2. INTRODUCTION
• Transportation of livestock is an integral part of any livestock enterprise
• Transportation is a critical component of modern cattle production and marketing (Schwartzkopf-
genswein and Grandin, 2015)
• These animals need to be moved for a number of reasons including marketing, slaughter, re-
stocking, from drought areas to better grazing and change of ownership (Sejian et al., 2012)
• At times, when loading, the animals are tied on the four legs and the necks are deliberately turned
aside in order to create more space for more animals (Babayemi and Bamikole, 2010)
• Although, Good transportation is central to the calmness, control, admiration and general welfare
of livestock (Akinyemi et al., 2003), the effect of offloading activities on the welfare of livestock is
yet to be investigated
3. JUSTIFICATION
Cattle is the most preferred source of protein for Nigerians. Transporting cattle between
locations is not secure, as it is the most stressful event that can occur (Filani et al., 2005). Beef
is estimated to supply about 45 percent of the total meat consumed in Nigeria, while the next
in rank is sheep and goat meat with 35 percent. Hence, the need to improve existing
conditions
