What are the traditional ways of dividing up the world?
1. First, second, third and fourth world Europeans = first world Areas they colonised = second world Poorer countries = third world Poorest of the poor = fourth world No place for communist countries?
2. North / South This used ECONOMY (GNP per capita) to compare wealthier and industrialised nations against poorer and more agricultural ones. A line called the North-South divide was drawn up. Just too simple…
3. Countries at different stages of development Not accepted because development is not only economic – poor countries have a rich culture and society LDC – less developed country MDC – more developed country SO…. These changed to: LEDC / MEDC New category has been introduced because some LEDC’s are growing rapidly, e.g. China / India = Newly Industrialising Countries (N.I.C)
4. The five fold division of wealth Look at map – these are based on WEALTH
Task: Do Activities 1 and 2 on Page 253.
Quality of life or standard of living?
Standard of Living This is a measure of economic well-being.   Standard of living can easily be measured by adding up the monetary value of our possessions and our jobs.  We can express measurements of standard of living in dollars or pounds and we can rate our standard of living by using statistics like average income, average number of vehicles, money spent of entertainment, etc.   All factors that affect standard of living can be measured with a price tag and can be bought and sold.
Quality of Life This is more difficult to measure than standard of living since it includes economic, social, physical, political, and spiritual well-being.   How we rate our quality of life may be different for each individual since many of the factors deal with personal beliefs or ideologies. While quality of life and standard of living are not the same, they are somewhat related.   Standard of living is one of the factors one would include when evaluating quality of life; however, it is not true to say that quality of life always increases when standard of living rises.  We can tell many stories of unhappy billionaires to make the case that quality of life includes many more factors than standard of living. Quality of Life is measures using the PHYSICAL QUALITY OF LIFE INDEX (PQLI).
