. Feedback helped to improve our second
draft. For the first draft we generally received positive feedback
however there was one negative element which was that we should
make our scenes brighter. When we created the second version we
made sure that this problem was corrected straight away before
adding any more. With the second draft we again received mostly
positive comments with only one negative which was that we should
make the logo clip shorter. For the third draft we produced a focus
group questionnaire, for the purpose of finding out the overall
comments about our teaser trailer. From the audience feedback on
our teaser trailer we found out that the plot was easy to understand,
it made the viewers want to watch more, the genre was clear, the
trailer followed the typical conventions and it was made to a high
quality. Generally, the favourite features were the camera angles we
included and the logo was easily recognisable. We established as a
group that from this feedback our teaser trailer was a success. The
audience feedback at each stage allowed us to make changes along
the way to ensure the teaser trailer was meeting the expectations of
the target audience.
Throughout the whole process I have constantly been receiving
audience feedback which has been a great help. The audience
feedback has allowed us to make changes along the way on each
draft of our teaser trailer and both ancillary tasks. With receiving
audience feedback it has allowed us to produce a successful teaser
trailer and successful ancillary tasks, which our target audience like
and approve of.
